[Deck 7M, Front Ear Station] The fact that Crewman Velal’s father had built a holodeck for his daughter was intriguing. While there was value in learning about her parents’ chosen scientific focus, children were often inclined to boredom when not sufficiently engaged. It was likely that her parents did not have the time to both keep her engaged in learning and conducting their own research. She dipped her head slightly at the woman’s thanks. As the Commander began to describe her career in detail, T’Karra listened intently. Her service appeared to be quite extensive. It was curious that the Federation allowed families to serve alongside service members during a time of war. There was one question that still remained after the First Officer’s explanation came to an end. “Are you implying that because of your rank and social status, your family was ostracized?” She had experienced such things before, though the circumstances were more extreme. Perhaps they were universal. Unfortunate. Jovireh Velal , Judith Eastman

[Front Ear - Deck 7] Jovireh listened intently as Judy explained a bit about her recent service history. "I didn't know Starfleet allowed family to join on vessels as well," It was obvious families were allowed to live on stations, and it made sense for them to do so. But vessels were smaller, with limited resources, and were quite a bit more dangerous. T'Karra also posed a good question, and Jov found herself curious about the human nature of people being so inseparable from those they are associated with, to always be treated the same...

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 7, Promenade]The turn the conversation had taken was a reminder for Judy of the generation gap. Neither T'Karra nor Jovireh had lived as long as she had, experienced as many postings, or started a family as she had done. Fortunately, she was very comfortable explaining things from the vantage point of her advanced age, as was Max. "The Whirlaway's mission after the war was a survey trip, so they allowed families onboard. As a family, we didn't want to be split up like we had been during the war," Max explained. There was some danger to it, but they had decided that it was the right move for their family. "The social environment wasn't anything hostile, just very awkward. I think you know the way people in the fleet talk to senior officers - reverent, cautious, careful; nobody wants to accidentally offend the boss, or look stupid. Now, project that onwards: people think, understandably, that if they get on Max's bad side, that's just as dangerous as being on my bad side. So you get this situation where social interactions, for him and for me, were tinted with this stilted formality," Judy answered T'Karra's question, affecting an exaggeratedly posh manner, with heavily enunciated T's, on the last two words. "It got better with time, as people got used to us," Max added, with a gentle smile. It really did get better, but things were easier now, on the station, where he had his own job, and they had social circles that weren't tied to Starfleet.

[Front Ear - Deck 7M - Promenade] Jovireh nodded as Max explained that survey ships allowed families on board, as opposed to military vessels. That did make more sense, as did their reluctance to continue living apart once the war was over. She smiled a little in amusement at Judy's explanation of why her family had been treated such. Yes, Jov understood that feeling quite well... Such as at the beginning of this very tour. Her attention shifted back to Max when he reassured that people eventually warmed up to them and became more welcoming. "You do make it a little easier than some" she admitted to him. There had been several officer families aboard Starbase 173 while she was there, but they really only ever socialized with the senior officers or other civilians. That may have been due to the social discomfort among the junior officers and enlisted personnel though, now that she thought about it.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Promenade, Deck 7M]Jovireh's words brought a smile to Max's face. "Thank you; we try," he said, happy to be thought of as approachable. The role of an elite (of any kind) was unnatural to him. The use of the plural "we" was instinctual, but telling of the couple's closeness. "Do we want to check out the Holosuites and the gym now?" Judy then offered, picking up on T'Karra's suggestion from earlier. It seemed like the thing to do to keep the tour going.

[Deck 7M, Front Ear Station] "The amenities on the recreation decks are rather substantial," she added. The gym alone had two decks worth of equipment. It would be advantageous to pay the facility a visit if only to be familiar with the location of the security crew's daily fitness and hand-to-hand combat training. And it was certainly a good place to meet more individuals who would likely be her future coworkers. Jovireh Velal, Judith Eastman

[Front Ear - Deck 7M - Promenade] Jovireh smiled at the suggestion of moving on to the other recreational areas. It seemed she'd be getting to check out the gym sooner than she'd anticipated. "By all means, lead the way," she replied, gesturing to the turbolift. In the past she had spent quite a bit of her spare time in the gym, and she was excited at the possibility of doing so here as well. Not only was physical fitness important in her line of work, but it had also become rather therapeutic for her. It was the only thing that seemed to help after her counselor had suggested she find healthier outlets for her emotions than the activities she had been doing. And there really was nothing quite like a friendly sparring match after a tough assignment.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 7M -> Turbolift]Judy and Max led the group back to the turbolifts. =A= "Deck 31," =A= Judy ordered one by voice when it arrived, sending them on their way. "Judy and I like to go down to the gym a couple of times a week, early in the morning when it's pretty empty," Max added, commenting on the couple's own practices. Ever since Judy had to give up her coffee addiction, the couple had taken up morning exercise - either at the gym or at home - as an alternative way to get the blood pumping early in the day.

[Turbolift, Front Ear Station] "Early morning is ideal," T'Karra agreed. "Though it is crucial to arrive prior to shift change." Due to circumstances involving a rogue domesticated feline, a broken replicator, and interrupted meditation, T'Karra was late in starting her workout the previous week. By the time she arrived at 0615, the facility was filled nearly to capacity with personnel just coming off mid shift. An impressive feat considering the size of the gymnasium. Between waiting for stations to open and for weights to be free, it took nearly two hours to complete her usual hour long regimen. Jovireh Velal , Judith Eastman

[Front Ear - Turbolift to Deck 31] "Middle of the night is my favorite time to go, when my schedule allows it," Jov chimed in with her own routine. "On my last post, there would usually only be a couple other people there at that time, so it was easy to find a corner away and pretend I was alone in the room." She didn't feel the need to add that she started working out at the gym when nightmares or anxiety kept her from sleeping. It had eventually turned into a preferential habit, one she hoped to resume even though she no longer suffered from the same issues. At least, not as frequently as before. There was something distinctly peaceful during the night, which she found remained true even in space when 'night' was just a number on a clock. Even stations seemed to breathe a little easier when the majority of residents were asleep.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Turbolift -> Deck 31]The older couple listened to both younger women. In this sense, the two of them and T'Karra were kindred spirits. "You're right about the change of shift. It's hectic, and not just for the gym," Max said. At the other end of the alpha shift - the afternoon - he faced a rush at the Blue Beta kitchen. The lift steadily came to a halt. "Lead the way," Judy said to T'Karra, trying to be encouraging. The XO was, after all, rather prone to talking too much.

[Deck 32, Front Ear Station] "Aye, Commander," she said with the slight dip of her head. She took point, passing the multi-story replimant that bustled with customers even the more subdued hours of business. Soon it would be filled to capacity again with residents searching for a cheap (and mostly edible) end meal. Directly adjacent to the eatery, two levels of holosuites towered above them. Colorful signs advertised their newest programs and prices. Below, a small line of patrons queued at a kiosk to cash in their credits for tickets. They came to a stop near a suite from where an Andorian family exited, chatting happily and dressed in winter attire. The still running simulation displaying a winter resort blinked out of existence as they doors began to close. T'Karra's hands returned to the small of her back and she turned to her group, "Our first stop."

[Front Ear Station - Deck 31 - Corridor] Jovireh stepped out of the turbolift, her gaze sweeping around to take in all the bustling people and flashing signs. Of course the recreational centers would be busy, especially this time of day. She didn't foresee herself spending a great deal of time in this particular area, so she didn't worry about it too much. Holoprograms were great for breaking up a monotonous routine, and she certainly saw the appeal for families or romantic partners. Though seeing as she currently had neither, she preferred to spend her off time in reality unless she needed an escape. She still scanned the advertisements though, remaining open to the possibility that a program or two might catch her attention. As the Andorian family exited the nearest holosuite however, her concentration was broken as she had to quickly sidestep to avoid getting run into by one of the children whom was paying less attention. Hearing T'Karra speak as the other Crewman stepped off to the side, Jovireh stepped a little closer to her to avoid standing in the path of traffic. "I assume this area is busy pretty consistently," she guessed, glancing over her shoulder to the couple as well. From what she had gathered of her guides, the humans were far more likely to have spent extended time in this particular section than the Vulcan.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Deck 31]Judy and Max leaned slightly into each other as they walked behind the youngsters. "It's certainly never quiet here, but there's always a different crowd. You come in in the middle of the day, or the early afternoon, and it's mostly families, sometimes our family. You come in the evenings, and you see more of the young working crowd, like Starfleet personnel after their shifts. Come in at night, and that's when you see more drunk and disorderly mishegoss[fn]Yiddishism roughly meaning "craziness", "nonsense", or "tomfoolery", potentially not picked up by the Universal Translator[/fn] go down in the holosuites, the kind of thing that gives the sanitation bots some work," Judy explained, responding to Jovireh's question. "Judy has the occupancy charts for the holosuites somewhere. I think the real lull is in the early morning, when they're getting cleaned," Max added, alluding to just one of his wife's many data-aggregation projects.
