The Commodore had heard of her routine, scheduled, a-smart-plant-could-do-it promotion! What? Why? Tarin Jin coughed somewhere behind her, more of a snort. Kaya covered Jin's cough with her own cough. "Right. Yes, sir. Thanks, that did occur." She felt Jin laughing at her. Kaya quietly attempted to die with her eyes open. She clasped her hands behind her back, watching the strange, gracious, multi-pipped dance between the weird El-Aurian, polished uncomfortably handsome Commodore, and the station's most malcontent malcontent. [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Engineering]Sir Doug was impressed. This man was thorough. Doug had met Androids that didn't have this kind of memory - two Androids, to be precise, in two separate parts of the galaxy. "You did your homework, Commodore," the ancient man joked. "Lucky for you, Matt Harmon does his homework as well."A couple of passages from Harmon's "burn book"[fn] Call of Duty[/fn] had wandered down to Doug, who anonymized the rumor before he passed it on through the grapevine. Doug noted the young Trill, clearly not in it right now. "PO, do you have a diagnostic to run?" he pitched.
Tag Matthew Harmon , Admin , Kaya Som [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Engineering]The Commodore appeared to be well informed. He was surprised in particular to find that he was aware of Kaya's existence let alone the details of her promotion. It was not common for such senior officers to be so intimately aware of the junior enlisted personnel under them, especially on a ship this size. "I'm not sure how much of a part of the crew I really am, I don't often accompany the Mac," he told the Commodore, not really looking forwards to being dragged away for a chat with the brass. "But as you wish, I can spare a few minutes," he said. Of course he had plenty of time on his hands, which the Commodore may or may not have been aware of. Either way, he didn't particularly care. "Excuse me PO, Doug. I'll let you get back to your work," he said, noticing how uncomfortable Kaya seemed to be as well as Doug's attempt to hint at her to stop staring at the Commodore and get back to work. He followed the Commodore leaving the other two. Hopefully this conversation would be more illuminating than tedious, though he doubted it.

[USS MAC-bridge] “Would it be possible even though the energy signatures seemed to be a match for the Jupiter star to narrow it down to one location?” Alex was more focused on finding the Jupiter star. If the Commandore ever talk to him then he was going to talk to the Commandore. He was confused how multiple emissions seemed to match for the same star. Maybe there was data there that might clarify and back it up. He took a look at the data that he compiled and from the looks of it the data seemed to clear up any confusion that he had. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
[...] Looking at his own readings, Niles worked his own board, and then he called out. "Confirmed. The range is long for Tactical sensors but it certainly looks like the Star. I'm seeing... looks like additional warp trails in the immediate vicinity, I can't confirm how many, or where they've gone. For all I can tell they're still here or they could be long gone. Recommend we go to Yellow Alert and raise shields before going for the intercept, and that we drop out of warp at least ten million kilometers short of the Star."That recent talk of ambushes and piracy was still on the young Lieutenant's mind, and between the disappearance of that freighter and the appearance of warp trails in her immediate vicinity, he would advise caution... and to be ready to deal with danger of their own. Besides, at full impulse ten million kilometers was just a shade under two and a quarter minutes' travel time, not much to worry about, and it was better than three times torpedo range from rest, plenty of time and space to maneuver should they be heading into real trouble. "Mister Quinn, can your sensors see if there's any discrepancies between the weight of metal you've identified as the Star and her mass according to our records and her manifest?"Oh yes, he would be ready, and if there was much less mass than was expected out there, it could mean one of two things: severe damage, or her cargo was taken. Or both. [Bridge] [...] However it was for a good reason as the scientist and her boyfriend brought them the kind of news that they had been waiting for, especially when Isaiah then confirmed what it might be and that he had the coordinates. Her smile was obvious as she acknowledged him, " Excellent work both of you" she said to also include Joshua, then added. " Send the coordinates to Mr Graham immediately".That was when the helm officer also spoke up to possibly query what had been found and looked towards the Petty Officer, appreciating his attempt to join in with the conversation. " With the coordinates you'll get from Mr Quinn, that should pinpoint it's location, assuming it definitely is our missing Freighter".Although that was quickly answered for her as Niles confirmed that according to tactical scans that it looked the Star, before mentioning the possible presence of additional warp trails and made a recommendation on their next steps. It definitely had merit especially since they didn't know whether these other ships were still there or not, plus they didn't know what kind of trouble they were going to encounter. " Mr Quinn, Mr Niles continue your scans, Mr Graham get us there asap and bring us out of warp at Mr Niles's recommendation ... by the way good call with that Mr Niles and also take us to yellow alert".Sitting back in the centre seat, Thea decided to bring the Commodore up to date with what they had found. =/\= Baker to Commodore Perry, we've found the Jupiter Star and currently en-route to her location, will inform you once we arrive, Baker out =/\=" Let's go find our missing Freighter, engage".*************************** The journey wouldn't take long and when the Mac dropped out of warp, they would find the Jupiter Star alone, adrift and apparently lifeless. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] Isaiah nodded at Crewman Graham's question. "As we move closer, telemetry should improve. I'll be able to provide you with a more definite position of the Jupiter Star," Isaiah said. He proceeded to send the coordinates to Graham as Thea ordered him to do so. "Yes, ma'am." His hands quickly skimmed over his panel as he sent the coordinates to the Conn. The scientist turned his attention to Niles, as the tactical officer wanted a clearer picture of the Jupiter Star before the Mac arrived. He was looking for any changes in the ship's mass. Clearly, he wanted to make certain they weren't flying into a dangerous situation as well as ascertain the fate of the crew. "The same should hold true as we close the distance between us and our destination," Isaiah reported back. "The sensitivity of the sensors should improve and I can provide you with a clearer picture of the vessel."Along the way, Isaiah did his best to update the Bridge on what the sensors revealed. However, as they finally dropped out of warp, he was able to take full advantage of the Mac's sensors. "From our records, I can confirm that it's the Jupiter Star," he said aloud. He continued with his scans, a low breath escaping his lips. "She's definitely adrift. I'm not reading power in any working systems and I'm unable to detect any life signs." That was the rub. It wasn't what Quinn could find that bothered him. It was what he was unable to detect.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Engineering] Something was wrong. The Commodore seemed... friendly, leaving Harmon to wonder was it an act? Was it a tactic to endear himself to the crew? It was very strange. Why was here here? Before he had time to answer the Perry’s question he overheard the message from Commander Baker. “I think we ought to go to the bridge, sir,” he said heading into the corridor to walk to the turbolift. There were some concerning comments in his file that Perry wanted to get to at some point, but it could wait...as long as Harmon appeared fit to carry out his duties. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Turbolift --> Bridge]"Multiple civilian ships going missing in this region in such a short time is suspicious, it's usually quiet out here. If it's deliberate and not some natural phenomena, I'd like to be on the ground where it happens so to speak. Makes my job easier, gives me more control on investigating," he explained, of course omitting his suspicions towards the Commodore. His answer was true, just not the whole truth and given Harmon was a practised liar, which was essentially a requirement for the job, so he figured his answer was unlikely to raise suspicion. "I think the more interesting question is what brought you out on this mission, sir. I'm curious. We aren't exactly a prominent or exciting posting. We don't matter much. I understand the need to replace the Captain but why an officer of your status?" he asked hoping he would get a useful and more importantly true answer.

[Bridge] Thea got the answers to her question within seconds of her arriving on the bridge, a testament to how well the crew responded given the situation at hand. Not that she had wanted to interrupt the inner workings of their conversation but there was a renewed sense of determination that this mission wouldn't fail or hinder them, regardless of their previous efforts in this sector of space. He was definitely glad that he was able to get everything answered and cleared up so it would make sense. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ][/font][/b] "Aye Ma'am, Yellow Alert, shields up."With Commander Baker's orders as she took his recommendation, the lights dimmed some and the somewhat less intrusive flashing lights and klaxon of Yellow Alert sounded as the ship was ordered to an intermediate state of readiness. It would, indeed, not not to be caught flat-footed and he had no intention of allowing himself to be caught out like that. He'd experienced that particular feeling while attached as a liaison to the Kurjarians, and that was not one he was looking forward to repeating. However, while correct (if barely), he could not help but fight against a frown at the way the helmsman answered the order to lay the intercept course for the Jupiter Star and to come short as directed. The trip was short, but the whole time the Tactical officer's eyes were glued to his board, monitoring his own sensors, and ready to bring the ship to Red Alert at the drop of a hat should it be necessary. And while not strictly necessary by Yellow Alert standards, he did order the torpedo tubes to be loaded while their launchers would remain in standby mode. Oh no, he would not let himself be surprised again by a hostile force if he had anything to say about it! Once they had dropped out of warp at an astronomically short distance from the Star, Niles started to resort to active scans as well as passive. At this sort of distance, if anyone was in hiding or under cloak, they would know they were being scanned, that there were eyes on them; in fact, he'd turned up the intensity on his sensors to a level that his instructors had referred to as 'boiling the paint off their hull'. But, between those returns and what passives were collecting, he did fire an interrogation to her transponder on a narrow-beam signal as well as a standard hail to which there was no response, and once all the information was before him, he could reply. "Confirmed, Commander, that's the Jupiter Star. I'm not picking up any active emissions from her and she's not answering our hail; her warp core is cold but the residual warp signature is still there, so she hasn't been here that long, but I couldn't tell you exactly how long. I'm reading extensive hull damage and I'm seeing two cargo bays on the port side are open to space as well as other outer sections. I'm not reading any active forcefields but it seems pressure doors are operational and most of the crewed spaces are holding atmosphere."However, he could not conceal his frown when the next bit of information crossed his display, and he reported on it. "This is odd: I'm not picking up any weapons signatures that would explain the extensive hull damage. I really don't know what to make of this, Commander."

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Engineering ]Sir Doug rescued Kaya with a phantom diagnostic (although, actually, there was probably a great deal of routine work she should be doing, including scheduled diagnostics). "Yes... diagnostics...," she said conspiratorialy and then lowered herself down to her chair. But it was about then that the Commodora and Harmon left Kaya and Sr. Doug on their own, but not before Baker's message came through the Commodore's combadge. Kaya caught the salient parts. "... found the Jupiter Star ... location ..."Kaya put her finger to her lips and gave Sir Doug a wink. [Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Engineering]Now with a bit more space from the Commodore, Sir Doug took another swig from his flask. It's not that he feared any consequences, but he did choose to show this bare minimum of deference to the fleet's bigwigs. He, too, caught the key words that Kaya had. "I guess we'll find out soon, or not," he said. "This smells classified, but who knows?"The first lesson of classified information was just how easily it spread.

[Bridge] With the stars changing instantly thanks to the power of the Mac's engines, Thea sat back against the material of the centre chair, her outward presence calm whilst the adrenaline began to kick in. This was it after what felt like an age and as the conversation flowed between her officers, all she could do was pray that they weren't too late. However it seemed that her hope had been for nothing, the moment they dropped out of warp and Isaiah delivered the results of his continued scans, which given their new location would be more accurate. It felt like a punch to the gut upon hearing that she was adrift with no obvious signs of working systems or life. Her head began to spin as she tried to process what was being said, determining what their next plan of action would be. Although before she could acknowledge Isaiah, Joshua added his own report, further confirming the ship and lack of active emissions. Listening just as closely as she had with Isaiah as he revealed, that the crew weren't answering hails as well as details about the warp trail. If that wasn't bad enough, then came the news about the extensive hull damage, cargo bays and other sections exposed to the coldness of space. There was some good out of it with how the doors were holding so at least they wouldn't find any bodies floating around. Then came the strange part as Niles mentioned how he wasn't able to pick up any weapons signatures that would explain the hull breaches and damage. " Very strange indeed, but I'm not about to get too complacent as something or someone, must of done that to the Jupiter Star, so for the time being we remain at yellow alert".Getting up out of the centre seat as she looked towards the lifeless Freighter, Thea took stock for a moment as she considered their options. " As for what you've both told me, I see no other choice but to take a small team over to investigate, especially if there's a chance that the crew are still alive"." Mr Quinn, Mr Niles you're with me, start preparations to beam over and Mr Niles that will include escorting our guest Ms Fox" Thea stated, thinking of the reporter who had also come along on this mission. Whilst to some it might be odd, there was a good reason thanks to an order that had come directly from Command. Given the leak about the Orumila and the Jupiter Star plus the fallout from the incident with the Kurjarian's, the higher ups wanted to show that they were taking this seriously and so Ms Fox was to have full access that also included joining an away team, should they find the missing ship. Thea had to admit that she enjoyed reading Ms Fox's previous articles and knew how important it was in relation to the Mac's reputation and its new Commanding Officer. Orders given, her next call was to the rest of her chosen away team, knowing exactly who she wanted to add. =/\= Petty Officer Som, Ms Fox please report to Transporter Room 2 in 15 minutes to join the away team as we've reached the Jupiter Star =/\= Her next call was to update the Commodore. =/\= Baker to Commodore Perry, we've reached the Jupiter Star and I have a team ready to go within 15 minutes to investigate and make contact =/\=

It was then that Tarin Jin snuck back over and slid into the chair next to Kaya and mouthed the words, 'oh my god'. 'I know', Kaya mouthed back. But then, faster than Kaya could explain more, Baker's voice rang out in her commbadge. [...] =/\= Petty Officer Som, Ms Fox please report to Transporter Room 2 in 15 minutes to join the away team as we've reached the Jupiter Star =/\= [...] Kaya looked stunned. She'd never been on an away mission before, at least not a proper one. She'd been sent off ship to bring over supplies, but the connection was easy to make: they were going to board the Jupiter Star and if anyone was on it, it wouldn't be called an 'away team'. Right? "What...," she hissed. Other Engineering nearby seemed to be as surprised as she was, and some even jealous. Jin cuffed her in the shoulder. "Go!" It was then that her supervisor came over, "Bit of urgency wouldn't go unappreciated, Som. Away bag, phaser, go."It wasn't long before Kaya had double-checked her equipment and was heading to Transporter 2. She ran her fingers through her hair, all the while telling herself to, vek'tema, act like she'd been in Starfleet before. [ Commodore Calvin Perry - Main Engineering --> Bridge] As you like, Perry said good-naturedly, joining Harmon in the turbolift. I just don't want to step on Dr. Baker's toes. While I'm nominally in command, she's the one that knows what's what. And on those same lines, I'm curious what brought you out on this mission. Your record since arriving at Front Ear has indicated that you always stay aboard the station. I can understand wanting a bit of a change of scenery, but why this mission in particular? The commodore wasn't sure if Harmon would give him a straight, or even slightly true, answer, but he was curious what the other man would say. He also just wanted to get a measure of the intelligence officer.

I'm already on my way to the bridge. =/\= He was actually grateful for the interruption so he could order his thoughts before saying anything further to Harmon. There wasn't much to say in response to the intelligence officer's stated reason for being on the Mac. It made perfect sense, but Perry doubted it, just a little. As to Harmon's question of why he was there... With a sigh, Perry said, I wouldn't say I have all that much status, really. Lowest ranking flag officer, whose been commanding a desk since his promotion. In reality, I think I was the one they could spare the best. Most captains are busy in more important parts of the Quadrant. He said the last wryly with a twist of his lips. The turbolift slowed and the doors opened to allow them to exit onto the bridge.

[USS MAC-bridge] “Okay got it Lieutenant Commander Baker” Alex figured that the warp factor of 9.975 would be perfect for the distance they would need to be dropping out of warp. It would take them less time to get there if his calculations were correct. As he was doing that he listened in as lieutenant junior grade Quinn answer his question. The answer seemed to make a lot of sense to him and it cleared up any confusion that he had about it before. He was definitely glad that he was able to get everything answered and cleared up so it would make sense. [...] "Confirmed, Commander, that's the Jupiter Star. I really don't know what to make of this, Commander." [...] Then came the strange part as Niles mentioned how he wasn't able to pick up any weapons signatures that would explain the hull breaches and damage. =/\= Baker to Commodore Perry, we've reached the Jupiter Star and I have a team ready to go within 15 minutes to investigate and make contact =/\= [ PO3 Kaya Som | Transporter 2 ]By the time she got arrived at Transporter 2, she'd successfully shaken the majority of her nerves and appeared the same old self-assured, unimpressed Kaya that everyone was used to. Tag Transporter 2 [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge --> Transporter 2, USS Mac] Isaiah listened as Lieutenant Niles reported his findings, and it seemed to confirm much of what Isaiah had seen. That wasn't much of a comfort and only added to the mystery before them. A mystery that Thea seemed content to pick at. It wasn't long before she assigned both himself and Niles to the away team, apparently joining her. Although, it seemed that Niles would have an additional duty to the safety of the away team, being that he would have to closely look after a guest, the reporter Charlie Fox. Isaiah had some reservations about including a civilian on the away team before they could ascertain exactly what was going on over there. Still, there weren't any visible threats to suggest otherwise. Once he was given the order to meet with the assembled away team in Transporter Room 2, he acknowledged the order, "Yes, ma'am."After relinquishing his post on the Bridge, Isaiah made his way down to the Science lab to collect a science kit for the away mission. He had enough containers to collect a variety of samples, a tricorder carefully placed in its holster. He made a mental note to check in at the armory to secure a hand phaser. Once he was satisfied with all that he had gathered, he began to make his way to Transporter Room 2. As the doors to the Transporter room parted, his eyes fell upon the young trill, Petty Officer Som. He nodded a brief greeting at her, as he filed into the room, awaiting the rest of the team's arrival.

[ Lt Laurel Andrews - Security Office, Deck 9] [...] Although it didn't hurt to be prepared for such an eventuality and get her department ready for when that happened. Besides she didn't want the department to look sloppy or incapable especially with Commander Harmon being onboard, not that she had anything against Intelligence, but at the same time, didn't want him to think that she couldn't organise her team properly. So after checking who was currently on bridge rotation, Laurel allowed a small smile to surface upon seeing Niles's name and returned to her preparations. [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Corridors, Deck 9, USS Mac] It didn't seem to take long for word to filter through the ship that the Jupiter Star had been found. Having finished her inventory check of the armory, S'Riia moved through the corridors preparing to continue with her duties. It only stood to reason that after finding the vessel that an away team would be sent over. Of course, how or why the reporter Charlie Fox had been brought along was still a mystery. Perhaps this was some sort of puff-piece to spew morale in this region, though from what she'd seen of FNN, that was hardly Fox's forte. The half-Caitian continued on through the corridors. Her intention was to formally file away the inventory before proceeding forward to the Bridge. She had a rotation coming up soon, of course, if an away team was being sent over to the vessel, that occasionally caused assignments to shift. One way or another, she'd get word of any changes that impacted her duties. Her tail swiveled in the air behind her, as she contemplated on how to get an autograph from Charlie Fox. For a friend of course.

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Transporter 2 ]Kaya returned the Lieutenant's greeting with a nod. Isaiah Quinn has a reputation as being studiously scientific and a bit stuffy. That, and he was involved with Dr Baker. There was enough rank and department spacing Kaya and Isaiah apart that they'd never socialized, but he was as good as anyone to ask. "LT, is it true? We're going aboard the Jupiter Star?" she asked quietly, trying to maintain a professional posture, but that sly grin of excitement on her face. Isaiah Quinn

Harmon was disappointed with Perry's lackluster answer. There was a chance he was being fully honest, but Harmon remained skeptical. There wasn't much chance of a follow up as Commander Baker announced they had found the missing ship. Harmon followed the Commodore onto the bridge, and came to the realisation that with Baker apparently going on the away team, he was now the second highest ranking officer after the Commodore. He didn't take a seat, but did walk over to the centre of the bridge near the centre chairs.

"Aye Ma'am," replied Niles as he was ordered to Transporter Room 2 for away team duty. Truth be told, that was hardly his favoured sort thing to do. He far, far preferred being at the control of a starship's weapons and using its sensors rather than being on the ground himself. But the other task he had been given, to escort Charlie Fox, was one that was hardly one he was looking forward to. Back in the Blue Beta during the Kurjarian incident he had the very clear impression she didn't like him much; perhaps she was known to not much care for Starfleeters in the first place but he the feeling he was left with is she did not like him. However, her feelings and his own had nothing to do with the order he was given and the effort he would deploy in fulfilling his duties. Recently promoted or not, he was still very much a junior officer and his was not to reason why but to whine and cry, as the old saw went. So, he requested a relief, and once someone took over his station and gave a quick pass-down briefing he made his way down the Turbolift. One quick stop at the armoury saw him fitted with a phaser, light and tricorder and he made his way into the specified Transporter Room, and he took a deep breath as he joined Petty Officer Som and Lieutenant Quinn. However, as he had yet to see the journalist, he tapped his commbadge. =A= "Miss Fox, this is Lieutenant Niles in Transporter Room 2. I've been assigned as your escort on the Star. Please make sure you have at a minimum a light and a tricorder, and sturdy footwear before beaming over."=A=
