| Construction Workshop, Holodeck 2 || lt. Sven Aune |_____ Interactions at a glance: Sven Aune -> KovaSven Aune -> Judy and Max_____ The reception was a complete mess after Sven had gotten pretty darn sick off that cigar. But the Sioasian doctor had whipped up some sort of herbal remedy right there on the spot and he felt much better. But he had to take a trip to sick bay just to make sure. A few hours there and a cleansed palette later he was released. He met Xander in the station gym and they worked out together, and Sven invited him to the workshop, but Xander had expressed that he had enough fun with station personnel and their families and would rather just kick back and watch the game. So Sven gave him a kiss on the cheek and made his way to the stifling hot environment of the holodeck jungle. He was eternally thankful that he didn't have to wear his uniform. He hated that hot tight itchy thing. So he wore what he normally wore while off duty. A stringer tank-top, blue jeans and a pair of dusty worn unlaced leather boots. He had to wage a bit of an internal war deciding which one he wanted to attend. Hunting, or building. Both suited him well as a combat engineer. But if he was honest with himself, he missed the building aspect of his job since the end of the Dominion war. Upon entering the holodeck he spied Judy and Max and gave them a wave as he approached. "Hi."And he also saw, to his surprise, the Andorian hacker. He tilted his head with a nod and greeted her as well. "Hey Kova. How are you?"_____ Tags Judith Eastman Isaiah Quinn [NPC - Kova Sh'qaleq - Holodeck 2, Front Ear Station] It didn't take long for a few others to arrive. The first to arrive with whom Kova had some familiarity was the station's executive officer, Commander Eastman. She hadn't met the man personally, but the accompanying her was her husband. "Good morning," she said in response to Eastman's greeting. She honestly never understood why they chose to wish people a good morning. There was still a significant portion of the day to consider. Who wanted their day to start well and then end badly? Kova also caught wind of Eastman's comment about them all about to melt a little bit. Kova's eyes narrowed only slightly, suspecting that it was designed to be a quip at her expense, particularly since her homeworld was an ice planet. "I assume you speak for yourself," Kova replied. "Andorian physiology allows us to endure a wide range of temperatures. I personally wouldn't worry about melting until around 80 degrees... centigrade." There was a hint of arrogance at the end of her comment. Sven arrived shortly after that offering his greetings. Kova had to admit she was perplexed, almost certain that he would have preferred the hunting scenario to the construction one. "I'm well," she replied. "Why are you here? Why aren't you off... shooting things?" She had to wonder if he had decided to come here to keep an eye on her. It was then that SilverTail spoke to those that had gathered, outlining what they were supposed to be doing. He made an effort to dismiss the myth that they were devoid of technology. Kova had suspected as much all along. Besides, the Federation would have had nothing to do with them if they hadn't met the requirements for First Contact. She continued to listen, but slowly found herself becoming even more disappointed as it seemed their first exercise would be one completely devoid of technology and full of manual labor. The temptation to excuse herself was even greater at this point, though that would possibly mean granting those that believed this to be a struggle for her a measure of satisfaction. It wasn't something was inclined to surrender so easily. The first task was to erect a shelter. Kova moved forward and took a hatchet into her hands. She inspected the tool, and began to step away allowing others to collect their own. "What quantity is required? she asked, desiring a few more parameters for this project.

Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Holodeck 2]Judy's quip, it seems, was met with a certain superior attitude. Most of the Federation's leading species, including Andorians and Humans, did so love to signal their superiority, in their different ways. "Of course, Ms. sh'qaleq," she acknowledged, letting the whole thing slide, and then turned her attention respectfully to the dignitaries presenting. This was a trial run, and as much as Judy doubted that they would adopt the Sivaoan approach on its entirety, she believed there could be much merit to their methods. The construction aspect would be particularly valuable, considering the Tritters had appeared to react to energy signatures, which would certainly be a deterrent against using transporters, or even cranes, for construction. "This'll be like gardening back home," she whispered to Max, sounding enthusiastic. "Just without the dogs," he whispered back. Then, an idea hit Judy. "You go ahead without me. I need to ask them something," she said. He accepted this with a little kiss on her cheek. Judy then approached the Sivaoans. "As you know, our memory isn't as good as yours, so would it be all right if I make some drawings of the structure?" she asked. "I am an engineer by training."As a veteran engineer who'd done a lot of work repairing and retrofitting various structures and systems (as opposed to building anew), Judy had developed a long-standing hatred for sloppy, inadequate, and/or inaccurate as-built drawings. She liked to be thorough and orderly, even with slightly shaky hands. Max, meanwhile, took two hatchets, gripping both with both his hands. He approached Sven. "This is for you," he told the larger, younger man, offering the man a choice of the tools.
Tag Sven Aune , Ozu Saya , and Isaiah Quinn [ SilverTail and Two Dawns - Holodeck 2] Two Dawns finally moved, following Kova in retrieving a hatchet and starting toward the jungle surrounding them. In a dull monotone, she answered the Andorian's question, About a dozen. But with trees this size, we'll be looking for saplings about twice the height SilverTail said. She glanced briefly over her shoulder at her fellow Sivaoan. Oh, yes. My apologies. Please listen to what the actual architect says and not the biologist. SilverTail's tail coiled tighter. Two Dawns shook herself suddenly, her fur fluffing out before settling back down, and the Sivaoan's shoulders seemed somehow more relaxed. Come this way, she indicated. We'll just gather enough for one structure since we have a small group. We'll bring the saplings back to the clearing and strip them here so that we can use the branches as needed. We can also gather some of the vines to use for lashings..SilverTail turned back to Judy to respond to the woman's question, Yes, please feel free to make a record in any way you see fit. I'm rather surprised you'd rather draw than use one of your recording devices. He moved toward the pile of tools and retrieved a hatchet for himself.

Hard work in the heat of the day. He wasn't at all suprised at Kova's quip, and he chose to take it in stride. "Oh, I shot stuff this morning. I'm all funned out with shooting things day in and day out. I'm sure you understand." he fingered-gunned the funned part. He was worried about Max and Judy. They were both older, and he was concerned that this weather would have more of a negative impact upon them. It was true, but he wouldn't admit it to anyone, but they were like parents to him. The fact that his mother had abandoned him with an abusive father meant that he didn't have much of a parenting role model growing up, and Judy was the first person to really notice him and take him into a more healthy family life style. "Hey, Max." he clasped a hand on the older man's shoulder. "Good to see you." Sven said as he took an axe. "This is going to be interesting. Going on a forging hunt to find bamboo." he leaned in "Glad Judy is here to manage us all and get us onto task." he nudged him. He was acknowledging her ability to delegate and delegate well. To Sven, this wasn't a theoretical exercise to see how well this type of fabrication fits with Federation technology. But rather something fun to do. Something different. Something to learn. "Your humor also needs work," she said flatly. She could recall when he first engaged her and offered her a job. At that point she had advised him to work on his social skills. Apparently, he still needed some work in that area by her estimation. Kova's attention was drawn to the Sivaoan with whom she was not familir. The one that called herself Two Dawns. She was the one that answered Kova's question, as it turned out she was the architect. Her glance to SilverTail seemed to be a prompt to affirm her directives. "Thank you," The Andorian replied with a slight nod. She began to fall into step with the others, still not pleased with the concept of manual labor. She honestly wondered if Starfleet would adopt these practices as they tried to settle Kerelia. If it was worth this much trouble, perhaps the Federation should reconsider. SilverTail mentioned that they were free to record these proceedings as needed, due to their memories were not as good as the Sivaoans. Kova had to agree, a recording device would have been a great deal more efficient than the drawing. Of course, Kova realized that there could potentially be another reason. "I believe this is a practice of the commander's original trade as an Engineer," Kova volunteered. "For those without her skill, we are able to use the holodeck to recreate the events leading up to our final product. His tail corkscrewed when the man efficiently chopped down a small sapling and he said kindly, We should be able to use that, but for the primary structure, we do need saplings that are closer to sixteen feet.
Two Dawns, he called suddenly. There are some good vines here. I'll get them. SilverTail pointed overhead into one of the tall trees where several branches were draped with long green vines. Two Dawns turned to lift a hand in acknowledgement before continuing toward a couple of saplings that were the appropriate height. The Sivaoan put his hatchet between his teeth and set claws into the trunk of the tree, shimmying up the trunk quick as could be. It only took him a few minutes to chop down several lengths of the vines and loop them around his body to return to the forest floor. As he started after the others, there was a rustling sound above as a length of vine suddenly dropped to dangle low over the party. [NPC - Kova Sh'qaleq - Holodeck Two, Front Ear Station] Sven admitted with a smile that improving his attempts at humor would be a waste of time. The Andorian watched as he moved towards Max and Judy and began to wonder if his parting comments were another attempt at humor. Her antennae curled slightly and uncurled as she pondered the thought. It wasn't much longer before the Sivaoan known as Two Dawns took point and began to lead them into the holographic jungle. As they moved forward, Kova moved towards the rear. It seemed that Two Dawns wasn't as social as her counterpart SilverTail. Even during her first announcement, she ceded the dialogue to him. Kova also noticed a great deal of comradery between Sven and the Eastman-Williams couple. It certainly seemed more familiar than typical officer and subordinate. She supposed she could have done a little digging into their files, but such a notion would likely not be smiled upon. There was always the more direct approach of simply asking she supposed. Perhaps she could attempt it some time on Monday when she attempted to engage in the sort of small talk humans tended to appreciate. SilverTail announced that he was going to collect some vines that were hanging above. He made relatively quick work of scaling the tree to secure those vines. Kova also heard the call of Timber as Sven chopped down one of the smaller trees with relative ease. Deciding to make herself a bit more useful, Kova approached a sapling that appeared to be about five meters in height. "There has to be a more accurate means of selection," she said feelings as if the selections they made were rather subjective. Nevertheless, she took several swings at that particular sapling. It certainly took a bit more effort than it seemed Sven was used to. And finally, gravity managed to pull the sapling down to the ground. Moving along the base, she chopped away the banches. And as she neared its tips, she noticed some sort of eight-limbed crawler with large pincers and a bulb-pointed tail scurry from the branch she had been holding. Yet, it wasn't until she felt something brush the back of her neck that the Andorian screamed. "Aaahh!! It's some sort of grelth! Get it off!" She had been too busy swatting at the back of her neck to notice that it was the vine that had drooped to hit her neck. Kova's eyes were busy searching the floor and her arms, as she still rubbed at the back of her neck. Suffice it to say, she was giving her immediate surroundings a thorough inspection with her eyes, ears and antennae for the location of the 'creature' that had assaulted her. "Where is it? Where did it go?" she asked, occasionally looking up to see if there was any sign of the grelth that perhaps had wings she hadn't missed. Logically, she knew she wasn't in any danger. It was the holodeck and safety protocols were in place. Still... she had felt something on her neck. The mere thought sent chills down her spine and to her antennae.

[ SilverTail and Two Dawns - Holodeck 2] Two Dawns finally moved, following Kova in retrieving a hatchet and starting toward the jungle surrounding them.

Unless asked to do so, Kova had no intention of reliving this experience and as of now had no desire to visit Kerelia.

Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Holodeck 2]"It's not the same, but you take what you can get," Max answered on the topic of gardening. "You can't be a Starfleet spouse if you're picky."Max, of course, was happy with where life had gone for him, including the spaceborne stints the family had done. He was also happy with the one who brought him out here, as she held half of a homemade granola bar to his lips so he could have some without putting down the axe. As Sven, and then Kova, tried their luck, Judy started to think. From the way the XO's eyes seemed to focus on nothing in particular, and her hands and lips both stayed put, Max could all but hear the gears turning in her head. That was disturbed by the drama concerning the... insect? Spider? It had to be something small, considering a rodent would've been a little easier to see. "If you can't feel it now, it's probably gone, or as good as gone," Judy offered reassuringly. "We'll try to have a proper bug repellent when we actually go down to Kerelia."Then, she got back to what had occupied her thoughts. "Why don't we try an assembly-line system?" she suggested. "I figure if you two want to keep cutting them down, Max and I can trim the branches off. Or we can divide the labor the other way."It was probably not the best idea ever for the over-60 couple to chop down trees, but Judy didn't feel right issuing outright orders to account for her (and her husband's) age. Already approving of the idea, Max approached Sven's harvest and began to cut off branches.

Once it sprung free he broke off the second branch. [Holodeck 1 - Ensign Hudson]Hudson listened carefully as the Sivaoans explained the exercise and handed out some simple knives. She found the idea that using knives and spears were somehow more humane than a phaser to be...well odd, a phaser was much more likely to kill its target quicker and without pain while knives and spears could take longer and more easily leave an animal (or person) wounded and in pain. Nevertheless, she knew better than to voice her opinion. After spending a moment scouring for a suitable stick, Hudson eventually found one that was decently long and straight, figuring longer would be better since it would keep her further away from the target. She moved back over towards the Sivaoans and started attempting to sharpen it with the knife provided. It took a while, and the stick ended up shorter than she expected by the time she was done but eventually she was satisfied. "Is this good?" she asked, accidentally carelessly waving the large stick around as she tried to show the instructors.

[Shavan Th’zhaar, Holodeck 1] Shavan listened as Sundancer explained more about carving the end of the spear, and showed them a finished one. He set to work trying to carve his own. It was harder than it looked, but after a few experimental cuts he started to get the hang of it. About halfway through he paused. Had the forest always been making that noise? He tilted his antennae toward the rustling sound. But of course there was something moving out there; they were supposed to be hunting animals. Staying aware of the sound, he went back to finishing the spear. It must be one of the… “What exactly are we going to hunt?” Shavan looked around for a glimpse of the creature but didn’t see anything through the dense plants. The choice of these weapons might make more sense when they saw what they were trying to kill with them. Having finished crafting the spear to look similar enough to the one the Sivaoans had brought, he waited for the next instructions. [Holodeck 1 Hunting workshop- Fells] Fells greeted everyone present with a nod and a smile. There were two very attractive girls and a guy working on a spear. Spear making....hunting. How did he end up here and why? Was this fate? It surely felt like a throw back. The vegetation and humidity along with primitive hunting tools seemed like Fells had just time travelled back two years to a planet, where he spent over a year alone. Fending for himself. Trying to survive. It wasn't a pleasant memory. Instantly he wanted to turn around and leave but Fells wasn't a guy who backed out that easily. So he went to the nearest bush and looked for a branch, that was as straight as possible and a good diameter so it wouldn't break on impact. He found two, so he offered the girls one as well. "There's a second good branch. Would you like it?" He tugged hard on his, tore and kicked at it to break it off because of a lack of a saw. Once it sprung free he broke off the second branch. That is, until CopperTail was nearly (but not quite) hit by the waving spear of Ensign Hudson. "You must be careful," CopperTail warned. "These weapons are more dangerous than they look."To the greenish-bluish one, Sundancer turned to explain. "We will be hunting animals that are similar to your animals like boar and targs," he explained, drawing on memory. "But first, we must continue our preparation."He tapped his tail against a tree somewhat forcefully, to get the camp's attention. "For those of you who feel confident with your hands, I can teach you how to make a stone tip for your spears. For others, CopperTail will explain our ethics, and while you work, we will also discuss techniques," he announced. As no one had checked it out, the rustling gently continued. The Sivaoans assumed it a minor nuisance, possibly the holographic wind, as they didn't pick up any particular scents.

[Holodeck 1 - Fells Halgerdur]
Fells brushed a strand of hair behind his ear after handing one of the girls, who introduced herself as Rio Sosa, his second stick. When she asked him whether he was security as well, he almost said yes. In his mind, he still was. He had really liked that job and done it well...at least according to his standards. But then he had to deny her. Most likely she had seen his mugshot on her screen and now confused him with another officer. "Not anymore." He shook his head with a small frown, that was quickly replaced by a friendlier expression. "Fells...nice to meet you, Rio."He noticed that her attention was briefly somewhere in the forest and also the antennas of the guy nearby perked up and made him turn his head. While the Sivaoans explained about stone spear tips, Fells also scanned the dense leaves nearby for the rustling sound, that seemed to get closer. He took a few steps towards the bush, armed with his half done spear and parted the greenery with it. He wasn't worried about getting attacked since this was only a holo. On a real planet, he would have been a little more careful. It took him a moment to spot the creatures in the bushes but when he did he instinctively flinched back. "Oh shÜt..." Fells had very close to a few colorless creatures, that looked at him from multiple eyes and showed remarkably large teeth for their small body size. "I found something to spear!" He stated a little horrified as he held his spear to protect himself for now but never took his eyes of them.

With both in tow he went back to the basket and picked out a knife, tested the sharpness of the blade with his thumb and the offered the second branch to whoever wanted it before he started carving the end into a spear. [Holodeck 1 Hunting workshop]Make a point... Well, Rio could do that...she thought! But it was pretty quickly evident that her pencil was going to be a stub by the time she was done sharpening it, and she realized that the stick was really too short, so she glanced at the guy who had offered a new branch. "I'll take it, thanks!" She grinned. Maybe she'd get it right this time. "Hey, aren't you with Security?" While she didn't recall seeing him in person, she'd looked through the files, just so she'd be a little familiar with her crew mates, and she thought she recognized him from that. Still, she couldn't put a name to it. "I'm Rio Sosa, Security, newly minted PO3. This should be fun..."At the sound of rustling in the bushes, she glanced at Fells, then to their hosts. Were they supposed to wait or take the initiative? But then, they were here to learn Sivaoan techniques and how to kill quickly and painlessly, right? So for now, she waited. Fells Halgerdur ; Judith Eastman ; Matthew Harmon ; Shavan Th'zhaar [Holodeck 1 - Ensign Hudson]Hudson listened carefully as the Sivaoans explained the exercise and handed out some simple knives.
Tag: Judith Eastman [Shavan Th’zhaar, Holodeck 1] Shavan listened as Sundancer explained more about carving the end of the spear, and showed them a finished one. The Sivaoans assumed it a minor nuisance, possibly the holographic wind, as they didn't pick up any particular scents.

"If you can't feel it now, it's probably gone, or as good as gone," Judy offered reassuringly. "I figure if you two want to keep cutting them down, Max and I can trim the branches off. Or we can divide the labor the other way."It was probably not the best idea ever for the over-60 couple to chop down trees, but Judy didn't feel right issuing outright orders to account for her (and her husband's) age. Even though Commander Eastman's suggestion that if she didn't feel it any longer that it was likely gone were completely sound, the Andorian still found it difficult to rid herself of the feeling. "Perhaps so," she said to the woman's words. Though her eyes were still intent on finding the culprit. A reasonable explanation came in the form of SilverTail who pointed out one of the vines that was lingering low enough from the tree to have been the true culprit. It seemed that the explanation wasn't only suitable for her, but for the other Sivaoan, Two Dawns, whom was ready to defend against whatever threat she thought was in the area. Kova nodded at SilverTail appeased by his explanation. "No apology is warranted," she stated. Still, in her mind, she did want to have a few words with whomever thought it was necessary to include crawling things in this particular scenario. Commander Eastman's suggestion of organizing the workload did sound like a promising one. Though, the suggestion that Kova sit this out was not one the Andorian was willing to accept. Her own pride, would not allow her to accept such a suggestion. "I am still capable of completing the task," she said as she proceeded to work on the next sapling of suggested size.

It was neither exciting nor glamorous, but they appreciated the physical challenge. Idleness hadn't brought them to this age in their comparatively good health, after all. "You can still strain your back in the holodeck," Judy reminded Max, in a sort of teasing manner. "And you can break your other hip," he countered, in the same tone. "Why don't you measure these out?""I think that's a good idea," she answered, not missing a step in the branch-stripping work. "Would it be cheating to use my proper measuring tools?""I think so.""Computer, one non-rigid measuring tape, 8 meters maximum length, spooled," she ordered. The tool then materialized. Setting down her hatchet, Judy went over to the first, by now branch-free, sapling, and measured it... or at least tried. The tape wouldn't unspool when she pulled gently, and when she tugged more forcefully, some of it just crumbled, like a thin cracker. "Dammit!" she exclaimed.

[Holodeck 1 - Fells Halgerdur] Fells brushed a strand of hair behind his ear after handing one of the girls, who introduced herself as Rio Sosa, his second stick. [NPCs - CopperTail to-Allanien & Sundancer to-Srallansre - Holodeck 1]{Click me, if you dont mind parting with your appetite.} Only moments after being exposed, the animals in the bush screamed loudly. At this call, a large group of their peers, a swarm, appeared, and then charged towards the gathered group of Sivaoans and humaonids. They were fierce in appearance, ghoulish, and menacing, certainly frightful in the real world. "What are these?" Sundancer asked fearfully as he and CopperTail both began to brandish their weapons and fight the holographic terrors.

Hatchets in hand, the older couple threw themselves into the work. [NPC - Kova Sh'qaleq - Holodeck Two, Front Ear Station] Kova didn't wait long for any sort of affirmation from the others. She was not going to be the 'weakest link' among this selection of humans. She used the hatchet to chop at more of the saplings and dragged them back to the collection where Commander Eastman and her husband, Max, were chopping off the branches. Or, at least that was supposed to be their objective. It wasn't until Kova brought the sapling she had just cut down that she noticed the mature couple rather inactive considering their objective. Perhaps they were tired, or perhaps they had injured themselves. Humans were already prone to injury compared to the variety of species that littered the galaxy. There may have been some concerned that this was the case here. Either that, or fatigue had overtaken them. Either way, she assumed the wise decision would be to check on them. "Is everything all right?" Kova asked moving towards the pair. "You're not injured are you?"
