[ P03 Kaya Som | Engineering ]Kaya contentedly munched on her cheese. No better way to befriend Kaya Som than to provide cheese; she'd give that to humans, they knew how to handle dairy. And there was nothing like a Lieutenant Commander at your station to act as a shield from supervisors who'd otherwise take idle chatter to task. Clearly the young enlisted weren't the only ones freely speculating at the changes in command - that was both reassuring and not reassuring. Who was running this thing if the All-Knowing Sir Doug and Commander Spy were in the dark. (The latter could just as easily be faking it, she supposed.) She tossed the still peeking Jin an eyebrow - she was missing out. So Sir Doug was endearing himself, but so was Harmon in a sense. He looked wretched and obviously hungover, but he was being way less a prat than back on the station. And she appreciated PO far better than Ms. Amused, she sniffed at his sass about her take on the Mac. If he really wanted her opinion... "Dead end's a bit harsh. I'd call it ... arse end," she said, being bold again, mostly for Jin's eavesdropping. But seriously, "it's not that bad. Never a dull moment. Would kill for a bio-neural circuitry retrofit, though. Maybe if we ask the Commodore real nice..." Ask her on another day and her answer might have been more enthusiastic, but with what happened at the nebula, departure of Ellis, and Avi ghosting her, she wasn't in the best of spirits about her situation. Gossip was the only thing sustaining her. Dugris Zaman Matthew Harmon [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Engineering]Sir Doug had come to the belief that this was a dead-end posting. He reckoned Parsinp was sent here as pre-retirement, and Eastman (whether she was aware of it or not) fit that bill too by human standards. Heck, his own assignment here, before that "mutually agreed-upon" honorable discharge, could be seen in the same light. Ellis wasn't old, but she was quite young for a Captain, and she was already out of here. He also picked up on the "unknown unknowns" comment, having been around when the phrase was originated. "This? Aldebaran Whiskey," he told Harmon, of the flask. "A gift, from a secret admirer."The secret admirer was Sir Doug's publisher, pleased with the ancient man's latest manuscript. However, Doug didn't need to go around saying that. "As for bio-neural circuitry, there's talk in the grapevine about a moratorium on retrofits. Turns out, the things can get sick[fn]Source: MemA[/fn], like you and I, from some of the same bacteria. And, what's more, turns out circuits handle the common cold about as well as a human male does[fn]See article: Man-Flu[/fn]," Doug divulged on the technical side, before realizing that there was a human male among them. "No offense." [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Engineering]"Arse end..." Harmon smiled and nodded in agreement at Kaya's correction. "Well put."
Harmon wasn't sure if Doug was teasing him with the whisky, but he was certainly feeling thirsty with the mention of it. "Ah, I don't think I've ever had the pleasure. I've heard it's quite good though...and no offence taken. The man flu is not at all pleasant."
"I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Doctor Baker. I had worked with Captain Ellis, its a shame to lose her. How is it serving under the Doctor?" he inquired steering the conversation back towards his goals of uncovering gossip. "I must confess I feel like an outsider here and would be quite curious what scraps of interesting information you have on the crew, Doug...and you too PO, I know the lower decks always know more than officers seem to appreciate."

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Ready Room] The replicator produced Perry's drink, and he removed it and gave the doctor's order before turning to the desk with both drinks in hand. He paused in surprise to see that she'd sat in front of the desk, when she had every right to take the captain's seat. It threw him off, and when Perry went to deposit Thea's drink on the desk before heading around, he left his glass of blue tomato juice instead. Sitting in the seat behind the desk, Perry set down the other glass without noticing that he'd switched them and leaned back in the chair, folding his hands across his stomach and stretching his legs in front of him. Well, Comm, I mean, Doctor. Sorry, it'll just take me a little while to get used to that. His eyes searched Thea's face for a moment. I know this is not an easy situation for you or your crew. I was able to meet with Commander Eastman before we departed, but everything happened too quickly for you and I to chat at all.
The abrupt reassignment of Captain Ellis must have been difficult for everyone, and Starfleet assigning a flag officer in her place must be equally disturbing. I'm not here to upset the apple cart. I read the reports from when you all took over the station, and I know it hasn't been long enough to fully solve all the issues caused by the previous administration. I don't want to cause you all further difficulty. Though I am technically in command, I'd like to defer to you in most cases since you're more familiar with the crew and their capabilities.
So I'd like you to tell me what I can do for you. Perry shifted forward and folded his hands on the desk, trying not to stare too hard at the pretty, red-headed doctor.
Tag Thea Baker [Ready Room] There seemed to be some kind of awkward atmosphere developing within the ready room as the Commodore, paused after getting the drinks, before walking over to the desk with them. This was further proved when he then placed a glass with a unique bluish liquid in front of her then took the apple juice with him as he took the other seat. For a moment Thea wondered if she should mention that there had been a mix up but then thought better of it as the last thing she wanted was to cause any embarrassment. However despite receiving the wrong drink and the way he acted since leaving the bridge, Thea remained professional and hoped this wouldn't be a recurring issue. Leaving the drink for now, Thea listened as Perry began to speak, offering a reassuring smile when he apologised about how it would take him a little while to get used to calling her Doctor, before he continued. Appreciating that he had taken notice of the fact that this sudden change hadn't been easy and understood why he hadn't until this point been able to talk to her. As much as she knew about how quickly things could change in the fleet, it was actually nice to hear it from a Flag Officer as opposed to just being left to their own devices and to just accept what had happened without any acknowledgement from the higher ups. It certainly made a refreshing change and in some ways it made her respect Perry a little more, that he had actually taken the time to learn as much as he could about Captain Ellis, how it affected the crew, the issues they were still facing as they strove to make Front Ear the best it could be and just as importantly how he didn't want to upset or cause any further difficulty. Although she was a little surprised at what he said next about referring to her in most cases, owing to the fact that she knew the crew more, despite him being technically in command. It took Thea a moment to process that and what that would mean going forward. Finally after a few moments, Thea looked at Perry as she answered him. " I appreciate that you've took the time to understand our situation and what it means to us all, Commodore as well your intentions to ensure that the crew remains as it is with morale and such. I also appreciate the confidence that you have in me, to keep things as routine as they always have been".When he then asked if there was anything he could do for her, Thea thought about it for a couple of seconds, perhaps longer as she noticed him trying not to stare. Putting it down to nerves and nothing more, Thea then responded. " I don't think there is, Commodore, other than for you to get to know the crew and that I hope to continue alternating my time between the Bridge and Sickbay".
tag Admin[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Ready Room] Perry smiled, pleased that that they seemed to be on the same page as far as working together. Of course, he said. You set your schedule for as much time as you want in either place. I'll take shifts on the bridge around yours. I think it would be best for you and I to take, not opposite shifts, but at least different shifts so that we have a more senior officer on the bridge the majority of the time. I'll spend a lot of time familiarizing myself with the crew, maybe dropping in on the different departments. You've got a lot of young, untried officers that I'd like to see get some more experience. The commodore sat up straight and turned to the computer on the desk, pulling up a file that had caught his attention earlier. Can you tell me about this...Matthew Harmon who was just promoted to L-C-D-R? While he stared at the screen, Perry reached for his glass. He was about to take a sip of his juice when he realized it was the wrong color. He stared at it with a puzzled look on his face for a second before glancing across the desk and realizing that his tomato juice was sitting in front of Thea. With a barely visible flush, he set the glass down and pushed it gently across the surface and snagged his own, quickly taking a sip to cover his embarrassment. He was glad that the doctor seemed to be very discreet, or at least very kind, despite his awkwardness.

Tag Thea Baker [Ready Room] If she was being honest with herself, Thea didn't know how Perry would react to what she had said about continuing to divide her time between Sickbay her first love and the Bridge. As much as she enjoyed her bridge shift whilst having the advantage of being around Isaiah at the same time and the responsibility bestowed upon her, her heart did lie in the department several decks away, even with Kece Lunn looking after things when she wasn't there. Then there was his command style to consider, despite what he had said so far, but as he smiled and answered her, Thea smiled back, internally relieved. It appeared that she would have a similar working relationship to the one that she had thoroughly enjoyed with Captain Ellis and if he wanted to work different shifts to accommodate not only her shifts in Sickbay but also to ensure that there was a more senior officer present majority of the time, then she could agree to that. Thea also approved of how he had taken her advice to get to know the crew and how he wanted to approach that and give people the chance to gain more experience. In fact that was something that her and Captain Ellis had wanted as well and were striving to do. " That works for me Commodore and I appreciate being able to continue working between the two, I also agree with giving some of our younger officers more experience which is something that myself and Captain Ellis were very keen to support whenever we set out from Front Ear".As the conversation continued and the subject of the newly promoted Harmon came up, Thea had to be honest with Perry as the Commodore suddenly realised his mistake regarding the drinks and quickly switched them back. Deciding not to draw attention to it, Thea carried on as though nothing happened, taking a sip of the correct drink as she looked at Perry. " Not a lot if I'm being honest, this is the first time that I've been on assignment with the Commander, as he's usually station bound but I'm not surprised that Intelligence have taken an interest in what's going on out here".

[Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] "The absence of evidence isn't the lack of evidence Isaiah mused mostly to himself. He watched the map as it populated with the evidence that Lieutenant Niles had input. There were dark areas on the map which marked areas that they had little to no data on. Quinn was still of the mind that perhaps it was areas like that which made for them to be possible areas where they could learn even more. He still wasn't content with the area that was left. Niles was right. There was still a great deal of area to sort through. They needed to trim it down even more. The tactical officer had suggested bringing Commander Harmon in on this. "We can bring it to the Commander's attention soon," Isaiah said. There were no guarantees that he would necessarily have information on those areas, but it couldn't hurt to ask. "I'd like to try one more thing first." It wasn't anything that would hinder what the commander could contribute. If anything, it was additional information that could make things easier. Besides, he didn't want to bother the commander with this if he was already working on a project of his own. "Crewman Graham," Isaiah said turning towards the helmsman. "In grids 14 thru 26 on the map of this region, are there any spatial anomalies that would cause vessels to alter course, force immobile debris to drift, or naturally interfere with long range sensors?" It was always a possibility that something could have happened in one location, and was either naturally or purposefully relocated to another area. In either instance, it would still be another piece to this puzzle. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
As the map started showing more information with each bit of input coming from Lieutenant Quinn and himself, Niles was starting to see those areas that could only be looked at through brute-force search patterns. Even at high warp, that was a very large volume to have to search through, and unless something came through, that was what they would be reduced to: a brute force approach. And given the Mac was only one ship, that would take a while. Unless they could find ways to narrow down the search grid. "The whole area doesn't have nearly enough sensor coverage we can rely on, and I'm pretty leery of sending out queries to anything that's not Federation to narrow things down even more," added Joshua from his console. "Honestly, we could use a few more pairs of eyes. Maybe next search grid we could drop off any warp-capable small craft we have and launch some probes, send them towards likely locations where something might vanish, while we focus on the rest with our better sensor suite?"And, there was the matter of the Intelligence Officer. The man was abrasive, and it could feel like one was asking him to go whole parsecs out of his way when needing him to do his job, but what he had was a very special set of skills, skills that make him invaluable when trying to make heads or tails of large amounts of information. "As for Commander Harmon, I'm not sure if he knows any more than we do that's relevant to the task at hand about the volumes of space we need to search, but he's got a better eye for analysis than I do, and if we throw in your information as well, maybe he'll put things together in ways we can't; after all, he's been trained for that sort of things, and I know I haven't been."Of course, two JG's spitballing did not a command-level decision make, but if between the two of them they could come up with a course of action to pitch to Commander Baker or the Commodore, then that at least would be a start, along with any efforts to rule out specific areas where they can be reasonably sure there won't be that kind of weight of metal coming through undetected.

As far as Doug knew, the newly-minted Commander was doing it with Ensign Hudson. He could see the appeal, but in his own long experience, direct superior-subordinate dating like that didn't last. As for the ship getting destroyed... "Sometimes it seems like the ship nearly falls apart every few weeks," he pointed out. "Reminds me of an old riverboat I co-owned on Bajor, a very long time ago. Kept getting into freak accidents, that poor vessel. Lost me my whole investment."He took another sip. "As for Quinn, I'd say he's a smart one. Doesn't strike me as being too self-destructive, unlike some human scientists I've known. Take Tesla, for example," the ancient man added. Doug's acquaintance with Nikola Tesla was very limited, and nothing to be proud of, but it was what it was.

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Ready Room] Perry smiled, pleased that that they seemed to be on the same page as far as working together.
" Not a lot if I'm being honest, this is the first time that I've been on assignment with the Commander, as he's usually station bound but I'm not surprised that Intelligence have taken an interest in what's going on out here".
tag Admin[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Ready Room] Hmm, Perry murmured at Thea's reply, taking another sip of his tomato juice before steepling his hands again. Intelligence-types are an interesting bunch. Have a penchant for being lone wolves. And he mainly stays on the station? Guess that makes sense, too. I think I'll go track him down when we're finished and have a chat.
Before you head back to the big chair, can you give me your impressions of this mission and how it relates to the last missing ship? I've read the reports, of course. So many reports, but I'd like to hear it again.Perry found that he was able to relax if he focused on the crew and their mission.

[ P03 Kaya Som | Engineering ]Sir Doug's sage evaluation had caused Kaya yet another self-aware look of glee. He was so weird and she loved it. "Boring? Really?" She'd never had bridge duty. It wasn't her greatest ambition. She'd heard there was a lot of sitting around waiting for something to happen and having command over your shoulder, but if something did happen? Seemed far from boring. "I heard the mission's search and rescue, that another ship's gone missing." First the Orunmila and now Jupiter Star. If the details had trickled down correctly. So far, everything was routine for Engineering. "Last time we had a lead it tore this ship apart." Back at the nebula. People had died, but that was no secret. [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Engineering]Sir Doug thought it was very droll indeed to hear Matt Harmon talk about relationships within the ranks. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Engineering]"Bridge duty is a lot of sitting around looking at a single screen. Occasionally something happens, most of the time it turns out to be insignificant," he explained to Kaya. "When something does happen it can be very exciting, but that's only an extremely small part of bridge duty most of the time." Besides, Harmon was used to his freedom, investigating what he wanted how he wanted. Bridge duty was comparatively stifling for him. "Besides, I enjoy the freedom my usual duties allow. Much more interesting that staring a one or two screens for hours on end. You should try it some time," he joked. Or at least, it was framed as a joke. He wanted to see how she'd respond, wondered if she might be someone he could use in the future should her skills be needed. "Search and rescue is the mission, yes. This bit of space is usually quiet so for several ships to go missing in such a short period of time, either something suspicious is going on or its quite the coincidence. And my line of experience has taught me there's no such thing as a coincidence."Tesla. It was easy to forget just how venerable Doug actually was. "I'm glad there's some smart officers here. Given this posting...this arse end of nowhere posting it's not exactly the choice of most competent officers," he said. "Lieutenant Niles seems like he's going somewhere. Ambitious, but can use quite a bit more confidence in himself if he wants to continue to rise. He was quite helpful in resolving that incident on the station last month, though I have yet to observe him much beyond that.

Tag Thea Baker [Ready Room] Whilst Thea had been curious as to whether Harmon's presence on the Mac was for more than the official reason, the Doctor couldn't fault Perry's assessment of Intelligence in general. Okay she might not have spoken to Harmon yet or gotten the chance to get to know him, other than viewing his record but it would certainly be interesting to have him along for this mission and see how the crew would react to him and vice versa. Although Perry seemed to have a point as to why Harmon preferred to stay on Front Ear, before he decided that he would track him down and have a chat once they were done. " I must admit I haven't been around anyone from Intelligence until now but it'll be interesting for sure, having him on board and it wouldn't hurt for you to get to know more about him .. away from the bridge".When talk then turned to the mission and Thea was asked to give him her impression, especially as to how it related to the Orumila. Thea understood why he had preferred to ask rather than just rely on the many reports that had surfaced lately. Deciding to be both frank and honest with the Commodore as she took another sip of her drink. " I'll be honest, part of me is wondering what could be behind the disappearances as it does look like more than just a simple coincidence that another ship goes missing in this area of space. Then there's how it will affect the crew as our last two missions since we were made aware of the first disappearance, as the Mac has been heavily damaged and on both occasions we've lost people".Thea paused for a moment to collect her thoughts then continued. " I don't know if there's more to this quadrant that we don't know or I'm really hoping that this time, we do find the Jupiter Star, that it's an easy fix and we can send her back on her way ... but until we do we just keep on doing our best, cover all of the search area without having to give up".

[Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] Isaiah listened as Niles expressed his opinions while working from his station. "Acutally, I share your concerns, Mr. Niles. The last thing we want to do is compromise Federation assets by posing queries to unsanctioned parties. As for more eyes, that's something we can take care of." Isaiah moved back towards the Science II station and pressed a few buttons. "Feel free to page, Commander Harmon to see if he believes he has anything further to contribute." It only made sense to make use of every resource they had at their disposal. He presumed that Harmon would have already contributed everything he could to the search pre-mission, but having no prior association with the man, he couldn't really gauge how forthcoming he had been. Some Intelligence officers were very stingy with what they shared. =/\= "Quinn to Astrometrics. I've just sent you a series of coordinates. Concentrate long range scans on those areas, heavy concentration full battery of scans. Be sure to triangulate imaging with Mac and at two other probes we have in the region. Send all findings to my station here on the Bridge and stand prepared to receive additional telemetry." =/\= He continued to hover in front of the display, occasionally tapping at the console. "It may seem redundant by our standards, but some cultures such as the Bynars or even the Tholians implore such a method yielding even more detailed scans due to having a multi-vector perspective."

tag Admin[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Ready Room --> Engineering] Perry nodded at Thea's assessment and sighed heavily. Let's try our damnedest to keep this crew safe, he said seriously. With another swallow of his tomato juice, the commodore rose and said, Doctor, thank you for your time and candor. I hope that we'll work very well together moving forward. I'll leave the bridge in your capable hands and go seek out our intelligence officer. He gestured politely for Thea to precede him out the door and peeled off to the turbolift. Computer, what is the location of Lt. Commander Harmon?Lt. Commander Harmon is in main engineering.Deck 15, he ordered the 'lift. As he was carried down through the ship, Perry took a moment to lean against the side of the turbolift and heave a massive sigh. That had gone even better than he'd expected, despite his nerves. Dr. Baker was obviously a compassionate woman. He spun the ring on his finger again, straightening as the 'lift slowed. Perry strode into engineering, peering around for the tall, dark-haired Harmon. He noticed the grey-on-grey of his tunic huddled with several other people around a console, including someone who wasn't in a uniform. Lt. Commander Harmon? Perry asked, approaching the group.

[ LT (JG)Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]Listening to the slightly senior Lieutenant, Niles nodded. "I'll give him a call as soon as I have at least a worthwhile amount of raw data to hand over to him," he replied. Harmon was... somewhat prickly and the last thing the recently-minted JG wanted was to find himself on the receiving end of the Intelligence Officer's displeasure. And, besides, if there was stuff he could rule out himself, then it might make his workload easier. However, when Quinn spoke of multiple points of view, and how they were apparently considered a redundant or antiquated concept, the Tactical officer smiled. "Not for Tactical purposes. You can't generate, say, a fix on a communication with just one bearing. You need at least a two-bearing cross to get a general area, three for a decent degree of certainty, and the more you can get, the better your location gets. Even if they're squawking their location, like a distress call, we have to verify where it's coming from. If the message and the fix don't line up, either they've been drifting or their navigation system's taken a hit or even an honest mistake. Or if we just make for the coordinates fat and happy, we could wander right into an ambush; I'm given to understand that's a favourite trick for pirates, too."
