[Commodore Calvin Perry - Bridge] Perry opened his mouth to respond to the helmsman's comment, but Quinn's warning came too quickly, then the ship shuddered. Helm! Evasive maneuvers! Lt. Niles, you may return fire. Target their engines and weapons and try not to destroy the ship.
Damage report! It hadn't felt like much more than a tap, but even a tap in a vulnerable area could be a problem later if they kept hitting it. Theoretically, the ablative hull armor should help prevent any such targeted attacks, but it would be foolish to make assumptions. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
[...] "Returning fire," he simply acknowledged, his voice hard and unforgiving, and emotionless save for an ice-cold edge of rage his training and discipline were barely keeping in check And so he did, striking the controls that locked in the target selections that would prevent the Talorians from running and fighting, and his other came down on the phasers' firing control, and he unleashed their fury on the targets specified by Commodore Perry. However, he realized, he would not be particularly broken up if it turned out their ship was a lot more fragile than he had expected. [ Princess Orya - Dies Irae, Talorian Space] Orya knew that she didn't need to be the one to issue orders so as R'Tesh did what she was best at, the Princess sat down in the throne like chair towards the rear of the Bridge. Her anger slowly turning to a need for vengeance against the Bataq's as she wasn't about to let them ruin her plans to bring back the old ways and reclaim her rightful place as true leader of their home world. No they would pay dearly and so would those who had betrayed the warrior faction and led them here. So when they were informed that the Bataq ship had locked weapons onto them, Orya prepared to mock them as R'Tesh gave the order to fire and target their engines. " Excellent, let them try to stop us" she exclaimed, her voice laced with evil and glee. " Their organs will taste more sweeter, in the knowledge that we defeated them".However it appeared that the Bataq's knew how to fight as they returned fire and Orya was knocked from her throne and onto the floor. " End this now or forever be known as cowards" she roared as she attempted to get back up, despite bleeding from a newly acquired cut on her forehead. ********** [ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] Meanwhile on the Mac Bridge, Thea was focused on the viewscreen as Isaiah and Kaya worked on the probe, whilst they waited for a response from the other ship. However it seemed as though the Talorian's didn't want to use a more traditional method of communication as Niles informed them that they had their weapons locked onto the Mac. Either these people had a death wish or they were rather naive if they thought that they could take down a Sovereign class ship. Although it appeared that they were going to give it a try as Isaiah issued a warning and she saw the incoming torpedo as it impacted with the shields, jolting them all in the process. With the Commodore issuing orders and asking for a damage report, Thea luckily hadn't found herself knocked out this time as she looked around. " Is anyone hurt?".[Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] Isaiah briefly looked around, doing his best to make certain that everyone in his immediate vicinity was all right. However, his attention didn't remain there long, as he returned it to his console. They had taken a hit once, there was no guarantee that the next wouldn't be worse. Hearing Thea's voice asking if everyone was all right was a comfort. At least she was fine. The order had been given to return fire, and that's exactly what Lieutenant Niles did. Isaiah's scans surveyed the strikes, as it seemed that their aim had been true. Quinn left the tactical report of the damages to the Dies Irae to Niles. He turned his attention to the probe that they had lunched. Thus far, telemetry was still holding. "At present, there aren't any signs of additional ships," Isaiah reported. "However, the probe hasn't reached it's final coordinates yet. Stand by." It was the best he could offer. Right now, he was only able to scan some 65-70% of the targeted region. Though, now that fire had been exchanged... the possibility that support would arrive for the Talorians may have increased.

However as someone with sense issued a damage report and how they still had engines, it felt like a small victory against whoever was in control on that behemoth of a ship. That was until R'Tesh gave the order to fire everything they had, hoping her precious ship would hold together but even if they failed now, she wasn't going to surrender preferring to die rather than be captured. " Yes let them suffer" she almost shouted as she stumbled into her throne, before the helm officer decided to abandon them. " I will punish you later !!!!!". With R'Tesh injured and Orya not faring any better, the Princess didn't dare trust anyone else and knew that she should be the one to ram the Bataq ship as a final act. " I see that I'll have do this myself and those who deserted us will be haunted forever with their cowardice" she declared as she forced herself to her feet. She may be swaying against the death throes of her disabled ship but once that determination and adrenaline took over, Orya seated herself as more of the bridge crew except the one at tactical followed the Helm officer, clearly not ready to sacrifice themselves with honour. " R'Tesh let us not forget this moment of final victory, you have served me well all these years" she said as she transferred all remaining power and attempted to ram the Mac even though it was a fools errand and unlikely to succeed.

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Bridge] Despite the damage to the Talorian ship, they seemed intent on a suicidal run. But the ship moved so slowly that it likely wouldn't even be able to breach the Mac's shields. Still... Get a tractor beam on them! Perry ordered. Start transporting the Talorians to our brig as soon as there's no danger of them ramming us.
Acknowledged, Mr. Quinn, Perry added in response to the science officer's report. Keep us updated on that.
Doctor, the commodore said finally, turning to Thea. Do you want to see if we can get anything out of them once they're aboard?

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Bridge ]The Mac shuddered under the Talorian fire; Kaya Som steadied herself before returning to her station. "No damage to Engineering systems," she called out to the Commodore. everything on her panel was still at fully functional, untouched green. Around her, senior officers managed the inexplicable attack and prepared to take aboard prisoners. Or was it a rescue now that the Talorian ship was intent on a collision course? Either way, revenge was presenting herself on a silver platter, nuance an apparent luxury. What a bloody mess. Tag Admin and bridge

Either way, revenge was presenting herself on a silver platter, nuance an apparent luxury. What a bloody mess. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
Under the Commodore's orders, the Mac moved through patterns to confuse the Talorian targeting while Lieutenant Niles aim unerringly found its targets and hammered at the much smaller ship. First her warp capability went, then her impulse drive and he was removing her weapons capability with ruthless abandon when her fire ceased, and the larger vessel came to rest. And then, something unthinkable happened. The Talorian ship changed course, under its thrusters no less, and came right at them. Was that... No, it couldn't be... yet there it was. "You've got to be joking," the young Lieutenant muttered from his station. "Sir, the Talorians are on a collision course with us. Under... thrusters. Time to impact... make that about forty minutes. Also, I'm reading a number of beacons spreading astern from the ship, looks like escape pods" His earlier thirst for revenge, at least temporarily slaked, was replaced with sheer incredulity. That they had refused the hail and turned to fight had been enough of a surprise, what with being outmassed by a factor for six or seven, and outgunned by an even larger margin when they decided to pick a fight with the Mac. But to try a ramming course at that kind of limited velocity? That was a bad joke if there ever was one so far as he was concerned. However, the order to get the ship into a tractor beam brought him back to the moment, and he responded crisply as he captured the feeble attempt into a tractor beam and stopped it dead in its tracks, bringing them to rest just inside transporter range. Though, with the violence coming to an end, his awareness expanded again and he could hear Petty Officer Som reporting the lack of damage, and Lieutenant Quinn stating that so far nothing had been detected by the probe they had launched. However, he could detect an undertone that there yet might be danger that would need responding to in no uncertain ways, and he slowly shook his head at Commander Baker when she inquired after his heatlh. The amount of fire they'd taken had been negligible, but he knew his own return fire had been devastating. So, while he maintained a weapons lock on them and aggressive active scans of the area in case other ships might come to assist the one they had disabled, ready to resume firing in any direction if required, he tapped his board. "Bridge to Transporter Room 1, start beaming the survivors of the Talorian ship directly to the Brig; Sickbay, medical teams to the Brig for possible hostile casualties."With those directives out, he turned his attention back to the Commodore. "Sir, should we start recovery operations for those lifeboats, or should we hail the Talorian government and let them handle it?"He knew his preference would be to let the locals handle those pods... though a part of him was screaming to request to use them for target practice, but he stepped on that before the notion could cross his lips... both out of discipline and out of a degree of shame at this feeling of vindictiveness that had washed over him.

[Primary L'Sho - Prae Sul, Flagship of the Talorian Armada, Tal II]"Primary, their probe approaches. We will be discovered momentarily."The Talorian male seated in the center throne was dressed in pristine white. Medals of shiny ores and chains of different lengths adorned his chest. The bare soles of his feet were flattened against the warm floor of their largest vessel, his long legs easily reaching from his elevated position. "Destroy it."There was no question and no sound other than the officer tapping on the teal-hued surface of his computer. He nodded sharply once the Federation instrument was confirmed demolished. "What is the status of the Dies Irae?"It would have been difficult for a younger Talorian male to remain so still and hidden for so long when a trespasser was firing upon his people. L'Sho was no longer that reactionary young man; he'd fought and schemed his way to the top, and now he was one of the most powerful Talorians in the history of their civilisation. "Her engines have been disabled, Primary. Armaments depleted. She is on a collision course, and the pods have been deployed. Telemetry suggests she will be engulfed in flames before reaching their destination.""We have waited long enough, do you not think?" He required no answer, and his men knew that. "Open communications to the USS Mac."At his officer's nod of confirmation, the man in the alabaster suit steepled his webbed fingers and spoke clearly. // "This is Primary L'Sho of the Prae Sul, flagship of the Talorian Armada. Federation vessel, you are trespassing and have attacked the transport carrying the last surviving member of our beloved royal family, unprovoked. You will cease immediately and leave this space, or you will experience the might of Talorian defense." \\ Twenty-four once-hidden ships turned their weapons on the sovereign-class starship.

[ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] With no one suffering any injuries and no reports of others being hurt during the surprise attack from the Talorian ship, Thea could rest a little easier as those on the Bridge gave updates and information. Of course nothing could of prepared them for the news that the other ship was intent on ramming the larger, stronger starship despite it being almost dead. Whoever was in charge over there, clearly had some kind of death wish or they were just desperate not to face justice, preferring to take the more cowardly way out. Although it did appear as though most of its crew had decided to abandon ship as Niles informed them of such, before Perry began to issue orders in order to bring this to an end. When the Commodore turned to her and asked if she wanted to be the one to try and get answers from them, she decided that it was worth a try and to have Harmon join her so he wasn't denied the chance of asking them questions. She was about to answer Perry once Niles had confirmed transport and requested Medical to treat any injuries and gave them a suggestion, when the unexpected happened. Considering that the government hadn't answered any of their hails this was definitely something that could turn very ugly very quickly as they were addressed by this Primary L'Sho, before twenty four ships appeared out of nowhere. Thea knew that they had to take this ultimatum seriously and didn't want to think about the political ramifications caused by this incident, if it wasn't resolved without the Mac being destroyed. " Commodore, we may have no choice but to hand the prisoners over and leave as I don't like our chances against 24 ships".

Acknowledged, Mr. Quinn, Perry added in response to the science officer's report. Keep us updated on that.
Doctor, the commodore said finally, turning to Thea. Do you want to see if we can get anything out of them once they're aboard?[ PO3 Kaya Som | Bridge ]The Mac shuddered under the Talorian fire; Kaya Som steadied herself before returning to her station.

[ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] The questions that she had asked in order to not only restore some calm but also as a reminder that they were still dealing with a potential enemy, were quickly answered as Isaiah spoke first. Listening to the issues that could hinder the conclusion of this investigation, before Sir Doug offered a solution that might circumvent and help them find out more information. Of course it would be down to Perry to give the go ahead for a modified probe as Niles then acknowledged her and informed that the other ship had raised shields. That wasn't a surprise especially if their arrival had been detected by the Talorian's and now it became a waiting game to see what would happen next. Although as they got within range of the other ship and Niles prepared to open a channel, the Doctor wondered if they would get a response or if they would be brave enough to try to run instead. Either way this was about to get a lot more tense as Perry then issued orders. When the Commodore then turned to her and said that there was no need to delay, Thea agreed with him. " Agreed, no point in delaying the inevitable and now we see if they're willing to talk or not".Now it was up to the Talorian's but at least the crew of the Mac was prepared to deal with them with whatever outcome they took. ********************* [ Princess Orya - Dies Irae] The euphoria of the ritual had completely disappeared as her anger boiled, her skin flushed with fury as R'Tesh acknowledged her presence and the others realised exactly what was at stake if they failed to comply. Of course she was tempted to unleash her anger and begin the cull of taking their tongues but she held back as R'Tesh delivered her own warning to those who dare to disobey. Following R'Tesh as she informed her what was going on and projected the information for her to see more clearly, though it did little to tame her fury. Although she did take a moment to look it over properly, not that she was afraid of the Bataq's and their fancy ship. The Dies Irae could certainly hold its own against such a beast and she wasn't afraid. So when R'Tesh stepped to one side to await her command, Orya considered their options. " Your Highness ... we're receiving a hail from the Starfleet ship".Orya glared at the underling, who had interrupted her thoughts but decided to allow the hail to be heard, taking great joy in listening to their request for them to respond. " We won't answer and prepare to engage them, they will soon regret that they tried to make us bow down to them and their ways".

His defense of so-called righteous anger and setting up a 'they shot first' excuse made Kaya feel insane. She looked around the bridge for someone else who shared her concern. Even Doctor Baker seemed in robotic step with Perry. The bridge was crewed with mannequins. She stared holes at the back of Niles's head until Perry directed her to help Quinn withe probe. She mumbled an affirmative and got up to join Quinn at his station. "Just convert one of the emitters to scatter incoming light or radiation in a crystalline pattern. And while the Commodore spoke to the Talorians, the young Lieutenant kept his eyes on his board. If the Talorians were going to blink, he would know. At first, there was no answer, but he did not think anything of it. Their communications protocols might need a moment to sync up with the Mac's. However, the Talorian ship's posture changed. The predatory vessel was coming about just as its weapons came online and its targeting sensors came alive and locked onto the Mac. It would seem that a peaceful resolution was going to be out of the question in the immediate... "Sir!" The Tactical officer's voice came like whipcrack from his station. "The Talorian ship is coming about, they have powered weapons, and they have a lock on us."In the face of that immediate threat, he returned their weapons lock in kind and matching their current displayed level of aggression. However, his hands still hovered over just over his firing controls, ready to enact any of the firing plans he had prepared at the drop of a hat, or just simply hammer them into scrap metal, or an expanding cloud of debris and plasma.

She said nothing about the reason she was there, or who was bankrolling her or exerting pressure on Command. He was correct that they'd want heads for this. "The Talorians might not want to hand over their people," she offered thoughtfully then in agreement with his musings, finger tapping the side of her chin. Even Isaiah had reservations about launching a probe. Truth be told, it could just as easily be seen as a sign of aggression. Still, orders were orders, and it didn't take long for Commodore Perry to assign Petty Officer Som to assist with the probe. "Aye, sir," Isaiah replied. At least they were going out of their way to avoid drawing the Talorians attention. "That's a pretty clever approach," Isaiah said softly to Kaya's suggestion. He lowered his voice just a bit to convey his own support to her point of view. "Hopefully, it'll keep things from escalating any further." His hands moved across his panel, pausing a moment so that Petty Officer Som could review his work. "Proble ready... and launching."The science officer's eyes turned to look at the trajectory of the probe, but was immediately captured by something else. Not an object moving away from the ship, but coming towards the Mac. "Incoming!" he announced, but with little warning as the ship jolted with a slight rumble. So much for avoiding a conflict.

It was a name from Quinn's past that seemed all so relevant in the moment. It had been a school yard scuffle that came to a halt when Joey's dad and three older brothers separated the pair of them. Leaving Joey with a bloody nose, Isaiah was given the option to walk away, and bury the hatchet between himself and Joey the and there. It was obvious that if he had made any other choice, well... the odds would have been easily out of Isaiah's favor. That was the exact sort of situation they were facing now. "The probe has been destroyed," Isaiah announced. His eyes were glued to his screen as he discerned the origin of the probe's destruction. At first it was a single ship joining the fray, but it multiplied many times over until it was apparent that they were indeed facing an armada. Twenty-four ships emerged from the very area that Isaiah had sought to search. It was just like walking right into a briar patch. "Commodore...."Isaiah had begun to speak, but it was Thea that had voiced her concerns about staring down against two dozen Talorian ships. It sounded as if she had gotten through to him when he went on to respond to the hail from the Talorian flagship, as it asked them to leave their space. Commodore Perry tried to solicit some sort of justice, but in Quinn's opinion that plea would fall on deaf ears. It had been mentioned that a royal had been aboard that ship. The last surviving royal to be exact. It was doubtful that their monarch would face any actual crimes. At best, a diplomat or some mutally agreed upon mediator may be able to negotiate some sort of reparations. There was no way their monarch would see any sort of prison. Quinn only hoped that Perry was willing to accept that, file the report to his superiors and allow them to decide how to best proceed from there. It was over. The mystery of the Jupiter Star had been found. One could even argue that the Talorians had gotten a bloodied nose. Now, the smart thing to do was walk away, not pick a fight they couldn't win. The science officer took a deep breath as he awaited Commodore Perry's final orders, though he somehow felt those orders would be tied to how Primary L'Sho would ultimately reply.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Corridor --> Bridge]"Ah, I could use with a drink about now," he said smiling to Charlie before quickly hurrying off to the bridge.
He made it to the bridge just as the Talorian ship attempted its ram. By the time he made it to the three centre chairs, the armada appeared and made its threats. It was true that the Mac on it's own would have no chance, however if they chose to destroy the Mac it would start a war with the Federation which they would be sure to leave. As the Commodore attempted to plead with Primary L'Sho, Harmon quickly drafted and emergency communique to Starfleet.
Priority One: USS Mac -> 17th Fleet Headquarters, Cait
Jupiter Star recovered. Crew massacred by Talorians. Organs harvested. Suspect pursed, refused hails, fired on Mac. Talorian armada (24 vessels) appeared, threatened Mac. Primary L'Sho of Prae Sul, flagship of the Talorian Armada demanded we retreat, claims we attacked unprovoked. Claims attacking vessel is transport carrying last member of the Talorian royal family. Has threatened Mac. Request reinforcements. Hopefully Starfleet would get the message and even if the Mac was destroyed they would have at least some pieces of the puzzle. He did call for reinforcements however he doubted any could arrive in time realistically. The Commodore attempted to negotiate but Harmon was quickly disappointed at how easily he capitulated and rolled over. Allow them to take the attackers into custody? That is preposterous and would rob the Star of justice. "Mr Niles, have we managed to beam anyone aboard yet?""Primary L'Sho," he said speaking up, concerned that the Commodore's tepid attitude would get them nowhere. Fuck the chain of command. There's no time. "This vessel has attacked and murdered Federation civilians. I have informed Starfleet of this fact and have also made Starfleet Command aware of the threats you have made against us. Any attack upon this vessel will constitute an act of war. The Federation has the right to arrest and try the crew of the vessel that has attacked us and other Federation citizens under both Federation and intergalactic law. The Talorian state may lobby on their behalf, may assist with their defence, present evidence, and negotiate with our government, however if you attempt to stand in the way of justice and the legal system then you will face consequences. A brutal crime has been committed. It is in neither of our interests to start a war, a war which you and I both know you cannot win."

[Primary L'Sho - Prae Sul, Flagship of the Talorian Armada, Tal II]L'Sho listened to Commodore Perry's requests with a detached air, but he did give them some credence. This was, after all, the beginning of a negotiation. Then, a second voice, with no introduction or deference to anyone, negated the initial overtures. Surprise was the first expression L'Sho had shown that day. // "I see your people's reputation for arrogance is not exaggerated, Commodore Perry of the USS Mac. Please accept my sincere regrets, but I must disappoint you. The Federation has no jurisdiction here. It is you who must lobby us for the right of extradition." Amusement was leaking into L'Sho's voice, and titters from his men would be heard over the channel. "You enter our space without invitation or even notice, you levy accusations at our beloved Princess, based only on findings that the Dies Irae happened to briefly share the same space as one of your freighters, and then attempt to destroy her after she had fired off a single torpedo as a warning shot. I will be happy to inform your fleet of your inability to follow process, of your attempt to assassinate a member of our royal family, and your threats of war." // With steel again returned to his voice, he addressed his crew. "Bring us out of the dark and into the playing field proper. Slow and steady." L'Sho would have liked nothing more than to get rid of Orya and her deranged followers, but handing her over alive to the Federation was not an option. // "USS Mac, I strongly suggest you leave. Return only when you've done your due diligence. Primary L'Sho out." //

Epilogue Whilst Primary L'Sho's response may not of been the one that Perry or the crew had hoped for, especially with them being so close in bringing the killers to justice. It soon became obvious that if they didn't acquiesce to the Talorian's request to use the proper channels and leave their system it would turn an already volatile situation into something that could ruin any chance of negotiations between the Talorian's and the Federation. Not to mention the potential fallout from Command as a result of their actions in this star system if they chose to ignore it and proceed in taking Orya, R'Tesh and S'ong with them. So a decision was quickly made to leave the remaining crew of the Dies Irae on the stricken vessel so as not to antagonise the Talorian Armada further, before the Mac turned and warped out of the system. Perry naturally made contact with Starfleet to update them and request that the extradition process begin, whilst the Mac set a course to complete the Jupiter Star's mission. Unbeknown to the crew, the moment that the Mac left, the Dies Irae succumbed to the damage sustained in the attack and began to combust from within. The ensuing explosion was almost mesmerising to watch as the Prae Sul and the rest of the fleet made no effort to rescue the Princess or her remaining crew and simply let it burn. La Fin
