[ Orya - Dies Irae, Private Chambers to Bridge] [...] O'Ran nodded his acknowledgement and hurried off before his Princess took her anger out on him, leaving Orya furious until she followed him and made her way to the Bridge. " R'Tesh report" she declared then addressed the rest of the bridge crew. " Be warned, O'Ran has orders to find and kill whoever betrayed us and led those Bataq's to our sacred system". [Commander R'Tesh - Dies Irae, Talorian Space]"Your Highness!" R'Tesh stood briefly to attention, her back ramrod straight. Her flashing eyes held a warning for all. The rest of the crew stood or straightened as the formiddable Princess swept onto the bridge, threats ready and robe swishing behind her. The Commander had been pouring over the technical read-outs at the tactical station, trying to discern if there was a way they could match the Goliath of a ship that had arrived with no introduction. "It is the Federation, Highness, there is no doubt." Her voice was a sneer as she projected her calculations onto the main viewer. "They call it a Sovereign class. Ablative armour, double-hull with what looks to be automatically modulated shields. Phasers, a range of torpedoes."She stepped to the side, careful not to show any hint of emotion. "Awaiting your command, Princess."
Tag: Thea Baker (Orya) *** [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Sickbay] He could tell that Tyler was ready to get this over with. He couldn’t blame her, if course, but his priority was getting leads not her comfort. Fortunately, before she made her exit she did give him some more details on these cultish tribal masks. Perhaps Doug could find some use for that information. =/\= Harmon to Sir Doug. The survivors couldn’t give much information, however they did mention the attackers wore tribal masks with long elongated faces, and three triangles, two for the eyes and one for the mouth. Apparently they were painted red with what the survivor thinks is blood. Does this line up with any of your readings? =/\= As Harmon was talking to Doug, he noticed Charlie slip out of the room. For a moment he weighed up if he should let her be or follow her. Eventually, perhaps against his better judgment he decided to try and talk to her. Attempt that empathy thing Chloe had been telling him all about. “Ms Fox. Charlie,” he said as he caught her, hesitating as he tried to think of what to say. “That was your first time encountering anything like that in person wasn’t it?” He asked softly. He remembered the first time he saw a mangled corpse. It was never easy the first time. As the war progressed he had become desensitised. Accepted it as an inevitably and something that couldn’t always be avoided. But he understood how it could effect a person all too well. [Charlie Fox - Sickbay -> Corridor, USS Mac]It was hard not to be a little preoccupied, considering the circumstances. There was little else she'd be able to find out hanging around Sickbay, unless she's suddenly been given access to the labs or the bridge, so she decided that unwinding and getting her thoughts down while they were all so fresh would be the best course of action. Olsen hovering at her shoulder, she stepped outside and looked left, then right, trying to remember which direction she was supposed to be heading in. She'd just decided on right when Harmon's unmistakable voice saying her name stalled her. All thoughts of a smart, sharp remark faded as he finished his query. "Yes," she said, then shook her head and instinctively folded her arms against her chest. "I've seen bodies of murdered men, I've seen victims of slavery, but never anything quite like that." Her tone turned somewhat rueful, though she felt no shame in admitting how disturbed she'd been, still was. "Even lost some of my breakfast on Lieutenant Niles' shoes." Despite the situation, that drew a small smirk. "What do you think the chances are of justice here?" She asked, her eyes flicking from her holorecorder and back to Harmon, before she hastily added, "Off the record." She had a feeling that he was needed elsewhere, but she couldn't stop herself from asking.

[ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] Delivering an autopsy report was never easy even after all of these years of having to perform them and yet this time felt different somehow and it took Thea a few moments to realise why as Sir Doug listened and shared his thoughts on what she had found. Yes it was barbaric, evil in fact but for Thea it had definitely affected her more than being able to shut off like normal and it was likely down to being a firsthand witness to the torture and seeing the way they had just been discarded. Although hearing more about these Talorian's would of usually been something of interest and their practices but since discovering that they were responsible for the attack, Thea had very little sympathy for them. Yes they had evidence, but there were still a lot of questions that they needed answered so they could learn and judge fairly. Was it out of desperation, some lone group who didn't like what was happening on their planet, so took matters into their own hands or simply their way of using and showing what they were capable of?. Until they got those answers assuming they were willing to part with that information, it was all speculation as the red alert sounded and Niles answered Doug, before making a recommendation about the enemy ship and the use of torpedoes. Then it was Som who spoke up and didn't blame the Engineer for what she said. However with Perry in charge, she knew it was up to him to restore order and remind the Tactical Lieutenant, to reign it in as he wasn't the only one who wanted justice for the Jupiter Star and that there was the right way to do it and not with guns blazing. So when the Commodore did speak, Thea listened and she couldn't of said it better herself, including how they would be dealing with this, once they got in range. " I know we all want to see them brought to justice but there is the right way to do this and hopefully we'll get all the answers we need as to their real motive for doing this, despite the evidence pointing to some traditional or ritual practice".Thea paused for a moment then spoke to Niles, with a view to Science assisting if needed. " What's the status of the other ship?, Are they aware of our presence and is there anything about the moon, that might cause interference?".

Quinn stepped onto the Bridge. The flashing red lights matched the hue that had been within the confines of the turbolift. As he made his way towards his station, another science officer slid seamlessly out of the seat. He had been in Sickbay's medlab finalizing his report on the crime scene. There wasn't much to offer out of the ordinary from what he'd discovered. It was easy to confirm Talorian DNA, but there was also an interesting compound of note. He had forwarded his findings to one of the chemists on the Science Deck, but it seemed that the blades that had been used were coated with some sort of compound (a resin or a salve) that seemed to react to organic matter catalyzing an exothermic byproduct. It made for efficient removal of the organs... almost as efficient as a laser scalpel. In trained hands, it could be quite effective. Though, assuming the Talorians had acted with haste and little regard for life, it was possibly more like lacing the victims' innards with drops of a potent acid, burning them from the inside out as they bled out. All were details that would make it into his report, however, Isaiah could tell that he had walked in on quite the debate. It seemed that Petty Officer Som had expressed her opinion concerning their tactical approach to the Talorians. Quinn could understand, the last thing he wanted to see was for this to descend into a gunfight. Even Quinn wasn't sure if approaching them with weapons primed was the best idea. That alone could possibly provoke a confrontation that they hoped to avoid. The comment about slipping fingers directed towards Lieutenant Niles hadn't gone unnoticed either. Perhaps it was Thea attempting to bring calmer heads back to center when she asked about the status of the Talorian ship and whether or not the moon would cause some interference. Quinn allowed Niles to report on the status of the Talorian's ship, but spoke to issues regarding the moon. "There is a region of space between the moon and the planet that's a bit of a blind spot at the moment. The poles of both the moon and the planet are currently in proximity of one another and will be for about the next... two to three hours. Basically, an armada could be hiding right there, and we'd never see it unless we're looking out a portole." Of course, if they were that close, then it'd probably be too late.

Niles' voice was flat and hard, and his face a mask when he acknowledged the order that would bring the Mac to battle stations and his hands danced over his console to bring weapons online and get the targeting sensors active. It was time to go after those savages, and the recently-minted Lieutenant had a cold, dangerous light in his eyes as he completed the tasks he needed to in order to go into action. And just as the klaxon finished sounding, he heard what Doctor Baker and Sir Doug had to say, and for a moment he was not certain of the relevance of the information being presented. However, there was something that he needed to say. "Sir Doug, honestly, I don't see how that matters at all. From where we're standing, it was piracy, torture and murder of Federation citizens. Ideology isn't a defence for that sort of crimes."Then, as he locked his sensors on the target, something they would be certain to notice as he made no efforts to hide. Let them know they had been seen. Let them know who had their sights on them. However, he was still much too far. "Sir, we are well out of weapons range of them. I recommend we close within torpedo range before we hail them."

Would that work through this sort of interference?" the ancient man suggested. It was, all things considered, not the most advanced technique. One could strap a video camera to a bird, or a balloon, or an advanced scientific probe. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]The young Lieutenant's heart was pounding in his ears. The orders he had received had been clear. They would get in close, within the three hundred thousand kilometers of maximum phaser range, before issuing their challenge. And, not having been ordered to get a full weapons lock, the Tactical officer was left to running firing solutions using what was coming in through passive sensors rather than bringing up his active targeting array. He was going to keep himself ready to engage at the drop of a hat, doing the best he could with what he had. How he wanted to give them their initial hail with a brace of torpedoes across their bow. How he wanted to have them under a full weapons lock they would definitely know about, let them know of the firepower that was pointed right at them. How he wanted to make them pay for what they had done. That was why he had joined Starfleet and become a tactical officer: to protect good people from those who'd do them harm. He had failed to protect the crew of the Jupiter Star, but at least he could make sure they would never do the same to anyone else. However, when Commander Baker asked about their status, and the very clear sign showed on Niles' sensors that they had raised shield showed on his board. "They know we're here, Ma'am. No activity from the inner system but our target has raised shields."The Talorians who had attacked the Jupiter Star were right there and it felt as though the full impulse of their intercept course was like moving through molasses. A quarter of the speed of light, and they might as well have been crawling. The three million kilometers from relative rest of maximum torpedo wrench came and went, and he had a number of firing plans programmed. Firing harmless warning shots across their bow that would hit nothing but vacuum; firing to disarm them; firing to stop them from running; firing to turn them into an expanding cloud of debris and plasma. All he would need was the word and he would execute any of them. He was ready for it, to bring forth that kind of destruction to bear. In the deepest reaches of his mind, something had awoken: something cold, something ruthless. Something he never knew he had. He had been trained for this, gone through countless simulations. But he had never felt this, that instinct to want to hurt someone else. He had been surprised when the royal ship had been destroyed in front of him and he hadn't felt this. When he had his sights on Jeren, he hadn't felt this either. But now? That was something new... and he was not sure if he should be exulting in this new feeling, or if he should be ashamed of it. But now was not the time for this. And then, at long last, they entered the extreme range of their phaser arrays. So, he addressed the Commodore. "Sir, entering phaser range now. Standing by to hail them."Or to open fire, he did not add, even though the controls to bring his active sensors to bear to finalize his weapons lock and the lurid red ones that would activate his weapons were just there, begging to be used.

[ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] The questions that she had asked in order to not only restore some calm but also as a reminder that they were still dealing with a potential enemy, were quickly answered as Isaiah spoke first. Listening to the issues that could hinder the conclusion of this investigation, before Sir Doug offered a solution that might circumvent and help them find out more information. Of course it would be down to Perry to give the go ahead for a modified probe as Niles then acknowledged her and informed that the other ship had raised shields. That wasn't a surprise especially if their arrival had been detected by the Talorian's and now it became a waiting game to see what would happen next. Although as they got within range of the other ship and Niles prepared to open a channel, the Doctor wondered if they would get a response or if they would be brave enough to try to run instead. Either way this was about to get a lot more tense as Perry then issued orders. When the Commodore then turned to her and said that there was no need to delay, Thea agreed with him. " Agreed, no point in delaying the inevitable and now we see if they're willing to talk or not".Now it was up to the Talorian's but at least the crew of the Mac was prepared to deal with them with whatever outcome they took. ********************* [ Princess Orya - Dies Irae] The euphoria of the ritual had completely disappeared as her anger boiled, her skin flushed with fury as R'Tesh acknowledged her presence and the others realised exactly what was at stake if they failed to comply. Of course she was tempted to unleash her anger and begin the cull of taking their tongues but she held back as R'Tesh delivered her own warning to those who dare to disobey. Following R'Tesh as she informed her what was going on and projected the information for her to see more clearly, though it did little to tame her fury. Although she did take a moment to look it over properly, not that she was afraid of the Bataq's and their fancy ship. The Dies Irae could certainly hold its own against such a beast and she wasn't afraid. So when R'Tesh stepped to one side to await her command, Orya considered their options. " Your Highness ... we're receiving a hail from the Starfleet ship".Orya glared at the underling, who had interrupted her thoughts but decided to allow the hail to be heard, taking great joy in listening to their request for them to respond. " We won't answer and prepare to engage them, they will soon regret that they tried to make us bow down to them and their ways".

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Bridge ]Kaya had expected to get thrown off the bridge but the patronizing pat on the head from the Commodore was worse. His defense of so-called righteous anger and setting up a 'they shot first' excuse made Kaya feel insane. She looked around the bridge for someone else who shared her concern. Even Doctor Baker seemed in robotic step with Perry. The bridge was crewed with mannequins. She stared holes at the back of Niles's head until Perry directed her to help Quinn withe probe. She mumbled an affirmative and got up to join Quinn at his station. "Just convert one of the emitters to scatter incoming light or radiation in a crystalline pattern. It'll make it look like a stray from the icy asteroid belt," she told him, her normal go-get'em markedly dulled. "Or I don't know, tape a knife to it." Isaiah Quinn, general bridge

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Corridor]
Harmon chuckled awkwardly at the mention of her throwing up all over Niles' shoes. "I'd have liked to have seen his face," he smiled, "A bit uptight that one." The more lighthearted tone soon disappeared again however, as she asked about the chances of bringing the attackers to justice. "I uh...," he started to say, unsure of how to phrase things. "I don't like making promises or assurances I can't keep. I don't like speculating when I don't have enough to go on," he explained. "But the Commodore and everyone on the bridge was outraged. Starfleet won't be able to ignore this, especially not with a watchful ambitious journalist on board. So there's going to be political will to get something done, and that means there's a much better chance that even if we don't catch them today or on this patrol we'll get them eventually. The Talorians could make things tricky but I imagine the Commodore and those higher up the food chain will be eager to catch them," he said. "We've also got a few leads, we're tracking a ship that we're fairly sure was behind it. The Mac is much more powerful if it comes to a violent confrontation," he paused again for a moment before speaking in a slightly quieter tone. "Though I'd rather it not come to a violent confrontation. I want to get whatever information we can from their crew and their ship. I want them alive. If they're part of something larger, we need to know," he let out a slight sigh and relaxed a bit. "Off the record of course," he said with a grin.

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Bridge] His words seemed to have sunk in for the very young lieutenant, as far as Perry could tell. There was a lot of information flying about the bridge, and even as he would have acknowledged Sir Doug's suggestion, the El-Aurian received a comm from Harmon. Instead, Perry offered him a nod and turned to the science station. Lt. Quinn, launch a probe, but send it off in a roundabout path that doesn't go near that ship. Let's not give them cause to jump the gun. In fact, Petty Officer Som, if you can do anything to camouflage it, that would be even better. When Niles reported that they were within range of the other vessel, Perry nodded to Thea and said, Since they know we're here, there's no use delaying. Open a channel. He paused, then said, This is Commodore Calvin Perry of the Federation starship Mac. Please respond. He perched on the edge of the captain's chair, fingers digging into the arms as they waited tensely for a response. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]"Aye Sir, hailing frequencies open," Niles acknowledged upon receiving the order to hail them. And while the Commodore spoke to the Talorians, the young Lieutenant kept his eyes on his board. If the Talorians were going to blink, he would know. At first, there was no answer, but he did not think anything of it. Their communications protocols might need a moment to sync up with the Mac's. However, the Talorian ship's posture changed. The predatory vessel was coming about just as its weapons came online and its targeting sensors came alive and locked onto the Mac. It would seem that a peaceful resolution was going to be out of the question in the immediate... "Sir!" The Tactical officer's voice came like whipcrack from his station. "The Talorian ship is coming about, they have powered weapons, and they have a lock on us."In the face of that immediate threat, he returned their weapons lock in kind and matching their current displayed level of aggression. However, his hands still hovered over just over his firing controls, ready to enact any of the firing plans he had prepared at the drop of a hat, or just simply hammer them into scrap metal, or an expanding cloud of debris and plasma.

He didn’t really know too much about the tallorians so he wouldn’t know how they were going to react. He was going to learn just from observation just how they dealt with some things. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Sickbay] He could tell that Tyler was ready to get this over with. Tag: Charlie Fox [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Bridge]With Starfleet doing its business, Sir Doug stepped back. Harmon's call was firmly in line with such a tack from the ancient gentleman. =A= "That would fit with their rituals and religion. Zaman out," =A= he answered. In his head, thanks to a lifetime or two as a lawyer, he began to build the case. The masks would make it harder to identify the assailants, but the ship confronting them now was circumstantial evidence aplenty.

[Charlie Fox - Corridor, USS Mac]As Harmon claimed he wasn't inclined to make promises or assertions with so little to go on, Charlie found herself nodding in agreement. She often practiced the same herself, just in case someone unused to the concept of speculation took her at her word. Thankfully, neither she nor Harmon seemed to be quite so hopeful in nature. She said nothing about the reason she was there, or who was bankrolling her or exerting pressure on Command. He was correct that they'd want heads for this. "The Talorians might not want to hand over their people," she offered thoughtfully then in agreement with his musings, finger tapping the side of her chin. "There's very little known about them, or their justice system. Do they even have one?" She was unconsciously brainstorming her article, listing questions she'd need answered before she could submit it. "I shudder to think what kind of society you'll be dealing with if harvesting the organs of live victims is their norm." It was possible they were outliers, but even if it was the case that they were separatists, they wouldn't have licked their practices off stones. This barbarism came from somewhere, and it all sounded very dangerous to Charlie. "Off the record - this could turn into a total clusterfu-" She was cut off by a rumble. "... What was that?"

Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] It was a little unnerving. They seemed to be entertaining a volatile situation both from the Talorians and from within as well. Several members of the crew had openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation, but it seemed that for the time being professionalism had won out. Even Isaiah had reservations about launching a probe. Truth be told, it could just as easily be seen as a sign of aggression. Still, orders were orders, and it didn't take long for Commodore Perry to assign Petty Officer Som to assist with the probe. "Aye, sir," Isaiah replied. At least they were going out of their way to avoid drawing the Talorians attention. "That's a pretty clever approach," Isaiah said softly to Kaya's suggestion. He lowered his voice just a bit to convey his own support to her point of view. "Hopefully, it'll keep things from escalating any further." His hands moved across his panel, pausing a moment so that Petty Officer Som could review his work. "Proble ready... and launching."The science officer's eyes turned to look at the trajectory of the probe, but was immediately captured by something else. Not an object moving away from the ship, but coming towards the Mac. "Incoming!" he announced, but with little warning as the ship jolted with a slight rumble. So much for avoiding a conflict.

Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Joshua Niles' world had just shrank drastically. Within it, all that existed was himself, the Tactical console before him, and voices that his brain could only identify as being his peers, subordinates or superiors. That, and the knowledge that those who had their weapons locked on the Mac had butchered a civilian crew. A knowledge that brought forward a rage the young man was not entirely sure if he should embrace or be ashamed of. But it was there, sharpening his mind, focusing every minute of training he had received and had prepared him for moments just like this. When a torpedo flashed out of the Talorian ship, he had not even had the chance to call out the incoming threat when Lieutenant Quinn shouted it out and the plasma warhead struck their shields. However, he did not even bother to call out a shield status report, the loss had been manageable, but when the order to return fire came, his hand started to come down, ready to obliterate those savages... But the order was to make them combat-ineffective, to avoid destroying them if he could. "Returning fire," he simply acknowledged, his voice hard and unforgiving, and emotionless save for an ice-cold edge of rage his training and discipline were barely keeping in check And so he did, striking the controls that locked in the target selections that would prevent the Talorians from running and fighting, and his other came down on the phasers' firing control, and he unleashed their fury on the targets specified by Commodore Perry. However, he realized, he would not be particularly broken up if it turned out their ship was a lot more fragile than he had expected.

[ Princess Orya - Dies Irae, Talorian Space] Orya knew that she didn't need to be the one to issue orders so as R'Tesh did what she was best at, the Princess sat down in the throne like chair towards the rear of the Bridge. Her anger slowly turning to a need for vengeance against the Bataq's as she wasn't about to let them ruin her plans to bring back the old ways and reclaim her rightful place as true leader of their home world. No they would pay dearly and so would those who had betrayed the warrior faction and led them here. So when they were informed that the Bataq ship had locked weapons onto them, Orya prepared to mock them as R'Tesh gave the order to fire and target their engines. " Excellent, let them try to stop us" she exclaimed, her voice laced with evil and glee. " Their organs will taste more sweeter, in the knowledge that we defeated them".However it appeared that the Bataq's knew how to fight as they returned fire and Orya was knocked from her throne and onto the floor. " End this now or forever be known as cowards" she roared as she attempted to get back up, despite bleeding from a newly acquired cut on her forehead. ********** [ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] Meanwhile on the Mac Bridge, Thea was focused on the viewscreen as Isaiah and Kaya worked on the probe, whilst they waited for a response from the other ship. However it seemed as though the Talorian's didn't want to use a more traditional method of communication as Niles informed them that they had their weapons locked onto the Mac. Either these people had a death wish or they were rather naive if they thought that they could take down a Sovereign class ship. Although it appeared that they were going to give it a try as Isaiah issued a warning and she saw the incoming torpedo as it impacted with the shields, jolting them all in the process. With the Commodore issuing orders and asking for a damage report, Thea luckily hadn't found herself knocked out this time as she looked around. " Is anyone hurt?".

"... What was that?" This conversation was turning out to, thankfully, be far less uncomfortable than Harmon had anticipated going into it. "They've got a justice system, we just don't have much information on how it functions," he stated. They certainly weren't some anarchist or libertarian society from the intelligence they did have on the Talorians, however information in most areas remained quite lacking. "They may not, so hopefully wecan catch them on our side of the border," he nodded in agreement.
As Charlie started to speak 'off the record' about her thoughts, a sign in Harmon's mind that perhaps their prior antagonism was starting to cool, they were shook by the unmistakable feeling of torpedo fire. It had been years since he'd felt it, and it was certainly not something he missed. Too many we lost in the war. In a way despite all the moral and ethical dilemmas of the Intelligence profession he viewed it as a far more useful field to dedicate his time to than Tactical. If he could stop a war, or shift the balance of power, he could save lives before they were even in danger. "It seems we're under attack," he said simply. "I sure hope they shot first, if we started this I'm going to give young Mister Niles a good bollocking. I want them alive," he started to step away from Charlie to head to the bridge before hesitating slightly. "I need to get back to the bridge," he started, "Are you alright? I figure you aren't shot at often?" It felt odd to leave her so abruptly now that they were under attack when he had started this conversation to make sure she was alright after the traumatic experience on the Star.

[Charlie Fox - Corridor, USS Mac]Charlie reached out to press her hand against the wall outside Sickbay; an instinctive movement that served only to steady her nerves. "Not in space..." She admitted to Harmon when he made the assumption she didn't get shot at often. Then her eyes flickered away from the ceiling and back to him, knowing that he needed to make a clean getaway. "I'm fine," she said, mostly meaning it. "I'm going to have a stiff drink, and then get to work. Provided we don't blow up."She might have grinned had she not been so unsure about what was going on on the ship. The vehicle of freedom became a coffin once shots were fired. "Go ahead, make sure we're not starting a war."
Tag: Matthew Harmon *** [ Princess Orya - Dies Irae, Talorian Space] Orya knew that she didn't need to be the one to issue orders so as R'Tesh did what she was best at, the Princess sat down in the throne like chair towards the rear of the Bridge. [Commander R'Tesh - Dies Irae, Talorian Space]"Head straight for them! Full imp-"R'Tesh's orders were cut short as she flew half-way across the bridge. She'd been on her feet and had no time to prepare herself for the impact of the Federation's weapons. Someone was going to lose their tongue for not using it in warning. She righted herself, her arm hanging at a very strange angle. The Commander channeled her pain into her orders. Once the Princess made her intention known, R'Tesh unleashed her own fury. "We have lost power to engines, Commander. Shields are down! Fires on... almost all decks. We still have weapons!""FIRE! EVERYTHING!" A crewman moved to comply. She stumbled back to the tactical station just as their great ship began to whine to a halt. "Helm! RAM THEM!"But Helm was gone, scurrying out of the door, abandoning the Bridge. "COWARD!" She screamed. Thea Baker , Mac bridge.
