[ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
As the map started showing more information with each bit of input coming from Lieutenant Quinn and himself, Niles was starting to see those areas that could only be looked at through brute-force search patterns. Even at high warp, that was a very large volume to have to search through, and unless something came through, that was what they would be reduced to: a brute force approach. And given the Mac was only one ship, that would take a while. Unless they could find ways to narrow down the search grid. "The whole area doesn't have nearly enough sensor coverage we can rely on, and I'm pretty leery of sending out queries to anything that's not Federation to narrow things down even more," added Joshua from his console. "Honestly, we could use a few more pairs of eyes. Maybe next search grid we could drop off any warp-capable small craft we have and launch some probes, send them towards likely locations where something might vanish, while we focus on the rest with our better sensor suite?"And, there was the matter of the Intelligence Officer. The man was abrasive, and it could feel like one was asking him to go whole parsecs out of his way when needing him to do his job, but what he had was a very special set of skills, skills that make him invaluable when trying to make heads or tails of large amounts of information. "As for Commander Harmon, I'm not sure if he knows any more than we do that's relevant to the task at hand about the volumes of space we need to search, but he's got a better eye for analysis than I do, and if we throw in your information as well, maybe he'll put things together in ways we can't; after all, he's been trained for that sort of things, and I know I haven't been."Of course, two JG's spitballing did not a command-level decision make, but if between the two of them they could come up with a course of action to pitch to Commander Baker or the Commodore, then that at least would be a start, along with any efforts to rule out specific areas where they can be reasonably sure there won't be that kind of weight of metal coming through undetected. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] Isaiah listened as Niles expressed his opinions while working from his station. "Acutally, I share your concerns, Mr. Niles. The last thing we want to do is compromise Federation assets by posing queries to unsanctioned parties. As for more eyes, that's something we can take care of." Isaiah moved back towards the Science II station and pressed a few buttons. "Feel free to page, Commander Harmon to see if he believes he has anything further to contribute." It only made sense to make use of every resource they had at their disposal. He presumed that Harmon would have already contributed everything he could to the search pre-mission, but having no prior association with the man, he couldn't really gauge how forthcoming he had been. Some Intelligence officers were very stingy with what they shared. =/\= "Quinn to Astrometrics. I've just sent you a series of coordinates. Concentrate long range scans on those areas, heavy concentration full battery of scans. Be sure to triangulate imaging with Mac and at two other probes we have in the region. Send all findings to my station here on the Bridge and stand prepared to receive additional telemetry." =/\= He continued to hover in front of the display, occasionally tapping at the console. "It may seem redundant by our standards, but some cultures such as the Bynars or even the Tholians implore such a method yielding even more detailed scans due to having a multi-vector perspective."
Tag: Joshua Niles, Alex GrahamSoft: Thea Baker, Admin (Calvin Perry), Matthew Harmon[USS MAC-bridge] ”Maybe it would be a good idea to have another set of eyes look at it.” However after listening to what Lieutenant junior grade Quinn said it certainly put some things into perspective for him. It might not be good if some metal came through undetected. Having detailed scans no matter how it is done is important if the crew was going to get a good idea of what might be out there. He wondered if there was a way that they could get a detailed scan so that they could narrow down what they should be looking for in space. Tag: Isaiah Quinn

[Ready Room ----> Bridge] The nod and sigh from the Commodore, was just a sign as to how seriously he had taken what Thea had told him and was glad for the opportunity to be honest with him. So when he spoke, Thea was equally determined to keep everyone safe, before Perry thanked her and mentioned that he would leave the Bridge in her capable hands, whilst he sought out Harmon. " We will Commodore and not a problem at all, thank you for allowing me to be so candid about this and understood".With Perry then gesturing for her to leave the Ready Room first, Thea nodded and smiled, then got up and walked to the exit. Once the door opened and she parted ways with the Commodore, Thea took a moment to appreciate the hard work that was still continuing as she overheard Isaiah and Niles. It also seemed that Graham was joining in too as she walked back down to the command area and the centre seat. " Report, what have you come up with so far?" she enquired, keen to get back to the search for the Jupiter Star now that she gotten over the awkwardness of her first meeting with the Commodore, which had gone better than she had first thought.

Harmon noted Kaya's response, he took it as a possible sign she might in future be interested in working for him. Good. Then the Commodore showed up, smiled slightly as he watched Kaya awkwardly attempt to play it cool, before rolling his eyes in frustration at being pulled away before turning from Kaya to face the Commodore. "Commodore Perry. How can I help you?" he asked. Given the Commodore arrived alone and called for Harmon by name, he assumed he was her to talk to him. Harmon was somewhat surprised he made the effort of coming all the way down here rather than simply summoning him.

[ LT (JG)Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]Listening to the slightly senior Lieutenant, Niles nodded. "I'll give him a call as soon as I have at least a worthwhile amount of raw data to hand over to him," he replied. Harmon was... somewhat prickly and the last thing the recently-minted JG wanted was to find himself on the receiving end of the Intelligence Officer's displeasure. And, besides, if there was stuff he could rule out himself, then it might make his workload easier. However, when Quinn spoke of multiple points of view, and how they were apparently considered a redundant or antiquated concept, the Tactical officer smiled. "Not for Tactical purposes. You can't generate, say, a fix on a communication with just one bearing. You need at least a two-bearing cross to get a general area, three for a decent degree of certainty, and the more you can get, the better your location gets. Even if they're squawking their location, like a distress call, we have to verify where it's coming from. If the message and the fix don't line up, either they've been drifting or their navigation system's taken a hit or even an honest mistake. Or if we just make for the coordinates fat and happy, we could wander right into an ambush; I'm given to understand that's a favourite trick for pirates, too." [USS MAC-bridge] ”Maybe it would be a good idea to have another set of eyes look at it.” However after listening to what Lieutenant junior grade Quinn said it certainly put some things into perspective for him. It might not be good if some metal came through undetected. Having detailed scans no matter how it is done is important if the crew was going to get a good idea of what might be out there. He wondered if there was a way that they could get a detailed scan so that they could narrow down what they should be looking for in space. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] Isaiah nodded as Lt. Niles explained how triangulation was used tactically. It was actually the exact motif that Isaiah was hoping to empmloy. "You're right," Isaiah said. "I concur, its tactical applications are well-documented. However, our sensor technology has typically progressed in terms of its sensitivity. In other words, we've tried to get the job done well with one sensor instead of several." Isaiah made a few modifications at the Science II station as he continued his explanation. "It's simply in league with the philosophy of working smarter and not harder."He examined the display and then turned his attention once again back towards Lt. Niles, even as Crewman Graham began to work on compiling the data he had asked for. "What certain other culture shave done is focused on collaboration to increase their sensitivity. That's what I'm looking to do. Typically, when we see scan a planet, we'll dedicate a single probe to do the task. And allow that one probe to perform multiple scans. What I'm suggesting is that we adopt the same techniques that you implore at tactical and triangulate our scans of specific areas."It was at that moment that both Commodore Perry and Doctor Baker emerged from the ready room. He took his leave from the Bridge as she remained on the bridge and asked for a report. Taking a deep breath, Isaiah began his explanation. "Well, we began by taking a second look at the map of our region," he stated. I believe that we've isolated several regions that may have a higher probability of offering us some answers." He was about to go on with his explanation when a chime sound from his station. He moved to his station and quickly examined the contents of the alert. His head slowly raised to look out at the rest of the bridge. "We've got something," Isaiah said softly. "The readings that I'm picking up... latent energy signatures, hull composition, propulsion emissions... they all appear to be a match for the Jupiter Star." Quinn's hands moved over his console before he looked up once more. "I have the coordinates."

Kaya quietly attempted to die with her eyes open. She clasped her hands behind her back, watching the strange, gracious, multi-pipped dance between the weird El-Aurian, polished uncomfortably handsome Commodore, and the station's most malcontent malcontent.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Engineering]
[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Main Engineering] Perry turned his attention to the young Trill non-com, taking a moment to greet each member of the group with a smile and a handshake before answering Harmon's question. Kaya Som, nice to meet you. I believe I saw you were promoted not long ago. Petty Officer, right? Congratulations.
Sir Doug, the commodore said with an amused grin. He liked what he'd read, so far, of Zaman's file. There was a lot more of it still to read. It's a pleasure. I look forward to having a chat sometime. I'd like to hear some first-hand historical accounts.
Commander Harmon, Perry said, finally turning to the intelligence officer. I'd just like to have a chat with you. I'm trying to acquaint myself with the crew. As the third highest ranking officer aboard, I thought I'd start with you. I understand the abrupt change in command was probably difficult for everyone. Perry paused to glance at the others to include them in his words. I'd just like a few minutes of your time, if you don't mind, Commander. The Commodore had heard of her routine, scheduled, a-smart-plant-could-do-it promotion! What? Why? Tarin Jin coughed somewhere behind her, more of a snort. Kaya covered Jin's cough with her own cough. "Right. Yes, sir. Thanks, that did occur." She felt Jin laughing at her. Kaya quietly attempted to die with her eyes open. She clasped her hands behind her back, watching the strange, gracious, multi-pipped dance between the weird El-Aurian, polished uncomfortably handsome Commodore, and the station's most malcontent malcontent. [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Engineering]Sir Doug was impressed. This man was thorough. Doug had met Androids that didn't have this kind of memory - two Androids, to be precise, in two separate parts of the galaxy. "You did your homework, Commodore," the ancient man joked. "Lucky for you, Matt Harmon does his homework as well."A couple of passages from Harmon's "burn book"[fn] Call of Duty[/fn] had wandered down to Doug, who anonymized the rumor before he passed it on through the grapevine. Doug noted the young Trill, clearly not in it right now. "PO, do you have a diagnostic to run?" he pitched.

Tag: Thea Baker , Joshua Niles , Alex Graham [USS MAC-bridge] “Would it be possible even though the energy signatures seemed to be a match for the Jupiter star to narrow it down to one location?” Alex was more focused on finding the Jupiter star. If the Commandore ever talk to him then he was going to talk to the Commandore. He was confused how multiple emissions seemed to match for the same star. Maybe there was data there that might clarify and back it up. He took a look at the data that he compiled and from the looks of it the data seemed to clear up any confusion that he had. It was not common for such senior officers to be so intimately aware of the junior enlisted personnel under them, especially on a ship this size. "I'm not sure how much of a part of the crew I really am, I don't often accompany the Mac," he told the Commodore, not really looking forwards to being dragged away for a chat with the brass. "But as you wish, I can spare a few minutes," he said. Of course he had plenty of time on his hands, which the Commodore may or may not have been aware of. Either way, he didn't particularly care. "Excuse me PO, Doug. I'll let you get back to your work," he said, noticing how uncomfortable Kaya seemed to be as well as Doug's attempt to hint at her to stop staring at the Commodore and get back to work. He followed the Commodore leaving the other two. Hopefully this conversation would be more illuminating than tedious, though he doubted it.

[ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
It was interesting enough to have this sort of conversation with the Science officer. Of course, cooperation between various departments was essential to mission success, and while this was a serious enough mission they were on, what with the stakes involved should the Jupiter Star not be found, the chance to discuss their points of view with regards to sensor utilization. Getting more eyes out to survey things was certainly a good way to do things, and Joshua could admit that it was something Starfleet really wasn't the best at, preferring to use single ships for tasks, and not deploying small craft to provide other proverbial pairs of eyes. He had been to reply when Commander Baker returned to the Bridge, asking for a report, and just as Quinn had given his, the Tactical officer was preempted from giving his own by a chime on the Science console, which was echoed on his own. They had found the Jupiter Star. Looking at his own readings, Niles worked his own board, and then he called out. "Confirmed. The range is long for Tactical sensors but it certainly looks like the Star. I'm seeing... looks like additional warp trails in the immediate vicinity, I can't confirm how many, or where they've gone. For all I can tell they're still here or they could be long gone. Recommend we go to Yellow Alert and raise shields before going for the intercept, and that we drop out of warp at least ten million kilometers short of the Star."That recent talk of ambushes and piracy was still on the young Lieutenant's mind, and between the disappearance of that freighter and the appearance of warp trails in her immediate vicinity, he would advise caution... and to be ready to deal with danger of their own. Besides, at full impulse ten million kilometers was just a shade under two and a quarter minutes' travel time, not much to worry about, and it was better than three times torpedo range from rest, plenty of time and space to maneuver should they be heading into real trouble. "Mister Quinn, can your sensors see if there's any discrepancies between the weight of metal you've identified as the Star and her mass according to our records and her manifest?"Oh yes, he would be ready, and if there was much less mass than was expected out there, it could mean one of two things: severe damage, or her cargo was taken. Or both.

[Bridge] Thea got the answers to her question within seconds of her arriving on the bridge, a testament to how well the crew responded given the situation at hand. Not that she had wanted to interrupt the inner workings of their conversation but there was a renewed sense of determination that this mission wouldn't fail or hinder them, regardless of their previous efforts in this sector of space. There was a look towards Isaiah as he explained what they had moved onto since she had left for her meeting with the Commodore, impressed with what had been done until an alert forced him to pause. However it was for a good reason as the scientist and her boyfriend brought them the kind of news that they had been waiting for, especially when Isaiah then confirmed what it might be and that he had the coordinates. Her smile was obvious as she acknowledged him, " Excellent work both of you" she said to also include Joshua, then added. " Send the coordinates to Mr Graham immediately".That was when the helm officer also spoke up to possibly query what had been found and looked towards the Petty Officer, appreciating his attempt to join in with the conversation. " With the coordinates you'll get from Mr Quinn, that should pinpoint it's location, assuming it definitely is our missing Freighter".Although that was quickly answered for her as Niles confirmed that according to tactical scans that it looked the Star, before mentioning the possible presence of additional warp trails and made a recommendation on their next steps. It definitely had merit especially since they didn't know whether these other ships were still there or not, plus they didn't know what kind of trouble they were going to encounter. " Mr Quinn, Mr Niles continue your scans, Mr Graham get us there asap and bring us out of warp at Mr Niles's recommendation ... by the way good call with that Mr Niles and also take us to yellow alert".Sitting back in the centre seat, Thea decided to bring the Commodore up to date with what they had found. =/\= Baker to Commodore Perry, we've found the Jupiter Star and currently en-route to her location, will inform you once we arrive, Baker out =/\=" Let's go find our missing Freighter, engage".*************************** The journey wouldn't take long and when the Mac dropped out of warp, they would find the Jupiter Star alone, adrift and apparently lifeless.

The young Trill did seem to be staring at him for some reason, but he didn't want to embarrass her by noticing. Lots of that going around, he recalled. Great, the commodore said when Harmon agreed to speak with him. With another nod at the others, he started to move away. If you need to be somewhere, I can walk with you. [ Lt Laurel Andrews - Security Office, Deck 9] Aside from the drills that had been currently scheduled by S'Riia, things had been relatively quiet for the rest of the department. Although that hadn't stopped Laurel from keeping up to date with the more practical side of Sec/Tac. So she had taken the time to go through the rosters and update personnel changes, promotion requests and all other important paperwork. However whilst she worked, the Security Chief for this mission couldn't help but think about the Jupiter Star and the potential mystery surrounding her disappearance. Laurel probably wasn't the only one to think that something wasn't quite right about all of this, but until they found her, all they had were questions and very little else. Although it didn't hurt to be prepared for such an eventuality and get her department ready for when that happened. Besides she didn't want the department to look sloppy or incapable especially with Commander Harmon being onboard, not that she had anything against Intelligence, but at the same time, didn't want him to think that she couldn't organise her team properly. So after checking who was currently on bridge rotation, Laurel allowed a small smile to surface upon seeing Niles's name and returned to her preparations.
