[Holodeck 1, Hunting...or Hunted]
As a group, it seemed that they were coming to the same conclusions...this was not expected, and, at CopperTail's shout, it was apparent that this was a genuine threat!
She was about to swat one of the things when someone stepped on her foot and she lost her balance, going to the ground -- not a good place to be -- so she recovered quickly, rolling up to her feet, but then the Not-Security guy yelled at her to duck, and she did just that, her training, and her experience in street-fighting kicking in so she didn't question or look, she just did, dropping out of the way in time to avoid a good blow to the head. She was up again in an instant, more willing to have her ankles chomped on than her neck, and she was able to deliver a strong kick to one that was headed right for her ankles, sending it flying.
Using the spear, she skewered one of the things, then stumbled back, drawing her knife, wishing she had a phaser! "Computer!" she shouted, "end program!" They could yell at her later for doing that, but especially if these things weren't holograms, getting rid of the fluff of the program would get rid of clutter, she hoped!
[Shavan Th’zhaar, Holodeck 1] The alien creatures seemed undeterred in their attack despite everyone’s effort to fight them off. It seemed like no one knew what they actually were. Even though they had to have been programmed to be there.. right? Shavan continued to fend them off with some fighting skill, and managed to skewer a few more. Though he was not exactly fighting for his life. Eventually a few jumped at him at once and one was able to get inside the reach of the spear; he felt a sting as it tried to sink its teeth into his leg. This elicited another curse under his breath. Fortunately it was too small to do any real damage and he was able to quickly kill it with the spear and resume fighting the last of them. Shavan heard one of the humans give the command to end the program, and briefly glanced over at her, since he had been starting to think the same thing. But he would not be surprised if it did nothing, since this all seemed to be a malfunction. Tag Judith Eastman Rio Sosa Matthew Harmon Fells Halgerdur [Holodeck 1 - Fells] It soon turned out that slowing down and mistaking the little beasts for 'the challenge of the day' was a mistake and one bit him in the soft flesh underneath his ribs. "Ouch...what the...?" He exclaimed. Fells had always thought holos shouldn't hurt and have some sort of fail save programs but when he saw a small stain on his shirt and a second one went for his leg, he remembered the one holo, he had done a long time ago, that had also had a malfunction. As Rio screamed for the program to shut off, he grabbed the animal, that had bitten into the fabric of his pants and threw it into the bushes. Now in full defense mode, he twirled the spear, used it like a bat, but also impaled a two of the pale creatures. Since he was the closest to the bushes, that they seemed to be hiding in, his next step was to put some distance between himself and the bushes. "There are too many and they bite!" He shouted in case the others hadn't noticed. The little things didn't seem overly impressed by their spears, so maybe fire or water could scare them? If only he had his phaser. "They look like they live underground...like they'd hate light? ....Can anyone light a fire?" When he had to fend for himself on the uninhabited planet Fells had to deal with many threatening creatures. He had learned that the absence of skin color was usually due to their habitat in caves or underground, which made them sensitive to bright light and fire.
[NPCs - CopperTail to-Allanien & Sundancer to-Srallansre - Holodeck 1]The holodeck did not end the program. There was a brief, very brief, flicker, but it stabilized again. The Sivaoans had to continue to fight. The fire suggestion, however, was certainly intriguing. "I have some flint that we can use," Sundancer offered, pointing with his tail towards where the knives had been placed as he fought. "Would that be safe?" CopperTail asked, always the more cautious one. "Would the Holodeck shut off? Could the fire hurt us?"Unbeknownst to the Sivaoans, the Holodeck was malfunctioning, but the station's fire-suppression systems were a separate organ, and still functioning.

Hudson got up from the ground after a moment of brief stupor and moved back away from the sort of perimeter that had been established as she was now unarmed. "If you've been hurt the safeties must be off, so the fire could hurt us as well," she explained. "I'll see if I can get a message out." She'd kept her commbadge with her as she normally did.
=/\= Ensign Hudson to Ops. Holodeck 1 is malfunctioning, request immediate emergency shutoff. =/\=The holodeck was clearly malfunctioning, but that on its own shouldn't prevent the commbadge from working. Unless of course, it was being blocked somehow.

As Kova stood there, it didn't take long before she was joined by the Sivaoan, Two Dawns, as they tried to ascertain whatever distress may have been faced by the Eastman Williams couple. Commander Eastman stated that they were fine, which did bring some relief, and that they were just having trouble with the measuring tape. Kova's eyes studied the tape briefly, but her attention was again usurped by SilverTail who said that he needed some assistance. Turning, the Andorian could see SilverTail lingering in the tree, though trapped. The Andorian's antennae straightened slightly in shock of what she was seeing. She had only managed to take a few steps towards the tree when Max summoned his wife's attention and pointed towards the measuring tape which was now a pile of crumbs on the forest floor. "The holographic matrix appears to be unstable," Kova noted. Her eyes turned back towards SilverTail. It would certainly explain how he had gotten stuck within the tree. "There should be safety protocols in place to initiate emergency shutdown in situations like this." Her eyes fell on Judy. "Who programmed this simulation?" It was probably a moot point, but there were templates that Starfleet worked from to avoid situations like this. It was entirely possible that the matrix could degrade further, leaving all of them and SilverTail in particular, susceptible to great injury. "Commander, I think you should shut the program down immediately," Kova suggested. She was confident that it wasn't necessary to elaborate on the potential dangers they were facing.

SilverTail looked awkwardly down at her, his tail lashing slightly. I don't think you should try to come up here. I'm not comfortable, but it's not hurting me. But Kkova may be right about turning off the program.

She was not in the mood right now, but she was still an officer with all the discipline and self-control that this entailed. "I'm afraid you're both right," she replied tactfully. "Computer, end program.""Task failed. Please use the arch to terminate the program," the computer answered. Judy inhaled sharply. "Computer, arch," she ordered, and the computer complied... ish. The arch appeared atop a tree trunk, about two meters above the ground, and a few branches for one to grab onto. "Oy vey," Judy muttered. In her youth, she could've climbed that herself without too much of a struggle; she still probably... maybe... could she? Max knew Judy well enough to divine that she was currently assessing whether she could do it, and that she really shouldn't. He put a firm hand around her waist, and she got the message. Reluctantly, Judy turned her eyes to Kova, who looked to be their best chance of both making it up there (which the elderly couple couldn't do) and taming the arch (which was likely beyond the Sivaoans). "I'm afraid you'll have to make the climb," she said. Sometimes, being old was no fun at all.

However, no sooner than Commander Eastman gave the order for the program to shut down, the computer gave them the proverbial middle finger (that Terrans were so fond of.) It instructed them to use the arch. It seemed simple enough, until it appeared in the trunk of one of the trees a couple of meters off the ground. Commander Eastman seemed to evaluate the situation and designated Kova as the most likely candidate to complete the task. She looked around at the others. Neither of the Sivaoans were familiar with their systems, which ruled out Two Dawns. It was not a sound course of action for either Commander Eastman or her husband, Max, to attempt the climb, especially if they fell and injured themselves. Sighing, the Andorian moved towards the base of the tree. Her eyes studied the tree's trunk for a few moments. It hadbeen years since she'd had to scale a tree. "I may be a little out of practice, she muttered lowly. The slight saving grace was the tree had a slight tilt, which Kova was hoping to use to her advantage. Climbing from the opposite side of the tree, she managed to make it up the first meter or so with relative ease. The next meter was a little more trying, and she could feel it in her arms. Her legs straddled the trunk as tightly as it could as she extended her hand to reach for the panel. Her fingertips managed to brush against the panel. Frustration set it as she forced herself up further, maybe half a meter. Again, she extended her arm, but from this vantage point, had no way of even seeing the panel. Kova closed her eyes, cursing the situation. Whomever had written this program was due an earful. Upon opening her eyes, she did her best to cling as tightly as she could to the tree. And as carefully as she could, she pivoted so that she was nearly hanging upside down on the trunk. The panel was certainly in view, but the pull of gravity was more taxing on her arm. Her legs straddled the trunk tightly as she reached for the panel. There it was, as plain as day the command to end the program. The Andorian reached as far as she could, with gravity pulling her in the opposite direction. She could already feel grip loosening. Her hand was on the panel, sliding centimeter by centimeter. "Just a little more...."The next moments seemed to happen so quickly, that Kova wasn't sure what happened first. She felt her hand slam against the control panel, but she had no idea if it had managed to strike the off switch. There had been a chime but Kova was too busy realizing that she had lost her grip of the tree's trunk and felt her body falling downwards. She saw the underside of the tree's canopy moving further and further away. It was only a few meters, but the landing would surely earn her a trip to the infirmary (if she was lucky.) Whomever said no good deed went unpunished was a sage. Kova's only regret was that they hadn't warned her about this specific moment as well. She closed her eyes, (more so) to mentally brace herself for the impact.
Tag: Judith Eastman (Judy & Max), Sven Aune , Ozu Saya (SilverTail & Two Dawns) [NPCs - SilverTail and Two Dawns - Holodeck 2] The Sivaoans watched with interest as Kova made her way up the tree (all the while thinking how very strange it was to rely so much on technology that could fail so spectacularly). The Andorian seemed fairly adept at ascending the tree, though less so as she attempted to make the holodeck turn off. There was a long moment as Kova slipped and started to fall where there was no movement. As the trees around them began to vanish and were replaced by the black and yellow grid of the holodeck, SilverTail and Kova were suddenly much closer to the ground. Two Dawns assessed the danger. She knew that despite his external differences, SilverTail was strong and flexible. He may be injured in a fall, but not badly so. The blue one with the antennae, however, Two Dawns didn't know how sturdy she was. It only took a few steps to place herself nearly under the falling body, bracing with arms and tail extended to catch Kova. When the tree disappeared and his hands were free, SilverTail looked over his shoulder to see that he was approaching ground that was much closer than it had been a moment before. He twisted his body, bringing all four paws underneath himself. If he'd still been as high as the tree, he would have been fine, but his fall was too fast for him to be completely ready for the landing. His chin slammed into the deck, causing him to stagger dizzily.

The Andorian was expecting the impact of her body against the solid floor, but found herself being spared the hard collision as her fall was braced by one of the Sivaoans, Two Dawns. She was uncertain to what extent the Sivaoan may have injured herself for Kova's sake, but she was grateful to have been spared the brunt of the fall. "Thank you," she said softly as she moved to stand on her own. As she heard Commander Eastman call for medical teams, Kova looked at everyone, hoping that no one had been injured too greatly. It did seem that SilverTail had taken a fairly nasty fall as he moved about. Kova slowly moved a bit closer to Judy. She did lower her voice a bit as she spoke. "If it's okay with you, I'd like the opportunity to review those systems," she posed. "Just to make certain it's only a malfunction."

[Shavan Th’zhaar, Holodeck 1] While the fire idea sounded like it would work, Shavan didn’t know how to start one without a phaser. The human girl’s call for assistance was an even better idea, if it worked. There was a pause when he thought communications might be blocked and it would be as effective as trying to shut off the program themselves had been. Then another of the creatures leaped at him and he lunged forward to spear it, but never connected. He stumbled forward, a little off balance as a result; the creature had vanished into thin air, along with his spear and the rest of the jungle environment. He quickly regained his footing and looked around at the others now standing in the empty hologrid. “So what now?” He wondered if they would be expected to reload the program and try again at some point, if it could be fixed. He’d managed not to offend the Sivaoans so far and didn’t want to be rude by leaving too soon, though he had already taken a few steps toward the door. “That wasn’t how I imagined hunting.” But he said this in good humor- after all he had learned something, and it hadn’t been boring. Now that the program was off without any serious harm done, it was actually sort of funny. Tag Judith Eastman Fells Halgerdur Rio Sosa Matthew Harmon

[Holodeck 1 - Fells]
The program was gone as quickly as it had been set up. All plants, animals, spears and such dissapeared. When he looked down at his shirt, he saw that, unfortunately, the bites didn't dissapear, though. Looking around he saw that the rest of the station inhabitants as well as their guests were okay but looked a little ruffled.
He had to laught at Shavan's words. "We were being hunted...that's the last time I'm trusting anything on this old rust bucket station!" He shook his head with a little anger. Apparently the station had a history of malfunctions.
Fells went over to Rio, who he had given the branch to and looked her over. "Are you okay?" She had been under attack by the little beasts because she was just as close to the bush as he had been.
At least the program had shut off, who knows what could have happened.

[Holodeck 1]
"I'm fine." Rio shook her head, looking down at her pants, noticing several small rips. "Seems like my britches are a little worse for the wear, though." Grinning, she shook her head. "I wonder what happened, I mean..."
Yeah, with physical evidence, that confirmed that something was really amiss. "Thanks for the help...Fells, right?"
She took a breath and looked around, seeing that no one seemed any worse for the wear, then announced, "I'm going to go report this to Ryah...those things were here and now they're not, so we need to know where they went...and where they came from."
The little toothy beasts could be a major security issue, especially if they weren't contained. "Maybe we can get that carnivorous plant on their trail and let it take care of them?" She laughed.

[...] Two Dawns assessed the danger. Judy and Max stood back, letting the young and healthy do the work. It was awkward for Judy, a little embarrassing, but she'd be no good to anyone with more broken bones. Thankfully, it all worked out, though SilverTail did not look entirely well. "We can get Medical here soon," Judy said as she headed out. "Max, can you get my glasses?"Max retrieved Judy's readers from her backpack as they walked out towards the control panel. "Since all holoprograms run on the one computer core, it's likely they're having problems just like we are," she explained as she put on the specs and deactivated all holodecks. =A= "Eastman to medical. Send crews to the holodecks," =A= came the order soon afterwards. [ Kova Sh'qaleq - Holodeck Two, Front Ear Station] The Kerelian jungle canopy slowly filtered away, giving way to the yellow and black holographic grid. Kova had accomplished her task, but there were certain laws that couldn't be denied. One of those being gravity. "Just to make certain it's only a malfunction." [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Max Williams - Outside the Holodecks]Judy looked thoughtfully over her glasses at Kova. "That would be wise," she said. "I think Chief Ozu and her people will like to see your findings, as would I."Judy still hoped to be able to make some design drawings, perhaps once they resolved this malfunction, but for now she supposed she'd have to deal with the fallout of all this. ***
Three Days Later
[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Michael Eastman - First Officer's quarters, Front Ear Station]"So what happened after you shut down the holodeck?" Michael asked, having commandeered what was supposed to be a bedtime story into a debriefing of Commander Grandma. "Well, we all dispersed for a bit, while we figured out what happened," Judy answered. "I met with the dignitaries in my office, and apologized for the mishap.""So what caused it?" Michael asked. "One of them, actually, accidentally overwrote certain protocols with his own holonovel," Judy explained, being intentionally vague. The dignitary in question was Shadow, which she didn't share because she was bound by certain confidentiality even towards her family, and the nature of the holonovel she didn't reveal for... different reasons. "As a result, the code was corrupted, and the programs malfunctioned.""So what did you do?" Michael asked, expecting to hear about how Grandma saved the day. "We fixed the programs, and ran the simulations again. This time, Grandpa's shoes were ruined a little bit, but everything else went fine," Judy explained, leaving Michael a little underwhelmed. "Will you work with the Siv-ow-ans?" he asked, hoping for one upside. "We will. We might not do everything their way, but I think their advice is good," Judy replied. "Now, I need to go put Grandpa to sleep.""Was I a good dip-lo-mat?" Michael asked, before his beloved grandmother could leave. "Yes you were," Judy answered, before leaning in to give the 6-year-old a little good night kiss. "Good night, Mikey.""Good night, Grandma."Judy then went back to the master bedroom to get some sleep herself. As for when the next encounter with the Sivaoans would be, that remained to be seen, but Judy expected it would be on Kerelia. FIN
