[Charlie Fox - VIP Quarters, Deck 6, USS Mac]"Luther Allison."Thonk."Chu'lak."Thonk."J'Taka, son of Dura."Thonk-thonk-thonk...Charlie Fox watched with a disinterested air as her concentration failed, and the tennis ball she's been lazily throwing against a framed image of Earth at night bounced away from her waiting palm. "One hundred and fifty-six days," she muttered, her eyes following the ball until it hit the opposite wall of the living area, its escape attempt meeting an early end in the plush quarters. She sighed as she placed her hands behind her head, cushioning it against the floor. She stretched a pair of shapely legs out until the toes of her boots tapped an ornate skirting board. It was an unorthodox position to be in; lying on the floor of the VIP quarters, but it seemed to help her think. She began to run through the names of those lost on the Orunmila again, committing every one to memory, when the summons to the Jupiter Star finally came. =/\= Petty Officer Som, Ms Fox please report to Transporter Room 2 in 15 minutes to join the away team as we've reached the Jupiter Star =/\= The corners of Charlie's mouth curved upward. Finally, she thought as she grinned, those excited butterflies in her stomach bursting into flight at the prospect of getting to do something. She'd been feeling restless; a little trapped, and absolutely bored of staring out her window at all the unfamiliar stars she wasn't going to get to see for herself. She'd feared that perhaps this assignment would turn out to be just as boring as the Risian one. The Top Ten Most Romantic Spots in the Alpha Quadrant listicle hadn't exactly buttered the universe's bread, even with the holopics of the phallic-shaped flowers. She rose to her feet and reached for her "go-pack". Olsen sat atop it, silent in dormant mode. =A= "Miss Fox, this is Lieutenant Niles in Transporter Room 2. I've been assigned as your escort on the Star. Please make sure you have at a minimum a light and a tricorder, and sturdy footwear before beaming over."=A= Charlie's head snapped upward, her eyes narrowing immediately at the condescension of this communication. Lieutenant Niles? She'd encountered an ensign of the same name some weeks ago during the Kurjarian situation, surely this wasn't the same individual? Starfleet must be desperate, she mused with a shake of her head, recalling the scuttlebutt she'd heard regarding Harmon-the-Spook's promotion to lofty Lieutenant Commander. Her features twisted into an expression of distaste and she pressed the commbadge she'd been given for the duration of her stay onboard the Mac.=/\= "Would you like to advise on undergarments too, Escort? Or will this lacy purple number I'm wearing pass your muster." =/\= [Transporter Room 2, Deck 5]Having only needed to travel one deck, Charlie arrived in good time. Even still, she appeared to be the last. She stepped inside, her pack tight against her back, the hovering sphere that was her holorecorder following closely at her shoulder. Brown eyes scanned those present, before landing finally on Commander Baker. "Commander," she nodded as she fell in, "Thank you for facilitating this."She wasn't sure how much of a choice the woman had, but she could appreciate her not making things any more difficult or awkward than they needed to be.

[Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Engineering -> Bridge]
Now more or less left alone in Engineering, Sir Doug decided it was high time for him, too, to get moving. Since his first love, cheese, was in his pocket, he decided to pursue information, hopping a turbolift to the Bridge. He wasn't technically invited, no, but he'd never been told not to be there - he had the credential.
After a quick ride, the lift came up to the Bridge, and deposited the eccentric man.
"Sir Doug Zaman, at your service," he introduced himself to the room, like the knight that he was.

[Bridge] With the Commodore in transit, Thea knew that she would have to delay leaving the Bridge for a few moments in order to quickly fill Perry in and hand over command, before joining the rest of her team. So as Isaiah then Niles acknowledged the order and promptly exited the Bridge, after relinquishing their posts to other officers. Choosing the team had been easy along with picking herself to lead it as it was the most logical solution, given that she wanted to see the Jupiter Star for herself, not to mention Perry being new to the ship and of course the bonus of not having to worry about Isaiah. When the doors opened to reveal Harmon and Perry, Thea acknowledged the Intelligence officer as he moved down to the command area, before she crossed to the lift at a quick pace, eager not to keep her people waiting. " Commodore, I'll keep you updated with what we find over there, but from what we know, it's not looking good and can only hope that the crew is still alive".There was no time to wait around and all data was ready for the Commodore's perusal but at least she had filled him in with the essential information as the doors opened again to reveal Sir Doug. Another polite acknowledgement and then she was on her way, to lead her first away team since arriving at Front Ear. [Transporter Room 2] Entering the transporter room, Thea was as ready as she would ever be, whilst maintaining a cool calm exterior, knowing that she was in charge. The Doctor was about to speak to those present when Ms Fox arrived and sought her out, to thank her for allowing her to join. " It's our pleasure Ms Fox, I know this is likely a first for the Mac and the Fleet, but I appreciate why you're here".Thea was an honest person and understood the risks it involved, but as far as she was concerned the crew had nothing to hide as she took her place on the transporter pad. " Okay everyone let's go"." Commander, you'll be materialising in one of the safer areas of the ship" the Transporter Chief informed them and once everyone was in place, she acknowledged the recommendation and gave the order. ******************************** When the away team materialised on the other side, the first thing to greet them when they activated their lights was the sight of three dead crew, two human males and one Andorian female. The cause of death looked as though they had been mutilated thanks to the sheer amount of blood present.

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Main Engineering --> Bridge] Before Perry could answer Harmon, Thea's call came through, and he held up one finger so he could respond, =/\= Thank you for the update, Doctor. I'm already on my way to the bridge. =/\= He was actually grateful for the interruption so he could order his thoughts before saying anything further to Harmon. There wasn't much to say in response to the intelligence officer's stated reason for being on the Mac. It made perfect sense, but Perry doubted it, just a little. As to Harmon's question of why he was there... With a sigh, Perry said, I wouldn't say I have all that much status, really. Lowest ranking flag officer, whose been commanding a desk since his promotion. In reality, I think I was the one they could spare the best. Most captains are busy in more important parts of the Quadrant. He said the last wryly with a twist of his lips. The turbolift slowed and the doors opened to allow them to exit onto the bridge. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Bridge]
Harmon was disappointed with Perry's lackluster answer. There was a chance he was being fully honest, but Harmon remained skeptical. There wasn't much chance of a follow up as Commander Baker announced they had found the missing ship. Harmon followed the Commodore onto the bridge, and came to the realisation that with Baker apparently going on the away team, he was now the second highest ranking officer after the Commodore. He didn't take a seat, but did walk over to the centre of the bridge near the centre chairs.

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Bridge] They were barely through the turbolift doors before Dr. Baker was headed off. Perry noticed that a couple of the other stations had new crew members manning them as well. Be careful, Doctor. We'll be monitoring you, was all he got out before she was gone. Perry understood the urgency. With the disappearance of another ship already, those who were most familiar with the circumstances had to be anxious to make sure the crew of the Jupiter Star was okay. Perry headed for the center seat and pulled up the most recent scans to familiarize himself with the current situation. Glancing at Harmon, he asked, Do you have any thoughts so far on what might be happening? His brow furrowed as his eyes continued down the computer screen and he realized that there was a civilian on the away team. His head popped up as Sir Doug entered the bridge, and Perry had a moment of confusion about what the El-Aurian would be doing there. In fact, he realized that it hadn't occurred to him to ask why the civilian was in engineering.

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Transporter 2 ]Kaya returned the Lieutenant's greeting with a nod. Isaiah Quinn has a reputation as being studiously scientific and a bit stuffy. That, and he was involved with Dr Baker. There was enough rank and department spacing Kaya and Isaiah apart that they'd never socialized, but he was as good as anyone to ask. "LT, is it true? We're going aboard the Jupiter Star?" she asked quietly, trying to maintain a professional posture, but that sly grin of excitement on her face. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge -> Transporter Room 2, USS Mac ]
[...] One quick stop at the armoury saw him fitted with a phaser, light and tricorder and he made his way into the specified Transporter Room, and he took a deep breath as he joined Petty Officer Som and Lieutenant Quinn. However, as he had yet to see the journalist, he tapped his commbadge. =A= "Miss Fox, this is Lieutenant Niles in Transporter Room 2. I've been assigned as your escort on the Star. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Transporter Room 2, Deck 5, USS Mac] The hint of excitement was more than apparent on the young engineer's face. It caused Isaiah's own lips to curl into a smile. "Next stop," he said brightly, as if he were a conductor on a train. He took a deep breath as it was only the two of them standing there. The transporter chief was simply tending to the console. Isaiah turned back to Kaya. "You ready for this?" He allowed the question to linger a bit before posing another. "This isn't your first away mission, is it?" If it was, he could only hope the young Trill's would fare better than his own. The soon found themselves joined by Lieutenant Niles. He seemed to take inventory of the room before using his communicator to call the reporter, Charlie Fox. He gave her a light list of supplies to bring and made a suggestion of footwear. It didn't take long for Ms. Fox to make her offense to his suggestion known and asked if the security officer wanted to make suggestions on her undergarments as well. The comment had caused Isaiah's eyes to widen as he stared in Niles' direction, before casting an awkward side glance in Kaya's direction. His eyes drifted back in Niles' direction. "Should I ask the chief to adjust the environmental controls a few degrees warmer?" he asked light heartedly. He didn't envy Niles' assignment when it was made, and he certainly wasn't a fan of it now. Thea was the next to arrive. She seemed prepared to address the rest of the team when Charlie arrived shortly thereafter. Isaiah listened to the exchange between the two of them, still curious about this arrangement. In so many ways, he thought it would have been better to secure the sight first, to make certain there weren't any lingering threats. Of course, none of their scans seemed to suggest that there was a threat of any sort waiting for them. As Thea gave the order for them to get into position, he stepped up onto the transporter pad and waited for the transporter chief to send them on their way. The mention of 'safer' part of the ship seemed to linger with Isaiah as he materialized aboard the Jupiter Star. The very first sight was far from a welcoming one. In fact, if anything it served as more of a warning. His hand was on his tricorder instantly as he moved towards the bodies. Biology wasn't his forte, but given the amount of blood and splatter, it wasn't a hard to see that their deaths were anything other than natural. He waved the tricorder over the area, taking in readings. He saved the data, pocketed the tricorder briefly, and then quickly opened the science kit to collect a few blood and tissue samples. He was rather quick about it as he did. "And the Chief said this was one of the safer areas?" he repeated with a hint of sarcasm.

Harmon moved over to the tactical console, making the the relief officer move aside for a moment while he examined the data. He worked primarily in HUMINT so he doubted he could offer much analysis on his own about what had happened from the scans, but it couldn't hurt to look. "There's extensive damage but not sign of weapons being used. It's possible it was a natural phenomena, some sort of anomaly," he said, not really adding more on Niles' findings. When he noticed the other warp signatures however, he beckoned for Doug to come over. This was an enigma, perhaps the resident enigma could help. "However, there's unidentified warp signatures that do not match the Jupiter Star. But I can't gather much more from them at this time. The cargo being open suggests pirates or some other attacker interested in the cargo. I also can't discount the possibility the warp trails are unrelated and from earlier," he stated to the Commodore. "Got any insight Doug? Let's see if we can trace the warp signatures, find out the Star's path and see what else we can figure out about these other signatures," he said to Doug besides him. "Ugh bridge work," he bemoaned quietly to Doug with a roll of his eyes.

He had just been invited, so now he had every excuse to be around. He examined it through his spectacles, noting the Warp trails "We can trace the decay of the Warp signatures, in addition to the signatures proper, to estimate when they were created. We'll need a broader scan for directionality," he hypothesized. "There should be two trails that intersect, one of them ending here. Those will be the Star and whatever intercepted it."Awkwardly sliding his hands in front of Harmon, the ancient man began to input a scanning algorithm. "On the bright side, we have sensors, instead of just binoculars," he pointed out optimistically. "Been there; wasn't fun."

[ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Transporter Room 2, USS Mac -> Jupiter Star ]
The journalist's sharp retort came as a whipcrack, and to his colleagues in the transporter room it would have been obvious the recently-minted Lieutenant was resisting the urge to respond in kind. Not that the notion of inspecting the journalist wearing a lacy purple little number did not have its own appeal: she was, after all, gorgeous despite her acerbic attitude and sharp dislike for Starfleet. However, he did chuckle at Quinn's remark. "Aloe might be a better idea at this point. Ouch." Despite the seriousness of the upcoming mission, he still had a sense of humour. It was, he had come to realize, one of the most valuable commodities under times of stress, a way to cope with the enormity of it all. Especially in the face of having to keep a journalist safe on a derelict ship that was open to space in a number of places; hell, he could only hope she would keep her hands to yourself and not vent them all into a hard vacuum... However, it would seem the journalist ignored him roundly as she entered the transporter room, and when he took his spot on the pad, he activated his light and placed a hand on his weapon, just in case. ********* The moment they materialized onto the ship, the first thing Niles felt was the chill. A ship put out a lot of heat, and space was a great insulator. However, given it wasn't that much cooler than what was normal on a starship, he judged the Star hadn't been dead in space too long. And then, he noticed the smell. Metallic, salty, acrid, foul and sickly-sweet all at once, alien yet familiar. He could not quite put his finger on it until, in the dark, his light found the source. Three bodies, utterly butchered, and now he knew what he had been smelling.
Blood, viscera, and voided bowels from two different species mingling together, and the sight immediately brought forward the memory of his breakfast of toast, marmalade, blood pudding and stewed tomatoes, in more ways than one. His stomach convulsed, and he found himself choking back down a foul mixture of bile and coffee as he fought the urge the throw up. Training simulations did include mangled bodies, including the smell, but it was never the same as the real thing, no matter how realistic the simulation was. "Holy f... What the fu... I mean what the Hell happened here," he managed around the efforts he was making to control his breathing and push back the nausea.
However, the shock was quick to pass as his mind asserted itself over his visceral reactions. "Ma'am, that's three of thirty accounted for," he then added, forcing his voice to be flat and even, cool and professional. "According to our scans, Engineering is intact. We should make our way there and get systems back online. We can probably get the same monitoring out of there than we could from the Bridge, and if I was going to advise against splitting up before, I would strongly oppose separating at this point."

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Transporter 2 ]Quinn asked if this was Kaya's first away mission and Kaya clicked her tongue and shrugged. "I'm just here for the ..." she mumbled something only funny to her. She shared the exchange of awkward looks with Quinn again at Niles and the journalist threw hands. Between the squeaky-clean Baker/Quinn romance and Whatever That Was with Niles/Fox, Kaya felt like a fifth wheel. Who needed some popcorn. Only thing juicier than bridge drama was away team drama. [ The Jupiter Star ]It always took a moment to get resettled after a transport even to a familiar pad, but when the first thing you saw was that? Something terrible had happened! They were torn apart! The smell hit late but hard. The others reacted and Niles seemed close to throwing up. Kaya suppressed the urge to run and fight - there was nowhere to run and no one to fight. So she clamped one hand over her nose and drew her phaser with the other, spinning around half expecting to find a slavering tizar coming up behind them. But there was nothing. Only Quinn calmly tri-cordering the carnage and Niles making a to-do list. Kaya didn't lower the shaking phaser yet. "Yes, I'd rather not," she concurred emphatically. [Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Transporter Room 2, Deck 5, USS Mac] [...] Thea was the next to arrive. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Transporter Room 2, USS Mac -> Jupiter Star ]
[...] However, it would seem the journalist ignored him roundly as she entered the transporter room, and when he took his spot on the pad, he activated his light and placed a hand on his weapon, just in case.
We can probably get the same monitoring out of there than we could from the Bridge, and if I was going to advise against splitting up before, I would strongly oppose separating at this point." [...][ The Jupiter Star ]It always took a moment to get resettled after a transport even to a familiar pad, but when the first thing you saw was that? Something terrible had happened! [Charlie Fox - Transporter Room 2, Deck 5 -> The Killing Floor, Jupiter Star]Charlie spared a grin that looked a shade rueful when the Commander spoke, but remained silent. It was a first for her too, but she had no doubt in her mind that the amount of people on the Mac who could appreciate that could be counted on one hand. Subconsciously she sucked in a breath and held it as the Transporter Chief energised their transport. She should have kept a hold of her breath. Breathing in the stench of the scene that met them upon their arrival was worse than the sight itself. Behind her, Olsen's white spotlight clicked on, illuminating the three mutilated people with even more clarity. "F**kin' 'ell." Her lips then pressed together as she scanned the remains, unable to stop herself or look away, as she tried and failed to assign names to these poor unfortunates. There was nothing clean about these kills, in fact there was nothing ordinary about them, at all. She couldn't discern a possible cause of death by glance alone, but any number of their injuries could have been responsible. She thought she was holding it together quite well, until she caught a glimpse of what could only be a humanoid's intestine, flopping out of a jagged hole in someone's torso. "Excuse me," she blurted out, before stepping to the side and losing some of her breakfast. Charlie loved to eat. What she loved even more was eating small portions of lots of things; that way she felt she never missed out. And so that morning, in a bid to take advantage of limitless replicator access, she'd had all the components of a Full English, separated, with tea, a pancake, a slice of French toast with berries and maple syrup and a mushroom and cheese omelette. Thanks to her buffet breakfast, there was plenty in her stomach to upchuck all over the Star's bulkheads. Though luckily, she managed to keep a lid on some of the meal. "Oh hi, portobellos." They had been the last thing she'd ate, and the general rule was last in, first out... A cold sweat had broken out on her forehead and her skin turned a deathly shade of pale when she noticed where exactly she'd managed to aim. Inwardly she groaned, missing the exchange about splitting up entirely as she stared at the splatter on the shiny, polished boots. Then her eyes traveled upward, slowly, her face twisted into a cringe as her gaze came to a stop when it met Ensign Lieutenant Niles' face. "I am so, so sorry," she ground out from her hunched-over position, and actually meant it. A little. Meanwhile, her hovering holorecorder was buzzing around, dutifully cataloguing all of the horror.

[Horror Movie Realness - Jupiter Star] The moment the beam faded away and her team was plunged into darkness, until the hand lights were activated. Thea knew that the situation was bad, purely from the smell that she remembered all to well. It was the kind of smell that lingered and clawed to every nerve, almost like you would suffocate with it. Even with her experiences, it didn't always prepare you for seeing such vicious and brutal scenes like the one before them. As Isaiah produced his tricorder to start scanning those poor unfortunate souls cut down where they stood or worked, it allowed the Doctor to put aside her temporary command role and revert back to who she was. Taking a visual look at the bodies, shining her light over them as the others reacted to the horror, as Isaiah made his comment about this being one of the safe areas. " Or so we thought" she remarked, before Niles informed them that there was still 27 other crew members still not accounted for as well as making his suggestion as to what they should do next. It did seem the most logical step to go to Engineering to give them a helping hand in terms of their investigation. She also agreed with them not splitting up until they knew more, a sentiment shared by PO Som. Considering everything, Thea made her decision, before someone lost the contents of their stomach and became vaguely aware of the holo recorder. In fact it took Thea back to her first experience dealing with a traumatic situation and the needless violence during her time at med school and the war. So she felt a surge of sympathy as she realised who it was. " Yes let's stick together and head for Engineering, hopefully we'll find more of the crew as we make our way there ... but first I want to check these poor souls, something isn't quite right".Stepping forward, Thea knew that she had to check, before they left and beckoned to Isaiah to follow. " I need you to record this quickly, so we can move but I'm certain from the way they've been attacked .... that they've had organs removed" she stated as she indicated the holes where organs had once been. Of course this was something that was unusual and only added more questions to this mystery. Once Isaiah was done and everyone was ready, then it was time to move as she just as quickly updated the Mac. =/\= Baker to Mac, so far we've found three of the crew dead and all indications point to them being murdered and until we can confirm, organ removal. We're planning on moving to Engineering to reestablish systems and hopefully locate the rest of the crew, will update further once we know more, Baker out =/\=

The immediate series of reactions to the scene had been plenty, and it would seem that Commander Baker and Lieutenant Quinn had fared best, while Petty Officer Som was shaken but still in the game. The journalist, on the other hand, had not managed to keep herself composed, or hold of her breakfast. Apparently, the nausea must have blinded her, for she had not stepped away very far and when she doubled over and her stomach emptied itself, it had been all over his boots and the cuffs of his trousers. Well, it certainly was a good thing the issued boots went a little higher than the ankle, otherwise, it would be most, most foul all right. Not that the grand old mess that had spilled onto him was pleasant. However, he had managed to look up and away from this fresh puddle, and he took a moment to pat the journalist's back in a way he hoped would be considered comforting as he shook his feet one after the other to get the sick off of the synthetic material. "You're all right, no harm done," he simply said. Well, it would seem that for all her brashness a moment ago, she hadn't been prepared for this. But then again, who could be? And then, the word that some organs were missing brought a shudder to the young Lieutenant. That was... beyond anything he could have been trained for, and now he was right in the middle of it... but he couldn't afford to lose his nerve and his composure, so with the order to make for Engineering, he nodded. "Aye, Ma'am," he replied and while others were drawing tricorders, he drew his own weapon. Quinn had asked a valid question, and he would address that. "I'll take point, Mister Quinn. Petty Officer Som, I'm going to ask you to holster up and follow right behind me, tricorder out." With those directives given, the Tactical Officer started to lead the way towards the Star's engineering spaces, ready to fire should the need arise.

[ Orya - Dies Irae, Outskirts of Talorian Space] The sounds of drunken and happy voices surrounded the Captain of the Dies Irae as her crew celebrated the success of their raid upon the Federation freighter. Orya knew the risks involved in targeting such a vessel but what was the loss of a few men and women when thousands were dying on their home world. No this had been carefully planned, ever since they had entered their system and easy pickings too, thanks to the Intel they had managed to secure, before striking and not giving them the chance to fight back. So this celebration was worth the hangover and the couplings that would no doubt be a result of drinking in excess and it was well deserved. In fact Orya wasn't without company either, as she was fed slivers of liver and offered goblets of Talorian Spiced Wine. " Let us remember the sacrifice and give thanks to the crew of the Jupiter Star, for what they unwillingly gave us and not let their death cries be forgotten ... oh yes and when we return home, we'll be treated like gods and cast out the Batadu".Her words were met with cheers, singing and clapping as her fellow warriors rejoiced and gave thanks, before resuming their celebrations. This left Orya with a smugness that came with such success, even if she didn't realise at this point, that someone had forgotten to hide their warp signature.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Bridge]

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Bridge]
[Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Bridge]Sir Doug approached the Tactical console like it was the most natural thing for him to be doing.

There wasn't a great deal for them to go on, but investigating the warp trail would give them something to do while they waited to find out what had happened aboard the Jupiter Star. And that's when Sir Doug's purpose on the bridge became clear. Get a heading for us, if you can, he said mildly. And feed it to the helm so we can depart as quickly as possible when the away team returns.[Horror Movie Realness - Jupiter Star] [...] =/\= Baker to Mac, so far we've found three of the crew dead and all indications point to them being murdered and until we can confirm, organ removal. We're planning on moving to Engineering to reestablish systems and hopefully locate the rest of the crew, will update further once we know more, Baker out =/\=

Then louder, Perhaps we should send over an additional team of security, Doctor. He phrased it as a suggestion, hoping that Baker wouldn't see it as undermining her authority. The chances that someone had been left behind were relatively slim, or he would have just ordered it, and damn the goodwill he was trying to build.
