[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Quarters, USS Mac]Judy sat down in her study, at the conclusion of a long day, to record her log. "First Officer’s Log."
"Coming into this assignment, I gave myself a set of goals to focus on, a mandate. I wanted to guide the crew towards a spirit of peaceful exploration that I think was wounded heavily in the war. God, it seems, had other plans, and so here we are testing weapons of war."
"I have no delusions about the dangers that lurk in this region of space, and I certainly believe that we have to be prepared to face them, to defend ourselves and others around us, from pirates and other renegade groups as well as from sovereign actors. We need these fighters, and I’m glad we’re deploying them."
"… oy, if I knew back in college that I’d grow up to say something like that…"
"The fighters are a good idea, but recruiting the Nyberrites to test them is not. Yes, they have far more experience in small-craft operations than we of the Federation do, but there is the issue of… … well, you don’t go for a follow-up with a doctor that nearly killed you. Considering the fact that the Nyberrites asked for Banks’ repatriation as the price for their help, I tend to think their lesson from the joint exercises was that they should cheat harder, not that they shouldn’t cheat. I don’t have much reason to believe that Vasser, personally, is any better in this regard than her bosses. I’ll be shocked if espionage isn’t on their minds."
"This decision, evidently, was not mine to make. The Admirals made their call, and my job is to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. It's a lot like parenting a teenager: they don't listen to you, but you're always there to fix it. I have every intention of doing this to the best of my ability, and to make sure that my crew has the tools they need to do the same."
"I just hope I’ll be proven wrong. End log."Hearing the magic words, "end log", Max entered the room. "Is the pity party over?" he asked, ribbing her just enough. Judy started to think of a comeback, but her brain processed her husband's words and she realized that yes, she was allowing herself a little too much self-pity. "How do you always know just what to say?" she asked rhetorically, as she stood up to join him. The next day…[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Ens. Mabel Henriksen - Bridge, USS Mac]The time had come, and Judy took it as she always did. She had come to the bridge, with a pan of brownies in hand, and performed her duties with all her usual warmth and devotion. The Admirals had made a decision, and it fell to her crew to make it work, so she simply had to bring her A-game. Now three hours into the shift, there were still some brownies left, and Mabel brought along lunchtime refreshments (also from the Eastman-Williams kitchen): large quantities of New York-style pizza, including both cheese and veggie pies[fn]And NO PINEAPPLE[/fn]. “Alright, folks, it’s showtime. Let’s open the shuttlebay doors, and make sure we have eyes on the Nyberrites too,” she directed her bridge crew. "If you get any pizza grease on your consoles, that's alright. Just make sure you wipe it off."

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Fighter Hera, Main Shuttlebay] Naturally Calvin had been a little apprehensive when the orders came through, informing him and the rest of the command team that they would be once again working with the Nyberrite Alliance. As sceptical as he was following the less than successful last encounter with Vasser and her people, one thing made it bearable and that was the opportunity to do something that he hadn't done since he received his promotion. Of course there were other qualified pilots to test the newly commissioned fighters whilst simultaneously ensuring that there was no foul play. However Calvin had made the decision that he would be the one to participate along with a co pilot chosen by the Colonel herself. Whilst some of his crew might think he belonged on the Bridge and let someone else do the hard work, Calvin hadn't given them much choice, evoking rank and his many years experience of flying and besides, it felt good to be suited up and doing something that wasn't his normal day to day duty. So here he was doing the last minute checks as the minutes to departure ticked down and a chance to forget about everything and make his late wife proud as he regained some of his youth by putting this fighter through its paces. "Course is set and laid in, all systems are in the green, so let's get ready and confirm with the Bridge, that we're all set to depart on time" He said to his co pilot, before opening a channel to the Bridge. =/\= Perry to Bridge, Hera is all set and ready to embark on schedule =/\=

[Crewman Jovireh Velal - USS Mac - Bridge]When she received the orders for another mission onboard the Mac, Jovireh had been less than thrilled. Currently, she hated this ship, as the memories of her last mission were still quite fresh. However, she couldn't avoid it forever, especially not when that would involve disobeying orders. So she found relative solace in the fact that she was actually assigned to the Bridge - a position she hadn't expected to ever receive. With so many of the Starfleet personnel assigned to shore leave, they were operating with a skeletal crew, so here she was. On the one hand, at least this posting made it easier for her to avoid Deck 12, and - hopefully - Sickbay. On the other hand... the tactical aspect of her career was not one she enjoyed. Face-to-face combat was one thing, but technological warfare... pressing buttons on a console to fire weapons at another ship... It was just too impersonal. Too easy to forget that there were living people on that other ship. Jovireh only hoped that they wouldn't end up in a firefight on this mission. But she knew she had to at least be prepared for the possibility. After all, no one had expected to be in the middle of a murder investigation during a diplomatic mission, either. The sight of so much food on the Bridge was definitely not what she had expected either, and she was fairly certain it wasn't in line with regulations, but she certainly wasn't going to complain. Having learned the hard way to eat whenever she had the opportunity, she held a half-eaten slice of pizza in her left hand while her right hand passed over the console in front of her, keeping an eye on both the Mac's systems as well as the reports coming in from the shuttlebay. When the order came from the Commander, followed by confirmation from the Commodore, she typed in the required commands. "Depressurizing shuttlebay. Releasing seals... Hera is clear for launch." She tried to distract herself from her sudden nervous tension by taking another quick bite of pizza. Here goes everything. [Lt. Paawin Riyo - USS Mac - Sickbay]Riyo had also been less than thrilled when he'd been assigned to the ship instead of granted shore leave, but with Doctor Baker away at a conference, and him being the next highest-ranking available doctor, he didn't have much of a choice. And he certainly did not want to take her place at the conference, so all things considered... He sat at the desk in Sickbay, arms crossed over his chest, not seeing a reason to try and shake the mood he was in so long as he was alone. Looking around, he sighed deeply in frustration. The room was so large, and spacious, and tidy, and it was giving him anxiety. There wasn't even anything he could do about it, because he was just filling in temporarily. Doctors really didn't like it when someone else rearranged their setup. He knew that personally. But if he was going to be working in here, he needed to at least be able to function. Getting up, he walked over to one set of biobeds, pulling the curtains partially closed around them. It wasn't much, but it helped the room look less open, and it was about all he could do. This was going to be a long trip. Hopefully Leanna was at least able to enjoy her vacation...

[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac ] Lt. Commander Quinn sat at his station, reviewing some of test results from the redesigned warp nacelles. It wasn't that the Hera was expected to actually go to warp during this test flight, but it's systems had been integrated with several other systems in order to trim the power drain. From the results he'd seen, the nacelles had endured the stress test and should be in optimal condition throughout the scheduled exercise. Still, it didn't hurt to be extra cautious. Quinn's eyes raised at the sound of Commander Eastman's voice. He had wished that Thea had come along, but he had other others. What really surprised him was Commodore Perry's decision to man the craft himself. It wasn't as if anyone could really argue with him, merely express their concerns. Still, he contacted the bridge to let them know that he was prepared to disembark. For the time being, Quinn had opted to forego lunch, but planned to secure himself a slice once these tests were done. The warning to watch out for the Nyberrite Alliance hadn't gone unnoticed. He quickly performed a cursory scan. "There are no anomalies detected in the testing field," Quinn reported. "And it looks like the Soteria is primed to launch their fighter as well."Quinn's eyes casually glanced towards the tactical station as Crewman Velal oversaw the depressurization of the shuttlebay and the launch of the Hera. His eyes then turned towards the main viewer, as he anticipated watching the craft actually leave the Mac's shuttlebay. Tag: Judith Eastman (& Mabel), Jovireh Velal , Bridge crew
[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser & NPC - Alpha Sergeant Gorsk, Bridge, NSS Soteria ] && Colonel Vasser sat in her chair, listening to the bodies around the bridge busily work as they prepared to monitor the entire test. There was nothing extravagant expected. In fact, everything was to be routine. The Soteria was offering their best pilot to participate, Captain Mauroos, whom was rather excited to see what the Federation had come up with. He was certainly looking forward to giving a few pointers, though his enthusiasm wasn't as high once he learned that Commodore Perry would be piloting the vessel. If she didn't know him better, she'd have sworn that he had his heart set upon someone else being in that cockpit. "Captain Mauroos, you are cleared for launch," Vasser said after activating the comm on the arm of her chair. "Sergeant, inform the Mac that Owl-1 is underway. We stand to begin on their order.""Aye, Colonel," Gorsk stated as she proceeded to send the communication to the Starfleet vessel. "Communique sent."Vasser sighed and nodded. Her mind was still on the arrangements that had been made with Starfleet.[fn] A Matter of Containment - DT between Col's Nox & Vasser[/fn] It seemed that Colonel Nox was every bit the strategist whether it be tactics or diplomacy. Chances were, that if all went well, a few whispers could easily elevate him to General... at least in Vasser's opinion. Tags: Nyberrite Bridge
[NPC - Captain Mauroos, Owl-1 ] The Nyberrite Squadron commander finished his systems check. Upon getting the green light from the Bridge, he activated his maneuvering thrusters and proceeded to exit the launch bay. As he came about, he couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment. He had been hoping that the helmsman he'd flown against during the training exercise would have been the one to pilot the fighter. Suffice it to say, she had certainly made an impression upon him. In his mind, flying with her would have been akin to asking her for a dance. Perhaps when this was all over, he could find her and buy her a drink... assuming she was even aboard of course. "All systems nominal, Colonel," Mauroos said checking in. "And I promise to go easy on the Fleeter." He was considering pulling his punches a bit. After that last training exercise, it seemed that those Fleeters may have gotten a tad soft since the war. =0= "Negative, Captain. The Commodore would not be pleased to learn you were pulling your punches. Don't worry. He's a big boy. Perry can handle himself." =0="Acknowledged, Colonel," Mauroos replied. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Bridge]
Whichever admiral had made the asinine decision to approve this exercise and trust Vasser again was either profoundly stupid or extraordinarily corrupt. Not only were they to work with the Alliance again, but they were to give them access to their new fighters, and on top of that they had ordered the release of the treasonous spy, Robyn Banks. The decision was so suspect that Harmon had begun making inquiries into the circumstances of the decision, and had some of his contacts cautiously poor around to investigate if there was any potential links between the Alliance and anyone in the admiralty. For now, there was little he could do but watch closely and try and mitigate anymore screwups.
On top of all this, Perry had pulled rank to get himself made pilot. An absurd abuse of power. Regardless of his piloting experience, it should have gone to a current pilot, not some has been flag officer who was unlikely to actually fly one in real operations. Harmon remained suspicious of the man and the circumstances of Capitan Ellis’ mysterious reassignment. What was Perry up to?
The Commander at least, was on the same page this time. Having been burned by Vasser last time, she was also unhappy with the Admiralty overruling her. This made Harmon’s job a little easier. He sat on the bridge next to her brooding, eating brownies (he avoided the pizza as the lack of pineapple was a tragedy) as he read reports on his PADD, appearing disinterested in what was going on on the bridge. Despite the appearance he was aiming to project, he was only half paying attention to is reading, and was listening out to what was occurring on the Bridge.

[ Nurse Tania Logan - Sickbay, Deck 7] Tania hadn't been on shift for very long and had spent most of that time, ensuring that all supplies had been accounted for, so she could finish refilling all equipment trays that were strategically placed next to all of the available bio beds. With Sickbay relatively quiet, it was always best to have everything ready as the situation could change at any moment, especially with the impending test flight of the new fighter. News had travelled fast amongst the lower decks about the Commodore himself overseeing the flight personally and whilst it was unheard of, Tania didn't want to speculate about his abilities. Still it would be very interesting to see how it went, but for now she had work to do, so as she pushed the equipment trolley into the main treatment area, Tania caught sight of Dr Paawin, who had taken over Sickbay duties whilst Dr Baker attended a medical conference on Moranda VI. " Afternoon Doctor" she said in greeting as she stopped and began to unload equipment onto the nearest tray.

[Crewman Jovireh Velal - USS Mac - Bridge]Hearing the next set of orders called out, the Crewman nodded in acknowledgment, chewing faster as she typed in the message. Perhaps she should wait before filling her mouth with food again. "Message sent," she replied as soon as she was able to swallow. "Beginning countdown." Jovireh spared a quick glance at the view screen, watching the fighters take their positions. She had to admit... The Bridge definitely had the best view. Her gaze dropped back down to the consol in front of her. "Twenty seconds." She could feel the apprehension in the room steadily begin to rise. Humans really were bad at keeping their emotions subdued. To their credit though, those on the Bridge were at least able to control any physical signs of their tension. Jovireh took a slow deep breath, pausing for a moment to strengthen her mental barriers. She needed to focus on what was in front of her, not what was around her. [ Commodore Calvin Perry - Hera, Shuttlebay to Space] As the seconds ticked by, Calvin could feel the adrenaline beginning to course through his veins, a feeling that had been almost forgotten thanks to his career advancement. But now it was back and it felt so good to be physically in control of a ship once more. It was almost like a euphoric moment, especially when the confirmation from Tactical came through, informing them that they were now clear for departure. Calvin was well aware of the doubters who had questioned his decision but only time would tell whether he would prove them wrong as the gentile voice of his XO filtered through in response to his earlier comm. =/\= See you on the other side, Perry out =/\=Then it was time to put his experience into practice as his hands moved swiftly towards the controls themselves and with one final word of encouragement to his co pilot, it was time to focus. " Let's see what this beast can do" he said, his voice full of glee and sounding a lot younger than he was. The final countdown began as they received a further message from the Bridge and Perry knew that his counterpart in the Owl-1 would of also received the same communique. 5, 4, 3, 2 ... 1Moving forward, Perry expertly guided the Hera out of the cavernous shuttle bay and out into the inky star filled blackness of space, before taking up position, ready to begin.

[ Avi Moz | Shuttlebay, NSS Soteria ]
Avi had gotten good at this and she hated it. It had been months since she'd been forced undercover as a private in the Nyberrite Alliance, trained too little, and thrown into the bowels of the Soteria. She lived every day worried she'd been found out as a spy for Starfleet Intelligence, but in the mean time? She was damn good at this. (Once she figured out how to keep her mouth shut taking an order.)
Another collaboration with the Mac which presented an opportunity to get out, but as of yet, she didn't have anything worthy of extracting her blue ass.
Avi cleared the deck of the shuttlebay, stepping back to wipe off her hands as the Owl-1 got underway. She'd seen to the fighter's mechanical components herself, far more experienced at such things than anyone else.

1Moving forward, Perry expertly guided the Hera out of the cavernous shuttle bay and out into the inky star filled blackness of space, before taking up position, ready to begin.
tag Judith Eastman , co pilot & soft tags to the Bridge [ Lt. jg Aravis - Hera] Lt. Aravis sat tensely and silently in her seat as the commodore went through the pre-flights and got the go-ahead from the Mac to launch. She'd been stunned when she'd been chosen to accompany Perry as his co-pilot. Actually, she'd been rather shocked to hear that he was going to be the one test flying the new fighter, but that was beyond her pay grade to question. Aravis didn't expect to do any flying herself, but she was keeping an eye on all of the other systems so that Perry could concentrate on piloting. Engines look good, sir. All systems nominal, the young Ba'ku reported quietly.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Bridge] [...] The Commander at least, was on the same page this time. [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Ens. Mabel Henriksen - Bridge, USS Mac][...] =A= "Acknowledged, Commodore. Good luck," =A= She took a slice of pizza, folded it down the middle (as is the proper way to eat a slice, to a New Yorker), and began to enjoy it as she took in reports from her crew. "Ms. Velal, send a quick message to the Owl-1, the Hera, and the Soteria. The simulation begins in 30 seconds," she instructed, looking towards the tactical console. "Mr. Quinn, keep up the good work."She then looked towards Harmon, who looked more miserable than usual... and didn't smell like booze. "For what it's worth, I'm with you on this one. Even Mikey[fn]Mr. Michael Eastman, grandson, age 6[/fn] knows better than to trust the Nybberites," she said to the young man, in a whisper so the rest of the bridge (other than Mabel) couldn't overhear. "Ten seconds." [ Commodore Calvin Perry - Hera, Shuttlebay to Space] [...] Calvin was well aware of the doubters who had questioned his decision but only time would tell whether he would prove them wrong as the gentile voice of his XO filtered through in response to his earlier comm. =/\= See you on the other side, Perry out =/\=[...] Moving forward, Perry expertly guided the Hera out of the cavernous shuttle bay and out into the inky star filled blackness of space, before taking up position, ready to begin. All systems nominal, the young Ba'ku reported quietly. [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac ] Isaiah remained attentive at his station, even as Commander Eastman commended him and told him to continue on. And he did just that, even as he heard Crewman Velal countdown to the Hera's departure. As the seconds ticked by, everything still appeared to be nominal, even up until the moment of truth. "Hera away," he announced on the Bridge. He then his eyes upward. There was simply something to be said about seeing moment like this upon the main viewer. He allowed himself a few seconds before turning his attention back to the console and readouts it was displaying. "Waters still calm," Isaiah announced. "Only four signatures currently present in this region. Our two vessels and the Nyberrite ships." At least it seemed they wouldn't be disturbed. Now, it was time to see what the Hera could do.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - Bridge, NSS Soteria ] Colonel Vasser watched the main viewer as her comunications officer reported the message from the Mac. As the seconds ticked away, her tactical officer announced that the Hera was underway. It was a rather exciting moment, all things consider. She laced her fingers together and placed them in her lap after crossing her legs as a smile slid upon Vasser's face. "Well, let's not miss the show," Vasser stated. "Ops... be sure the link with Owl-1 is secure. I want their telemetry recorded and compiled with our own simultaneously." As the affirmative was uttered, Vasser turned her eyes towards the screen once more as the small crafts began to approach one another.
[NPC - Captain Mauroos & 1st Lieutenant Jonas Bennigan - Cockpit, Owl-1 ] "The Hera is away, Captain Bennigan reported. His eyes continued to read over the display. His eyebrows arched at the readouts. "I guess it's time to say hello.""Yes it is," the Nyberrite pilot stated. "Intercept course plotted. Moving ahead, at one-half impulse. Mauroos maneuvered his ship effortlessly on an intercept course. As the distance between the two ships closed, Mauroose activated the comm. "Owl-1 to Hera. Are you ready to put her through her paces? I'll even offer you the first move, sir? the Captain offered respectfully.

[NPC - Specialist Javik - Shuttlebay, Soteria ] The Reman stared out the main bay as Owl-1 moved out of sight. There was nothing else left for him to do, but wait until the vessel returned. Naturally, there were others that were racing to any port where they could actually see Captain Mauroos run circles around the Fleeter. There were even a few pools about how quickly Mauroos would get it done. Naturally, the Federation had long odds. It was almost worth it to drop a few credits on the peace-mongers. His eyes traveled around the room until they fell upon that Bolian. He'd only seen her sparingly, coming aboard only a few days ago himself. Still, it was his Engineering prowess that had made him a hot commodity for this assignment. Truth be told, he'd probably be back on Sigma-4 once these dealings with the Federation were done. There were plans to get a shipyard underway in the same system, and the Alliance would likely hoard as many Engineers as they could spare. Rumors were there had been a slight dip in recruitment, but with the incentives being offered, chances were those numbers would go right back up. "Not rushing off to any portholes?" the Reman asked. His eyes were hidded behind some heavily shaded visor, to protect his eyes from the brightness. "You know your way around a hydrospanner well enough. What brought you into the Alliance?" May as well kill a few moments.

[ Avi Moz | Shuttlebay, Soteria ]It wasn't easy to find that sweet spot where people wouldn't bother but still get drunk and tell secrets. Avi was naturally talented at the first part, but had been forcing herself to work on the second bit. She wasn't making many friends on the upperdecks which helped her popularity below. "Seen one wang-fight, seen them all," she said with a friendly smirk. "And me? I just so love the navy." A shit-eating grin and a sloppy salute. Others joined for money, others adventure, but their had to be those who were bought in for the cause, who wanted some kind of duty to do. She offered a hand. "Avi Moz." Isaiah Quinn (Javik)

[NPC - Specialist Javik - Shuttlebay, Soteria ] For a moment, Javik believed that he had miscalculated in his decision to engage the Bolian in conversation. Though, her reply had been one he hadn't been expecting. She didn't seem brainwashed by a sense of duty. Javik was certainly familiar with the concept of blind devotion. His own people had been guilty of it for years with the Romulans. It was somewhat refreshing to come across someone who clearly wasn't blindly devoted for a change. She smiled and gave a mocking salute. Javik continued to stare at her with a hint of wonder. "I am Javik," he replied simply. He studied her a bit longer, making certain that he was correct in his assumptions. "You are a Bolian, correct?" he asked. He only had a small pool of comparison, but she was definitely different that the Bolians he'd met before. "It is strange. I thought all of your people's speech was... annoyingly nauseating."
