[ MCPO Ozu Saya - Security Node - S4] ' Behave yourself,' Saya called to Mott in one last mothering moment just before they entered the turbolift. ' That boy is precocious,' she said once the turbolift doors had closed. ' We met him while visiting another planet. He tried to pickpocket a friend. But he grows on one.' Like a fungus, she added silently to herself in amusement. Saya lifted one shoulder in a shrug. As they exited the turbolift on S4 and entered the tiny domain of Intelligence, Saya gestured around the small work space. ' The department is quite limited, though the captain did have things redecorated recently. And it's cramped.
There's Commander Matthew Harmon, of course, the department head, and his aide Ensign Chloe Hudson. There are a couple of other people, but I'm not familiar with them. Our departments don't crossover very often.' [Ensign Chloe Hudson - Intelligence Office]With Commander Harmon missing in action, and Bav, thanks to Kaya Som, known to be a mole for the Nyberite Alliance, Chloe was the only one actually working in Front Ear's Intelligence department at the moment. She'd heard from Mabel that Starfleet was apparently sending a replacement. Even if Matthew somehow got himself free he was going to be a in a load of trouble most likely. At least with him gone she got to occupy his office, which however crappy was still better than the sorry excuse of a bullpen out front. As she was diligently analysing the latest intelligence reports from Nyberr, the grumpy old Andorian Petty Officer Bav came in and let her know the Master Chief was there with the new recruit. An Ensign like herself. It was strange to be the one in charge. Stranger still not to have Matthew around. She'd gotten so used to, and reliant on his presence. She felt lost and overwhelmed, not to mention heartbroken at the thought he may have been killed, or at least never see freedom again. If only she could have been there to talk him out of whatever stupid plan he'd thought up.
She got up and made her way to the cramped front room and stood behind what counted as the reception desk. The Intelligence Office was essentially a glorified supply closet. The front door had a small reception area and then to the side of it was a small bullpen area with a cramped desk in the corner and another slightly larger one in the middle of the room that counted as a conference table. "Ensign Enola, I presume?" Chloe asked in a flat tone, her usually bubbly personality seemingly absent. "I'm Ensign Hudson. Acting Chief of Intelligence I guess."

"Small department," Enola repeated and nodded. She preferred that to a team with many people among whom it became confusing. Small and compact. When they arrived, she looked at the young woman, who had apparently already positioned herself. "You're right, Ensign," she replied, nodding again. If she got a stripe of latinum for every nod today, she would soon be able to finance her own moon from it. ____________________________________________________________

She didn't know Commander Harmon well, but the young woman had worked closely with him for some time. It must be difficult for her. ' Indeed. I'm giving the ensign a tour as things are quiet,' Saya said. ' We really should see about finding you a larger space,' she added mildly. Saya knew she'd go mad if she'd had to work in such cramped quarters all the time. Her brow wrinkled slightly as she considered a logistical issue. ' I...am not certain how you have been handling this, Ensign Hudson. Are you responsible for the department's duty roster, or shall I amend it to add Ensign Enola?' Ordinarily the department head would make the roster to be approved by the XO, but with both of them gone, Saya wasn't certain where the responsibility lay, especially since Chloe was an ensign herself. It might be odd for her to make the roster. ---------- Tag Matthew Harmon (Chloe) and Enola

[Sample M-240385J-3 - Front Ear - Deck 20 Conduit]
Space suddenly opened up before it, and with a grateful shudder it squeezed from the tight enclosure it had been traversing. Stretching its stalk and shaking its leaves, it continued on, following the warm vibrations beneath the cold surface once more. As before, it reached a point where the heat suddenly increased, and pressed itself against the source. But this time, there was something in the way. Tendrils scraped across the smooth, unnatural surface until they found tiny cracks. The heat was more tangible through those cracks. The source must lay beyond. It dug its tendrils into the cracks, shuddering in pain as slivers were ripped away by the edges. But within moments they caressed the source of the heat and the previously felt pleasant sensation rippled through it. Yes... that made it better. Its roots wrapped firmly around the source, leaves stretching to their extent before hanging loosely from its stalk, enjoying the warmth and sensation to the fullest. All across Deck 20, lights began to flicker, and the sealed doors to the secured science lab slid open. [PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Science Labs]It had always been strange to Jov that so many telepathic species didn't use their abilities as freely as Betazoids, especially when it was possible to communicate telepathically without prying into each others' thoughts. Granted, that was more difficult, as it required sufficient mental blocks to remain in place at all times, but for a species as practiced in meditations and mental control as the Vulcans, she assumed it would be much easier than it would be for Betazoids, who were far more open and free-flowing as a culture. Regardless, that was far from the point at the moment. They returned to the corridor and stepped into the next lab, and this time she felt the presence it lingered long enough for her to at least begin to trace it. "It's... above us..." she stated in confusion, brow furrowing as she lifted her gaze to the ceiling. That was weird, as she normally couldn't feel anyone that wasn't on the same deck as her. "I can't tell how far, though." The longer she could feel the presence in her mind, the more uneasy she became about it. It didn't feel like there were thoughts accompanying it, like a stranger standing in the corner of a room not saying a word. Swallowing back her nerves, she lowered her gaze to the samples around them, and resumed their search. But she couldn't prevent the chill that swept across her skin that had nothing to do with the temperature. [ T’Laara - Deck 26] T’Laara raised her eyes to the metal ceiling in turn, though of course, there was nothing to see. Whatever the telepathic presence was, it clearly wasn’t normal. And that meant it was worth investigating, however unnerving the prospect might be. “You said something earlier about not believing in coincidences. Perhaps we should look for the source of it.” After all, they were currently getting nowhere in the search for the plant. “I still do not see the missing sample.” While she had not given up on finding it so easily, surely something that was in their minds was priority. It may even end up being connected. She started to walk back out of the lab and to the turbolift. Jovireh Velal

[Ensign Chloe Hudson - Intelligence Office]"Yes, it is," Chloe said almost defensively as Enola pointed out the departments size. She wasn't sure what to make of the new arrival. It was curious that there was another Romulan, Front Ear must be the unit with the highest proportion of Romulan officers in Starfleet.
"Not much use for a larger space when there's only Bav and I. And Enola," she replied to Saya sadly, her mind again being reminded of Matthew. "Yes, I'm responsible. I'll do it," she said, again almost defensively when the Master Chief asked if she should organise the duty roster. The situation was ambiguous, but Chloe was feeling defensive. She'd been putting in all the work and effort required to keep the department running herself since Matthew had been missing, if she could do that she could certainly handle a duty roster.

[ CPO Kaya Som | The tubes ]S'Riia asked what could crush vital power conduit and Kaya, still closely inspecting the damage, shook her head. "No idea... Really weird." S'Riia was right. For a station this size, chomping this stretch of power conduit was mighty specific. It had to be related to the lab sample that had walked "There's nothing else damaged... " she narrated as she inspected the nearby systems. Then Engineering responded. Fournier here.""The conduit's busted. When was the last access to this area?" "Three months ago," came the reply. "Alright. I need to speak to Chief Ozu," Kaya replied. "The chief's not up here. I'll patch you in."A little chirp of the comm badge indicated Kaya now had the Head of Engineering's ear. "Chief Ozu, Som and PO S'Riia here. We're on Deck 26 Jeffries tubes, section 72 just before junction 26A - we're looking into the science labs power outage. We're sitting here staring at a half meter of power conduit casing that's been physically crushed or collapsed. The actual conduit is exposed in some places. The cover was sealed, there's no indication of any other damage. Sending an image to Engineering. It'll have to be bypassed and replaced." What to do to fix it wasn't nearly as interesting as what had caused the problem. They'd have to run all downstream conduit by hand to make sure there were no other damaged sections. That sort of action hadn't exactly gone well for her recently. However, the Vulcan was right. Too many strange things were happening in too short of a time for them to not be connected somehow. Following T'Laara out of the lab and towards the turbolift, she tapped her com badge. =A="Velal to S'Riia. The missing sample isn't on this deck. T'Laara and I have both detected an unknown telepathic presence nearby, we're heading up to try and locate it."=A= If only she could estimate approximately how far above them the presence was, it would make the search much easier. But it was still too foreign for her to get an accurate reading.

[ T’Laara - Turbolift, Deck 26 -> 23] With Velal following, T’Laara entered the turbolift. “Deck 23,” she directed, not wanting to go too far at once and overshoot it. They could now either eliminate the decks in between and keep going, or would know that the source of the telepathic presence was somewhere in the area they had passed. “If you can still sense its direction, we can start by narrowing down the area it must be in.” She paused, purposefully trying to feel the presence, when the turbolift halted. “It feels stronger to me, perhaps closer, but there’s still nothing that I am able to learn about it.” The sensation was completely alien to her. Enola raised her eyebrows a little. And when Commander Harmon is back, we'll just have to make ourselves a little thin, she thought, but did not mention it. She decided in the academy, to keep her hands off psychology and deal only with intelligence, but she noticed the voice, or rather the pitch of the ensign's voice. "Who else works in the department besides you and Harmon?" she asked to prepare herself for how thin they would really have to make themselves after Harmon's return. _____________________________

' Petty Officer 2nd Class Jovireh Velal is en route to Deck 23' Ryah tapped her combadge again and said, ' Melihn to Velal. I need you to check the secure science lab on Deck 20. They've had some kind of breach. It may be nothing, but we don't want to take chances.' ---------- Tag Jovireh Velal [Ensign Chloe Hudson - Intelligence Office]"Yes, it is," Chloe said almost defensively as Enola pointed out the departments size.

_____________________________ [ MCPO Ozu Saya - Security Node - Deck S4] Saya wasn't entirely sure what to make of Chloe's tone. She wasn't great at understanding human emotions, though she could guess that the ensign was upset or unhappy over the loss of her boss. It was an almost universal sentiment aboard the station as far as Saya knew. The conversation was interrupted by the call from Kaya, and Saya was pleased to hear her voice. Another 'lost' officer who had, thankfully, returned. ' Acknowledged, Chief. I'd like to have a look at that myself. I'll be there shortly.' ' My apologies, Ensign Hudson. Please send me your updated roster at your earliest convenience,' Saya said with a nod to Chloe. ' Ensign Enola, we can make this part of our tour. We won't be able to take Mr. Moz back to the promenade, but I can send him on when we get to Deck 26.' ---------- Exit tag for Matthew Harmon (Chloe) Tag Enola Tag Kaya Som [Ensign Enola, Security Node] "The main thing is that he comes from the security node" replied Enola to the thing with the little Bolian and looked around again. Slowly I really think that I'm a burdock, she thought and obediently followed the bajovulcan woman after she had said goodbye to Miss Hudson with a very slight nod (which only came to light on a closer look).
When they came out where the Bolian was still sitting in his chair, Enola raised an eyebrow. "Mister Moz"

[ Mott Moz | Security Node ]After approximately ten hours of waiting, Ensign Enola and Chief Saya reappeared. Mr. Moz had been given a PADD to make the wait more bearable to both Mr. Moz and the security officer. At his name, Mott launched from the chair like a coiled spring released, returned the PADD to the desk, and fell in line with the two Starfleet officers. "Prophets guide you," he declared, having learned the phrase from the promenade hasperat vendor Apazi Fellin. Then he added slyly, "live long and pizza." Mott had learned of human pizza from The Traitor Thomas Jett and it ranked very high on the Bolian's young but distinguished palette. Enola , Ozu Saya

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Deck 26 Science Labs]Jovireh nodded in agreement, though she wasn't thrilled about the idea of searching for an unknown telepath. [SCPO Melihn Ryah - Main Security Office - Security Node] Ryah pursed her lips to one side, then replied, ' Acknowledged. I'll send security your way anyway. The chief sat back and briefly considered going herself, just to get out of the office, but staring at the stack of PADDs she still had to go through, she decided that she couldn't. We won't be able to take Mr. Moz back to the promenade, but I can send him on when we get to Deck 26.' [NPC - PO1 S'Riia - The Tubes, Front Ear Station ] What S'Riia heard from Kaya wasn't very encouraging. First of all, she had no idea what had caused this, but it also seemed that the damage was incredibly specific and localized. That seemed to suggest intent, meaning someone wanted this to happen. Yet, there didn't seem to be any indication that anyone had been in the area. Kaya's call to Engineering confirmed as much as no one had been in the area to conduct maintenance for weeks. S'Riia then heard her own badge chirp as Velal reported in. She stated that both she and T'Laara had detected a telepathic presence, and were chasing it down. "An intruder? Capable of eluding our scans?" she mused aloud and looked towards Kaya. =A= "Acknowledged. Let me know if you require additional support." =A="Are we missing something?" S'Riia asked aloud. "Can you think of any reason someone would target this conduit at this particular location?" If she could figure out why this conduit had been targeted perhaps they'd have a clue as to whom was behind this. "And... is there another target that would be equally appealing as this one?"

Jovireh Velal =A="Negative, ma'am."=A= A confused voice replied. =A="The lights started flickering, then the door opened. But no one has come through yet."=A=

It did feel like they were getting closer to it, but there was also... "It's getting stronger." That in itself was worrying and strange. "I've never known a telepath of any species that can increase their power so quickly." Was it a species Starfleet hadn't accounted for? How did someone of unknown origins even get on the station though? When another call came through, directing her to a security breach on Deck 20, she cast a nervous glance at the civilian beside her. =A="Acknowledged, Chief. There've been other signs of a possible intruder in the labs on Deck 26. PO S'Riia is with Chief Som investigating as well. Requesting additional backup to Deck 20."=A= After redirecting the turbolift to the new location, she turned her attention back to the Vulcan. "I'll leave it up to you if you want to join me or not. But if you do... Just stay behind me." This was certainly not how she had been expecting this day to go...

[Sample M-240385J-3 - Front Ear - Deck 20 Conduit]
This heat source faded far more rapidly than the first, the unnatural sensation fading with it. It needed to find another, more sustainable environment. The roots uncoiled from the cooling source, withdrawing from the now-distorted surface that had been blocking it. With an aggravated tremble, it continued onward. The smooth, unnatural surface was unpleasant to continue moving across, the dark and cold space becoming more and more cramped. It began to long for the soil it had Awoken in, but that was far behind it now. Its only hope was that it would find more somewhere else, and sometime soon.
As it had on Deck 26, the main power on Deck 20 failed completely, only to be restored moments later as the backup power relays kicked in. The scientists in the labs that were supposed to be secured stood together, staring uneasily at the gaping door, waiting to see if someone would enter or not.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Turbolift]She focused on the sensation as T'Laara spoke. It did feel like they were getting closer to it, but there was also... "It's getting stronger." But if you do... Just stay behind me." This was certainly not how she had been expecting this day to go... [ T’Laara - Turbolift] If this telepathic presence was so unusual, it was a definite indication that it was worth looking into, and that they going the right way. “I also do not know what it could be.” And that made her determined to find out. Close as she was, T’Laara clearly overheard the conversation through the other woman’s commbadge. It appeared that the telepath they were looking for may be in the secure labs, and connected to the missing plant after all. As for whether they would stay together, T’Laara was involved in this now, and had no intention of leaving until the situation was resolved. “I do not wish to leave until we discover what is happening. We are clearly getting closer to doing so, and I can still be of help. I will stay behind you,” she answered. The strange presence was, after all, in her mind as well. “Deck 20,” she instructed the computer, and the turbolift moved up again. When they arrived, she stepped back for Velal to go first, then followed close behind. Jovireh Velal
