[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Shared Dream - Maze] Saya lifted one eyebrow and said quietly, Indeed, before following the other officer down the path. She tried to guide by the sound of the voices she heard, but Saya soon realized that there were voices coming from more than one direction. Also, being a maze, it wasn't possible to trace a straight line from their location to any of the voices. After hitting several dead-ends, Saya stopped at a crossroads and folded her arms. I cannot hear the voices well enough to use that to guide us. And this appears to be a traditional maze, which means it's actually rather foolish to attempt to follow the voices. She tapped her foot for a minute. I cannot claim any great skill with solving mazes, but is there not some strategy of always taking either right or left turns? It would take longer, possibly, but then we are less likely to simply wander and become lost. The StrangerSomething is wrong. The walls of the illusion shimmered again, changing from the lush maze, to blank, white walls, and back again. The tendrils of dark, empty shadow that comprised the physical manifestation of its being reached out to the dreamers in every corner of its playground. You will take the test, the voice warned, dripping with malevolence once again. It addressed the dreamer who had been trapped in a past with his sire, the dreamer who had questioned herself, the dreamer who ran from vicious beasts and the one who ran from a bogeyman, the dreamer who had let go of his present self and chosen to live only in his past, the near-naked dreamer, the dreamer who drowned in her guilt and the one who desired only cheese. To each of them, it reached, all at once. I will not lose my subjects. One by one, others were torn from its influence. It roared. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Shared Dream - Maze] Isaiah followed Saya, yet after several attempts they found that they had met no real progress, each time coming to dead ends which forced them back. During this last attempt, they found themselves back at a crossroads, as Saya began to verbally strategize. She confessed that she had no real skill with solving mazes and inquired he assumed if he was aware of any strategies. Isaiah took a deep breath as he concluded of a single strategy. "As you said, we shouldn't follow the voices, but perhaps we follow the maze."He reached out to touch a single side of maze's floral wall. "If we follow this single wall, it should lead us to one of the openings," Isaiah stated. "As you said... we have no other vantage of the maze than being in it. If it has an actual entrance and exit, concentrating on this single wall should bring us to either one of them." He conceded that it could take more time, but he couldn't think of a more efficient means of exiting this maze. He then began to move along the maze, his hand trailing along the floral wall as they began to advance through the maze, there was an instance when Isaiah felt his hand actually pass through the wall. Only to be replaced by a wall and then the original greenery that had been there before. "Did you see that?" Isaiah asked, removing his hand from the wall altogether. "Don't touch anything," he cautioned Saya as he continued to watch. He then heard something. A voice... making an insistent decree... or plea for them to submit to some sort of test. Isaiah simply stood firm, though his eyes were on Saya, not wanting to lose sight of his fellow crewman.

He stop and heard her message that this thing was not going to give his Mother back. For a second his heart stopped and though of what she said. It took a second for him to realize this did not make sense and there might not be a way to be reunited with his mother. “I miss her. I can’t believe I was mean to her.” . The Teenager said. A small tear would start coming from his cheek. As he tried hard to fight back against the realization that she might be gone and that this was not a simple situation of a holonovel that we solve the puzzles and we get a happy ending. The teenager listened as they talked about enlistment. The kid would walk next to Felicity and Sir Doug and then said “I might not be strong, or smart. But I do know that standing with other people is closer to light than a test by yourself. You should treat people with kindness, because you don’t know when you will not see them again”. The teenager finished as he was still holding back the tears. [the dream-maze] Alex wasn’t quite sure why he would want to take the test unknowing if it would go horribly wrong. It wouldn’t have been a good idea to take a test alone but they were definitely going to be stronger together. Although maybe it wasn’t a good idea to have any sort of probe enlightenment shoved up his butt. Subjects? Doug realized that this wasn't a standard cult-leader sort of malignant being. This was a "scientist", but one without ethical standards. "Let me tell you something, as a real scientist," the El-Aurian offered, putting on a stoic display. "It's usually a good idea to make sure your test subjects sign all the disclosure and liability forms. I had to fake my death once over that; it wasn't fun."Just as soon as he finished speaking, Doug felt a certain heaviness in his eyelids, like he was about to fall asleep. He resisted it, but he wasn't certain if he should. Isaiah Quinn - Deck 7, Science Lab, USS Mac] He could feel gravity pulling him down, and as his eyes opened he could only see the ceiling getting further away. It was barely a second later that he felt his momentum cease as he collided with the floor. He head even collided with the carpeted deck with a slight thump. Groaning, he rolled from the downed chair until he was on his knees. He could hear the whine of the klaxon fill the air as tried to get his bearings. Instinctively, his hand reached for the back of his head to judge the severity of the injury. It felt like nothing more than a bump. Certainly nothing a visit to Sickbay wouldn't cure. Sickbay. His mind instantly drifted to Thea. He started to get to his feet, and as he did he realized that he was back in Sickbay. No longer in the maze that he and Chief Ozu had been in only a moment ago. "Computer, what are the current locations of Doctor Thea Baker and Chief Ozu Saya?" It didn't take long before the computer gave an affirming chime before answering his question. "Doctor Baker is currently in Sickbay. Chief Ozu is currently in her quarters."Somehow, hearing that seemed to be a relief. Wherever they had been, it seemed that Saya had made it back as well. He made a mental note to check on her as soon as he could. However, he had one stop to make first. Moving towards the door, he left the lab and ventured into the corridor. He moved as quickly as he could at a brisk walk. There was a bit of dizziness, hence he didn't chance running. His hand reached for the bulkhead to help maintain his balance during a few spells that almost felt like they were about to turn the corridor upon his ear. Luckily, it wasn't too far before he reached his destination. As the doors parted, the young scientist stepped into Sickbay. His hand reached up to check the back of his head once more. There was a slight throb, but at present it was secondary on his mind. "Thea?" he called. As his eyes scanned the area in search of her, he braced his hand on the frame of the door for support. The sound of the alert really wasn't helping things.

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Bridge, USS Mac] A throaty purr escaped her curved lips, as the images in her mind played vividly in her subconscious. "Mmmmm... Matthew." She had barely uttered a whisper, but whatever was playing in her mind seemed to halt suddenly. Her head rolled from side to side until suddenly, her eyes burst open. The alarm was sounding. S'Riia was on her feet in a blur, though her uniform was torn in... places. She quickly did her best to secure her uniform as best as possible, momentarily wondering just how real that dream had... felt. Her mind seemed to juggle the notion that it had been a dream, and felt so... real. Ew!! Of course, it couldn't have been real. Har-- he was nowhere in sight. And... she had been on duty. Had she actually fallen asleep while on duty? Looking around, she noticed others starting to get their bearings as well. It appeared that no one else had their uniforms torn. At the moment, the prevailing cover would be some nightmare where she bashed a band of Nausicaans. It had to sound better than what she'd actually dream about. Figures, he of all people would find a way to infiltrate her subconscious. S'Riia quickly turned her attention to her station. It seemed that Captain Ellis had initiated an Intruder alert. Her scans ran through the ship, but she detected no unauthorized personnel presently aboard. At first glance no more and no less than had been their when they left the station. "Bridge here, Captain. Current scans don't reveal any additional life signs aboard. There are, however, elevated levels of calanite dispersed throughout the ship." It was all that she had to report, but it wasn't going to stop her from looking. She began to scan the area outside of the ship to see if there was any evidence of a ship in the vicinity of the Mac.

You're actually Azaria and you think you're dreaming. I don't think we're dreaming. But also not awake." She grimaced and raked her hands through her hair. It was hard to figure out how to explain a feeling. "Didn't you ever hear Khami Tu Khesta? It's..." she clicked her tongue, thinking, "Trill novel where this fungus ... I'm not saying that's fungus ... creates a shared unconsciousness in order feed on the bodies of ... nah, I don't want to spoil it for you. In case you read it ..." She trailed off. Elijah’s brows drew together at Kaya’s question, and for a brief second, he wondered if this was the real Kaya or if the clone he had seen earlier was truly her. The thought that he might still be being toyed with frustrated him but he wasn’t sure how to handle the situation. He stepped away from her, ready to ask questions; make her prove she was who she appeared to be but then she was turning away and shouting.
“What do you mean?” He asked her, “What novel? If you know what’s going on, you have to tell me.” His voice that usually betrayed none of his emotion betrayed him now as desperation edged its way in. He reached out to her but stopped when the maze… faded? Flickered? He wasn’t sure how to explain it. This was unlike any dream he’d ever had or any nightmare he’d been trapped in. If they weren’t in a maze, where were they? He tried to grasp Kaya, ground them in each other, but as the voice - the shadow man, the stranger - called out and roared; he felt even this reality pulled from between his fingers.
Elijah shot up with such a force, he almost keeled over and out of bed. He whipped the covers back and stood, the floor felt sold beneath his feet but he didn’t trust himself to be fully awake. His quarters looked as it should, but then so had his childhood bedroom. He turned and turned and turned, taking in the detail of his room and breathing harshly. The bloodstain on his bedsheets reminded him again of his injury, the injury that still bled and hurt. But how? Surely not… but how…? Elijah’s head pounded as he tried to trust in his consciousness, but he couldn’t fully convince himself he wasn’t still asleep.
Donning some underwear and trousers, he found a clean cloth to put over his wound and a shirt to take with him. He left his rooms and quickly made his way towards the turbolift, scanning for signs of other people. [Deck 5 > Deck 7 > Sickbay]
Lots of people were scattered around, waking up or helping one another. Lights flashed red. What had happened? He avoided any gazes that met his, knowing he looked far from okay which was what he preferred to look like. The lift took him to sickbay, and he shuffled in barefoot with sweat across his face and torso.
“ Chief,” he said in terse greeting, glad to see his superior. His headache was increasing by the second but he didn’t stop. Instead he found the medical supplies he needed to stitch the gash in his side, gritting his teeth and swearing under his breath as he cleaned and dressed it. Pulling his clean shirt on over his shoulders had him swearing again but once he was dressed, he took in the rest of sickbay. “ What can I do?” He asked Chief Baker, making his way to her. What he really wanted to do was ask her what had happened, what she knew, if where they were now was really real- but he didn’t. Others needed medical assistance and that came first.

There were things she needed to know that would not wait for a report. After all, they had no idea what this thing was, or if it could return. Baker had mentioned that Th'zhaar had assisted with the rescue plan - that's who she wanted to speak to. =/\= "Ellis to Th'zhaar. If I recall correctly, resonance bursts are an effective measure against psionic energy." She turned from S'Riia's station, hesitated for a moment, and then looked around. "And someone get me a really, really strong coffee. Stat."
Tags: Shavan Th'zhaar and Isaiah Quinn (softs). ~~~ [Ready Room, USS Mac - En Route to Front Ear Station]Two days later "I've been transferred."With a sigh, she fell backwards onto the lounge chair in the Captain's ready room and just about stopped herself from dramatically picking up a useless, decorative cushion and tossing it across the room. "Computer, pause personal log," she ordered, mid-dictation, and brought the tumbler to her lips for a fiery sip of Jameson. A lot of it had sloshed over the rim of her glass with her movements, but she wasn't overly concerned about keeping a clean office at that moment. Besides, she deserved it. "Computer, resume," she took another smaller, more thoughtful sip, and continued. "We're hurtling back towards Front Ear at maximum warp, where I'll board the Normandy and head back to Sierra, where I'll apparently learn more about my new assignment. Nobody seems inclined to tell me more than that, so I wasn't inclined to be all that polite about it in return." Another sigh, accompanied by a couple of moments of blessed darkness as she squeezed her eyes shut and tried to chase off the remnants of all those nightmarish bogeymen that had plagued their dreams several cycles before. "It is a shame, really. We'd just begun to learn each other. I can see the start of solid bonds and relationships forming between the crew; some developing from a mutual respect, others a little deeper. With familiarity often comes increased productivity, but it's not just about bottom lines and bean-counting. Crew become people you can rely on, people who will work toward keeping each other safe... they can even be family."
"Well, they'll still have that. Just without me."She kicked off her boots and pulled her feet up beneath her thighs, her fingers wrapped around one of her ankles tightly. "It has been a challenging couple of days. We never identified the psionic being that had held us captive in shared illusions, but with each light-year of distance we put between us and that area of space, the sounder we'll all sleep. I've submitted multiple reports to HQ, who have officially declared the region out of bounds to Fleet traffic. They have also sent their condolences and regards to the parents of Ensign Tara Lennon, the young science officer we lost during the being's incursion." Felicity's stomach churned at the thought, and she tried to quell it with more whiskey. "She simply did not wake up. There seems to be no obvious cause of death - the team have just said that her body shut down and stopped working, all organs simultaneously. I can't say how, or why with any professional certainty, but Tara Lennon might have been the only reason the strange being did not bother returning. Some of us believe that maybe it had gotten what it came for."
"It's a bittersweet end to an all too brief sojourn out here in the dark nowhere." She raised her glass in a toast, all alone in her office with only sentiment and whiskey to keep her company. "To the crew, to the Mac for taking us this far, and to the Frontier."She drained the contents of the glass and grinned broadly at her own bloody bathos.
