[Deck 8M, Front Ear Station] The impromptu tour group passed the promenade's security office and were greeted by the sight of a minor confrontation unfolding at a distance. A man T'Karra vaguely recognized as a Ferengi merchant of questionable wares was complaining loudly and incessantly about a thief. The alleged thief appeared to be a young Human child that the merchant held tightly by the arm. Two patrolmen consisting of a Human and a Klingon appeared to have the situation well in hand, taking statements and trying to talk the man to releasing the child into their custody. The child, whether panicked or dissatisfied by his current predicament, chose that moment to bite down on the Ferengi's hand and flee into the mid meal crowd. To T'Karra's surprise, the merchant screamed and began complaining at a volume she had previously thought impossible for a Ferengi to produce- demanding that someone catch the young Human whom he continued to describe with increasingly more creative euphemisms. The two patrolmen exchanged glances. The Klingon gestured to the PADD on which his Human partner had been presumably transcribing an incident report. The Human's shoulders slumped. The Klingon grinned and trotted after the child, disappearing into the crowd. The Human, now alone with his still irate complaintant, wore a deadpan expression that could rival a Vulcan. She turned back to the group, "Parenting indeed." Jovireh Velal Judith Eastman

[Front Ear, Promenade, Deck 8M] The raised voice caught her attention as it did T'Karra's, and the Crewman took a small step away from her "tour guides". It was just enough to be able to move quickly if the situation escalated. As the child took off running, and the Ferengi started screeching even louder, Jovireh was grateful that the other security team seemed to be perfectly capable of handling it. She was not fond of Ferengi, though from what her mother told her, few Betazoids were. There was just something unsettling about a person an empath couldn't read. At least their behavior was rather predictable as a species, but she still preferred not to have any interactions with them unless she absolutely needed to. Turning back to the others, she grinned as T'Karra confirmed the parenting metaphor. "Except we're trying to teach appropriate public behavior to someone else's children." While Jovireh didn't have any children of her own, she assumed it was better to be able to raise them with the behavior you expect from the very beginning. Trying to tell an adult who was a complete stranger that it was not acceptable to spit on someone just because they told you no... That was something else entirely. And then there were the times when it was actual children involved, and they had to tell that child's parents why their child's behavior was inappropriate... Those were the people who gave her the biggest headaches.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 8M, Promenade]Judy chuckled with mild amusement as events around them dovetailed so nicely into her metaphor. "If people listened to their parents more, then, you'd be out of a job," she quipped, with a little wriggle of her eyebrows. "It might actually help if the Ferengi listened less to their parents," Max noted. "When I see a Ferengi merchant like that, I just wonder what he was like as a kid."Decades of living with and working alongside numerous people from a broad range of species and many walks of life, not to mention raising children and grandchildren, had led Max to believe that nurture was much more powerful than nature. "Where should we head next?" Judy asked, not wanting to simply tick them down her usual list.

[Deck 8M, Front Ear Station] T'Karra considered their options before offering a list of more well known locations to her new acquaintance. "It is my understanding that this deck also contains a commercial establishment that offers mineral baths, a small but popular clothing ship, and a multi-story casino with adjoining lodging," she said, turning to look at Crewman Velal. "Do you have a preference or do you wish to move on to deck 7?" Jovireh Velal Judith Eastman

[Front Ear, Deck 8M] Jov chuckled as Judy commented about how she and T'Karra would be out of jobs if everyone raised their children well. She wasn't wrong about that. When the question came about where to tour next, she listened intently as T'Karra listed off a few more businesses on the deck. The shops she might check out later, but they didn't appeal to her enough to want to see them immediately. "We can move on to Deck 7," she decided simply. Judith Eastman T'Karra

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 8M -> Turbolift]"Deck 7 it is, then," Judy acknowledged, and called a turbolift. The lift appeared quickly, reflecting the off-peak demand. "There are times of the day, especially around the change of shift, when it's actually a lot quicker to go through the Jeffries tubes instead of the lifts. It can be a nice little workout, too," she advised, as she led them into the turbolift for the quick hop. "And sometimes we have senior officers stopping the turbolifts so they can have a chat," Max pointed out, teasing that Starfleet practice. "Not on my watch, they don't," Judy countered, at once engaging in playful banter with her husband and signaling to the non-coms that she didn't embrace all of Starfleet's standard practices.

[Deck 8M, Front Ear Station] T'Karra watched the flow of people through the mezzanine until the doors slid shut then glanced at the couple with barely concealed confusion. She wasn't entirely familiar with the practice they were referencing nor did she understand why it was humorous. Rather than bombarding them with questions, she chose to remain silent brief ride. The turbolift doors opened to reveal the massive Civilian and Visitor Information Center. Around the facility, crowds of tourists queued in (a mostly) orderly fashion. Further along the walkway were some bars, cafes, and the same large casino that dominated all three decks. T'Karra stepped aside and let the Commander and her husband take the lead. [Front Ear, Turbolift to Deck 7] Jovireh remembered the 'traffic jams' during the peak hours at Starbase 173. Turbolifts crammed to capacity, long wait times... It was part of the reason she was not in a hurry to work the Promenade here. Patience had never been her strong suit. "If someone needs to stop a turbolift to have a conversation, then that conversation is best to have in a more private, less used location." She agreed with Judy regarding Max's statement. Though she also knew that humans - particularly the younger generations - did not necessarily have the forethought and restraint to wait for a better time or place to have personal conversations. Commanding officers always had their work cut out for them maintaining professionalism. As they stepped out onto Deck 7, Jovireh glanced around, taking in the different sights. There seemed to be endless possibilities to occupy one's time.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 7]Catching the cue from T'Karra, Judy and Max stepped to the front and led the group. "Deck 7 is really the calmest of the promenade decks," Judy explained. "It's where my assistant Mabel and I like to go for our coffee breaks...""...decaf breaks..." Max interrupted, reminding his wife of her health conditions. "...yes, decaf breaks. The New Frontier Bakery & Cafe is lovely for that, their decaf roast is to die for. If you're in for a particularly heavy meal, there's a nice potato bar called the Spudriq. There's the visitor info center, where all those tourists are congregating."While speaking, Judy also set a quick walking pace. It was a habit of her native New York City, the place where she had most commonly shown people the sights over her long life.

[Deck 7M, Front Ear Station] T'Karra lengthened her stride to keep up; an action someone of her height was unused to. The couple was more spry than she had anticipated. "I cannot speak for the... potato bar," she began with what almost sounded like a question. The fact that a single Terran root vegetable could be prepared in such a vast variety of ways that it warranted its own bar was baffling. "But much like the Blue Beta, the bakery has a diverse selection of foods. Their Vulcan and Trill options in particular are quite good." She motions to the Civilian and Visitor Information Center as they pass, "Along with information, the ITT center also provides discounts to single Starfleet personnel when purchasing tickets to local events and leisure travel services." [Front Ear, Deck 7M] Jovireh was also not expecting the sudden pace change as the couple took the lead, but adjusted accordingly. She glanced around as Judy and T'Karra gave their input on the businesses. "There's certainly no shortage of places to eat here," she commented with amusement. "Or things to do, for that matter." It seemed she could go somewhere different on each day off and it would still take over a month to experience it all. Starbase 173 was more of a tactical and diplomatic station; so while there had been quite a few recreational opportunities, it didn't have quite the diversity she was seeing here. It seemed Jov might enjoy this posting after all.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 7, Promenade]Max picked up on the questioning tone from T'Karra. It made sense that she, a Vulcan, wouldn't be as familiar as a human would with the sheer versatility of the potato. However, he chose to avoid going on a deep dive of potato history. "It really is a very vibrant place. You know, we have more civilians than fleeters, so that feeds into the whole character, of the Promenade most of all. It keeps us busy, but I prefer it this way," Judy replied to Jovireh's statement. "Judy's previous posting off Earth was on a ship, a few years back, and that was a completely different environment," Max added. He preferred the more exciting, civvie-friendly station environment.

[Deck 7M, Front Ear Station] "I also recommend visiting decks 31 and 32 when you have the time," she said to the Crewman when she mentioned the broad range of recreational activities. "The gymnasium and holosuites are almost as extensive as the mezzanine." She turned to listen to the couple recounting their experiences. It seemed that the Commander preferred being productive to idle. Stagnation was usually detrimental to the body and mind, after all. T'Karra could appreciate the sentiment. "May I ask where you were posted prior to this assignment and what made the experience so different?" Jovireh Velal Judith Eastman

[Front Ear - Deck 7 Promenade] Jovireh nodded in agreement as Max talked about the differences between life on the station and Judy's previous ship posting. "Life on a ship is very different. My father ended up installing holographic emitters in one of our vacant quarters to turn it into a holodeck. The options were rather limited, but I found it far more entertaining than watching plants grow." She knew the biggest reason her father had made the investment was to keep her from pestering the crew or interrupting their experiments, but she was grateful for it all the same. When T'Karra suggested other recreational areas for her to check out later, she swiftly pulled out her PADD to make note of it. Both the holosuites and gymnasium were appealing to her; she did not want to forget about them before she had the opportunity to take a look. "Thank you, that's very helpful."

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 7, Promenade]Judy took a subtle, but long, breath, a sure sign she was preparing to launch into a story. "We were on the USS Whirlaway, an Excelsior-class refit, from... well, I was there from early '74, right around the start of the war, Max and the kids joined me after the war ended, and I stayed until about the summer of... Helen [fn]Eastman, Granddaughter[/fn] had just been born, so that'd be the summer of '77, 3 years ago. For most of my career, the... God knows how many years before the war and the two and a half between that assignment and this one, I was on Earth, in the Corps of Engineers," she explained, laying out the timeline of that post in the context of her career. "It was a rewarding posting, but socially, as a family, it's not the best experience. It's a very... particular social status, being the First Officer's husband, the First Officer's kids, when all the families around are fleet families," Judy continued. Max nodded. He wasn't one to complain, but his age and his status as the ship's Second Gentleman had been an isolating factor socially.
