[ LT Joshua Niles - Guest Lobby, Talor Prime ]Well, in the end there had been no need to go fishing for the Commander and for Lieutenant Rin. Which was a good thing, for even though he was flight-qualified, there was no guarantee that Niles would be all too graceful at the controls of a thoroughly alien craft. It was not because he could stand at the helm if required that he was a master of that particular field. So, with that situation resolved, he made his way back to his rooms, where he did throw on some more formal clothes after a shower that would have used up several days' worth of hot water ration on ship or on the station. When he got dressed, he certainly did not dress formally. Instead, he had gone into his somewhat more stylish civilian clothes and he was wearing a dark grey silk shirt with a mandarin collar, and dark blue slacks and jacket, and a low pair of boots. Nothing that screamed 'formal wear' nor 'entirely casual' either. And the only thing that belonged on a uniform, was his commbadge tucked in his jacket's inner pocket. And now, he was on his way to attend a function put up by L'Sho, of all people... Getting to the lobby had been easy, and he found himself needing a deep breath. Chief Velal was going to be taking over the department. Answering to a non-com was... unusual for him. He thought he'd gotten used to it as an Ensign in the past, but it still didn't feel right. Granted, he had screwed up royally, even when trying to do the right thing. And now, he was paying for it... but at least he had been given an opportunity to do his penance elsewhere, by someone who'd agreed to stick his neck out for him. But, that didn't mean he couldn't be gracious about it. And, it turned out, it meant paying a visit to the toga-clad Commander Ellis, who was chatting with Mister Vulbrix and Chief Velal. "Good evening."

[Ensign Ic Arbrell — Guest Lobby, Talor Prime]
Ic had never been on a proper vacation before, but he paid good attention when his mother did. To be fair, every little jaunt from ship to base to planet was a vacation for her. She called their journeys as such in private rooms, while citing business trip if it came up in conversation or expense logs. She was half right both ways, given the reason they traveled at all, so the quiet child never contradicted. He simply paid attention. From the comfort of an unmade bed, he listened to her go down the list of essentials each time she packed. Like all her rules, her always-and-nevers, it stuck with him, the method and routine, the counts of socks and underthings. And so, he’d kept to the same when he packed for this trip.
The last thing on the list had always seemed impractical and silly to him, and yet he’d found it inexorably tempting tonight: Always bring one thing you wouldn’t dare to be seen in at home.
He’d almost forgotten he’d packed it, for it came with him more as superstition than actual clothes, until he went rifling through the bag to rearrange his overly casual wardrobe into the illusion of something nice. The purple-shifting-green sheer draped over black silk teased through his dour mood. This was ridiculous. That Ic even owned a drapey backless dress snapped at his self-consciousness from the moment he bought it. It continued, until Ic relented and slipped it on.
It was easier to find things in an unfamiliar place when everyone else knew where to go, especially when arriving a little bit late. The Betazoid tracked them easily (guiltily), and snuck into the lobby when it seemed that no one was paying attention— no one except maybe ha’la T’Rok, whose job it was to do just that. Ic offered the bodyguard a quick glance and shy smile, a subtle gesture of continued gratitude for his help earlier, before his attention slid toward the Ambassad— oh Deities look at him.
“Good evening, Ambassador, sir,” he said lightly, pinkening in the cheeks from safety on the sidelines of the lobby. “You’re very kind to have us for dinner. I’m Ic— um. Ensign Ic Arbrell. Thank you so much, this is all so lovely.” Lovely lovely lovely.
Ic could sense readily, however, that he was not the only one with a similar reaction to L’Sho, and his eyes, still probably a little bit red, flicked toward teal and then to the ground. Maybe this was a bad idea. It all felt like (— the proverbial eggshell-walking, if others were right) a really bad idea. He focused on Myker’s thoughts of sunset and of home until the older Betazoid swept them away, and left Ic wishing he’d never listened to his mother in his life.

[SCPO Jovireh Velal - Talor Prime - Guest Lobby]Accepting the glass of wine that Felicity handed her, she nodded with a bright smile. "It's been nice and relaxing." Jov took a small sip of the wine, the half bottle she had already drank enough to ease the nerves she would have otherwise felt at the start of such an event. Her gaze swept around the room as a few more people entered, and her expression faltered slightly when she saw Shavan talking to the Ambassador. Oh no... Jov knew that look. Of all the Talorians in the room... She didn't know L'Sho well enough to know how he handled his personal life, but as the former Primary was the host of the banquet, she could only hope that he would be honor-bound to stay for the duration. That gave her some time to figure out how to warn Shavan. Felicity's comment about meeting a giant squid was enough to pull her out of her thoughts, and she turned to the other woman with a look of surprise. "Really? What was it like?" The anthropologist in her surged to the surface, pushing away her concern over the interaction occurring across the room. [ LT Joshua Niles - Guest Lobby, Talor Prime ][...] And, it turned out, it meant paying a visit to the toga-clad Commander Ellis, who was chatting with Mister Vulbrix and Chief Velal. "Good evening."
[Felicity Ellis - Guest Lobby]Felicity was glad to hear that Velal's day had been relaxing; they were on shore leave, someone should get some peace. "It was intense," she replied to the woman's question regarding meeting the giant squid. Her day had not been quite as chilled out in comparison. "We learned later that the creature is called a kret'kala, and ancient. Intelligent, too. It mistook Lieutenant Rin's swimming for distress and attempted to "rescue" him." She held up one hand to make quotation marks, unable to hide the grin no longer. "It then tried to return the Lieutenant to my boat. For a minute there we thought we might be on the menu."It was then that Niles approached, no doubt catching the end of Felicity's story. "Good evening, Lieutenant." Her wine glass in hand, she gestured toward Niles as she continued filling Velal in on the afternoon's shenanigans. "Mr. Niles here had a decent view of the First Contact. Including an eyeful of Mr. Rin's shiny speedo, no doubt."As she chatted, she was sure to keep the Ambassador in her view. Members of her crew had approached, and it was part of her job to ensure that any slight or offense caused would be dealt with as quickly and smoothly as possible. There was already a list containing over one hundred items detailing offenses committed against the Ambassador and his people since his transfer to Front Ear. The Talorian was also dangerous, and capable of a great many things. Her people had not had the briefings she had. She held her breath as Shavan engaged, as Vulbrix offered an apology, and Arbrell approached with all of his usual awkward charm. She took another sip of her wine and returned her attention to her colleagues.

{Quotes: Shavan, Myker, Ic} [ Shavan Th’zhaar - Guest Lobby] Shavan drew closer to the Ambassador, a small smile curving the corners of his lips as L’Sho responded agreeably enough. “It would be my pleasure.” He took the offered glass of wine from the attendant, considering what he had heard about interacting with Talorians. Admittedly that wasn’t much, but they did seem to like formality… and though he knew who he was talking to, the reverse may not be true. Shavan definitely would have remembered if they’d actually talked before. “I’m Lieutenant Shavan Th’zhaar,” he added a brief introduction. He raised the wine glass to his lips, taking a slow sip while his gaze lingered on L’Sho’s attractive features. [ Ensign Myker Vulbrix - Talor Prime - Guest Lobby] [...] Myker entered the guest lobby easily spotting the familiar faces of those part of his crew. He had noted that the commander had dressed in the formal dress of the Talorian's. A bold move for anyone really, wearing the traditional attire may have been a sign of respect but if she couldn't uphold the traditions it may have been seen as taunting. Something that they really ought nothing to be encouraging given the Ambassador already disliked them. "Evening Commander, Chief" he greeted both the women before moving on to greet their host. "Greetings Ambassador." Myker tried to take in as much information in the customs of Talorian's but with his mind very much on the ellipse and the earlier incident with the kret'kala it was hard to recall everything. As long as he didn't offend then it was a win in his book. "I would like to express my thanks for extending the invitation to us and my apologies for my earlier words." he said simply. His tone remained steady, betraying nothing. He'd not intended to create greater hostility and maybe now was a good a time as any to smooth that over. He'd seen Shavan had been there and so swiftly left not wishing to disrupt any conversation between the two but still fulfilling his obligations. The view from the room was beautiful and the colours painted in the sky with the setting suns were captivating. Myker couldn't remember the last time he'd seen a sunset as wonderful as this one. It was home on Betazed most likely. That thought brought on that familiar longing for home which he quickly sidelined in his mind so it didn't overtake him. [ Ensign Ic Arbrell — Guest Lobby, Talor Prime] [...] It was easier to find things in an unfamiliar place when everyone else knew where to go, especially when arriving a little bit late. The Betazoid tracked them easily (guiltily), and snuck into the lobby when it seemed that no one was paying attention— no one except maybe ha’la T’Rok, whose job it was to do just that. Ic offered the bodyguard a quick glance and shy smile, a subtle gesture of continued gratitude for his help earlier, before his attention slid toward the Ambassad— oh Deities look at him.“Good evening, Ambassador, sir,” he said lightly, pinkening in the cheeks from safety on the sidelines of the lobby. “You’re very kind to have us for dinner. [Ha'la T'Rok - Guest Lobby]T'Rok's eyes were on everyone, and yet never seemed to move. He noted the ones who avoided the Ambassador, the ones who kept exchanges brief with him, and the ones who monopolised his attention by speaking at longer length. The one he had spoken with earlier at the hot springs, the one of interesting colour, was displaying subtle signs of attraction. Those were the ones that posed the greatest threat to such a powerful figure as former Primary L'Sho. Assassination attempts had a very high success rate when the target was post-coital. The big Talorian took a step closer to his charge. When Ensignic Arabell looked his way and smiled... T'Rok almost lost concentration. He had memorised Ensignic's name, along with all of the things he had said to him on their way back from the Springs, but he had never expected the chu'ta to remember of his existence, least of all look directly at him, acknowledging him, with a smile. It was not often that a ha'la's presence was noticed, let alone acknowledged. He gave Ensignic Arabell a small bow in return. [Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Guest Lobby]L'Sho inclined his head as Lieutenant Shavan Th'zhaar introduced himself, appreciating both the formality and the boldness. Normally those in his company waited until he asked before offering their titles and names. He found that tiresome. So, too, did he find apologies. He remained quiet as one of the individuals from the Overlook earlier - not-Lieutenant Niles - approached. The Ambassador gave a nod in response to his greeting, but said nothing to the apology. There seemed no point, as the male did not wait for it. Talorians did not apologise. When in the company of peers, they spoke their minds, and most Talorian minds were practical and their opinions straightforward. It was rare for them to say something they did not mean. Another unknown entered, late, and approached. It was the guests' prerogative to arrive at a time suitable to them, and thus L'Sho was unable to hold tardiness against this Ensign. At least he had arrived prior to the second sun disappearing behind the horizon, and had saved the Ambassador the effort of learning his name. With that, he stepped forward and raised a hand and voice. "I am gratified by your company tonight, at this banquet I host in your honour. Valued guests, be seated."He started toward the low table himself, intent on his seat at the head. "Lieutenant Shavan Th'zhaar, I would be pleased if you would sit next to me. I would like to learn about you and your people."

[SCPO Jovireh Velal - Talor Prime - Guest Lobby]"Evening, Lieutenant," she returned Josh's greeting with a friendly smile. She knew the man had a hard time with her taking over the department, and had been somewhat relieved when Commander Taggert told her that a temporary transfer had been approved for the officer. The two of them had butted heads at least once every time they had worked together, and Jovireh hadn't been looking forward to the transition period of him getting used to her being the boss. Though she was thankfully spared from that train of thought as Felicity continued with her story. Her grin broadened at the mental image that was being painted for her. "Now I feel like I missed all the fun." Although, while she would have loved to witness the scene first hand... Jov wouldn't have enjoyed having to deal with it. At least everyone came out of it unharmed. Still, she wasn't sure she'd be able to resist teasing Lieutenant Rin about it the next time she saw him. The Ambassador called for their attention, and Jovireh obediently moved to one of the fluffy cushions at the table. She was a bit relieved to see Ic had arrived, and hoped that he would be able to distract Shavan from his dangerous new interest. That hope was quickly dashed, however, when L'Sho asked Shavan to sit with him. This was going to be an interesting meal...

[ Ensign Myker Vulbrix - Talor Prime - Guest Lobby] The Betazoid had apologized, not for the sake of Talorian. He knew they didn't care for them and were rather similar to his own race in their bluntness. They were open, frank and didn't speak words they didn't mean. It was a candor that many species lacked and Myker began to realise how much he'd changed having learnt to be 'polite' rather than totally honest. Then again he didn't have very functional telepathy either so he wasn't sure how close he came to actually being Betazoid. He'd apologized to ease his own mind, it worked and he didn't wait for a response? Why would he? L'Sho seemed like the type that the more he spoke, the more one grew to dislike him and so it was better not to give him the opportunity. Myker chose to find a spot that had no one in close range, he wasn't feeling conversational beyond what would be expected at such an occasion. His attention was on the setting suns, the breathtaking image that was painted in the sky. Sunsets were something he always enjoyed and they had a calming effect, which he'd certainly needed to get through this evening. Myker was spared any further conversation by the ambassador's announcement which had everyone heading to find seats at the low take. Myker was aware of the ambassador's intent to sit at the head with Shavan next to him. There was definitely something interesting developing there. The Betazoid found a seat some ways down the table. He was suddenly aware of how little he'd learned about Talorian's. What would be considered appropriate and what wouldn't? What would offend and what was safe. He wasn't even sure how best to sit on the cushion provided. The communications officer came to decision it would serve him best simply to follow those around him.

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Guest Lobby] Shavan took another drink of wine while Myker Vulbrix approached to greet the Ambassador, then moved on. His antennae twitched back slightly in the direction of the passage leading to the rooms, and a moment later a familiar voice gave a different greeting. He spared a brief glance at Ic, unable to resist noticing what he was wearing ( oh wow), but said nothing as he turned and decidedly fixed his attention on L’Sho. His smile widened just a fraction at the request to sit next to him. “Yes, of course.” Inwardly pleased, Shavan followed L’Sho toward the head of the table, stopping at the cushion next to him and taking a seat. They seemed to be of somewhat like mind, in that Talorians did not care for unnecessary talking, and Shavan tended to choose his words carefully. As such, he sought to continue the conversation without saying anything to make him lose interest. “What would you like to know?”L'Sho

[Ensign Ic Arbrell — Guest Lobby, Talor Prime]
Oh. The glance, because that was all it was, seemed to strike him through the chest. He could feel his pulse run thick throughout his body, could hear it in his eyes, feel it in his ears, and imagined that was what it felt like being hit by phaser fire set to kill. Wow.
Ic was no stranger to keeping things professional. He had to maintain the demeanor every day they found themselves on duty together, and he was ultimately pretty proud of his ability to pretend everything was perfectly normal. In the interest of discretion, he never expected Shavan to acknowledge him in public, least of all around commanders and ambassadors. The importance of decorum in improving their reputation and relationship with the Talorians was not lost on the ensign, and no one in the galaxy, probably, was more charming than Shavan. If anyone could win over Ambassador L’Sho, it would be him. And Ic swore he wasn’t going to interfere with his Lieutenant’s good time.
That felt like a bad idea for Shavan, though. And it felt like punishment for Ic, for his earlier mistakes. Only one of them deserved it.
He wanted to reach out to ha’la T’Rok, to tell the bodyguard— well, he didn’t know what, just something— but Ic just held his breath and watched them all walk by to the banquet. A sub-psychic nudge to Jovireh signaled another unnamed something, but her without full telepathy, he didn't know if she could tell.
On the way to the table, he hung back until the beautiful men were all at one end, displayed like gem-cut jewels, so that he could place himself at the other, a little smoldering coal. He pulled at the thin hem of a sheer sleeve, coaxing it past his wrists as if that could hide him any better than his folded limbs could do. (He was still self-conscious about it, but ultimately it seemed it was a good thing the side slits of this dress went all the way up to the waist.)
He hoped he was going to be able to eat any of this food. Probably not, but seaweed was slightly better than starving.

[Felicity Ellis - Guest Lobby]Quietly, she felt like under different circumstances, she would agree with Jovireh. Had she been elsewhere when the scene with the kret'kala went down, she likely would have been disappointed. But one shouldn't let the strict truth interfere with a good dinner party story. When Niles commented that it was more of Rin than he'd want to see, Felicity chuckled. "Imagine having a front row seat," she returned, then shook her head, amusement still evident in her voice. "At least he wasn't entertaining the local habit of undress." She took a sip of her wine, which was sweet but also had quite the powerful punch in aftertaste, and added, "Still, I've had worse things waved in my face."Jesting aside, that was certainly true. Automatically, her gaze sought out the formerly airborne Lieutenant, attempting to ensure that he wasn't feeling any awkward after-effects. When the Ambassador announced that it was time to eat, Felicity with glass in hand, made her way toward the table and lowered herself carefully, trying to avoid standing on one of the strips of her robe and causing another scene. She ended up sitting Lotus pose on the cushion, which had some bounce to it. The warm floor was pleasant against her bare feet and despite the unknown of the meal they were about to face, she found that she was hungry. "This should be most interesting," she said, obviously determined to make the best of things.

“What would you like to know?” [Ambassador L'Sho, former Primary of Talor, former Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada - Guest Lobby]The Ambassador's soft glow of a gaze was all for Shavan Th'zhaar as he lowered himself gracefully into his seat, and answered his query. "Everything."L'Sho always wanted to know everything, and always took all there was to give. But then, a rare, and wry, grin. "But I will begin small." There was some movement caught in his periphery, and the Ambassador knew it was his ha'la without needing to look. He raised a hand and waved it, dismissing the other Talorian. With absolutely no facial reaction, T'Rok sidestepped and moved away from L'Sho's side. He settled in a seat further down toward the other end. It was clear that his Kam'Do was occupied and did not require his immediate presence. The monks began to file back into the room, each carrying trays of plates of an ice-blue colour. They sparkled brightly in the flickering candlelight. The servers stood in a perfectly straight line, arranged before the long table. "Guests," L'Sho began, voice raised again as he shifted his attention from Shavan to the rest of the room at large, "Our first course. This is one of our most popular dishes: I present you all with spiced let'ki[fn]Sea creature, not unlike Earth's eel; a delicacy served boiled and with garal.[/fn], served on a bed of garal[fn]Seaweed.[/fn] with a ramba[fn]Red alcoholic liquid; sweet with a slight burn.[/fn] reduction." In perfect unison, the monks stepped forward and placed the dish before each diner. They then busied themselves with topping up everyone's glasses. "Kamara d'k'tra, let."[fn]Traditional meal blessing.[/fn] He carefully picked up the two-pronged utensil, and speared some of the already sliced let'ki. "Do tell me of your people's social interests, Lieutenant. Do they enjoy events such as these, or do their proclivities lay elsewhere?"

{Spoiler}{Quotes} [SCPO Jovireh Velal - Talor Prime - Guest Lobby]"Evening, Lieutenant," she returned Josh's greeting with a friendly smile.
Tag Felicity Ellis Joshua Niles [ LT Joshua Niles - Guest Lobby, Talor Prime ]"This is almost enough to put me off from ever requesting leave ever again," Niles replied with a wry grin. Every time he'd taken some voluntary time off since he had arrived at the Front Ear and the Mac, something had happened. And in two of those cases, actually accepting to be recalled to duty had disastrous effects on his career. And last time, he'd gotten his leg amputated. This time, he had watched as what could've been the centerpiece of a seafood banquet look as though it was about to eat two of his shipmates. That would have not particularly look good on his personnel file... and he was not particularly looking forward to explaining that he was not a marine biologist, and could not really do anything as a guest on a sovereign, non-affiliated planet that might offend the locals... "And that was entirely more of Mister Rin than I ever wanted to see," he added. But this time, his grin was genuine. It had been amusing, in retrospect. But at the time, he had been at a complete loss. He was a tactical officer, not a marine biologist! Though, the invitation to find seats and partake in the dinner being made, Niles considered the table. He hardly cared where he sat, truth be told. He just hoped that it would not cause offence when he would scan food before eating it... the last thing he needed was another interaction with his cocktail of medications... Felicity Ellis Myker Vulbrix Jovireh Velal Quietly, she felt like under different circumstances, she would agree with Jovireh.

It also wasn't an entirely far fetched notion that the Ambassador would poison some of them if his dislike was anything to go by. The idea of different foods didn't bother him in the slightest, it was something to learn from and grow from. The ambassador soon announced the first course, there was a definite aroma in the air from the meal but Myker couldn't say it was particularly unique. When the monk set a plate in front of him, Myker nodded a small thanks before the server busied himself with something else. [ Shavan Th’zhaar - Guest Lobby] Noticing the strong and graceful way the Talorian moved, and the wry grin that followed everything, Shavan’s own intrigue and satisfaction grew. Of course, he was at least somewhat aware of who he was talking to; aware of the complicated diplomatic situation, that L’Sho was powerful, and potentially dangerous, and that many at this table seemed to be avoiding involvement with him. That only made him want to do it more. Copying L’Sho’s way of handling the utensil, he took a bite of the let’ki. It was, indeed, delicious. Meanwhile, he considered an answer to the question, aware of the audience and other eyes on them. While his feelings toward home, and both sides of his heritage were complicated, there remained a strong pride in where he had come from. “My people enjoy fine food and each other’s company.” His dark eyes lingered on the Talorian’s at the last part. ”On Orion, social events involve a lot of dancing, passion… and happen often, yes.”L'Sho

There wasn't much to be said after the call to sit down came, and as luck would have it, it turned out one of the nearest available seats was near the Commander's. Well, this was a social event all right, but it was still on Talor Prime, and as L'Sho's guest, both factors that actually rankled to some degree. But, maybe it was misplaced pride, he wasn't about to let the former Primary see him sweat or run off. No way in hell. However, seeing how there were no chairs but instead cushions around a low table, Niles immediately felt like doing just that. Or, at least, hobble away as fast as the pain in his leg would allow him... and he found himself cursing having left his cane behind. This was going to be less than fun all right. In fact, it took him what felt like nearly an eternity to lower himself to the cushion, and his bum leg was extended under the table, which at least was wide enough he wasn't likely to be playing footsies with someone else. Then, the first course was announced. Seafood. Of course it would have to be seafood, and he found that a glass of wine appeared past his shoulder just after his food had hit the table. Well, time to start... but safety first. His small, single-purpose scanner came from his pocket and he waved it over every component, rewarded every time with a silent green light. Nothing that wouldn't play nice with his meds. Though, with what Vulbrix said, Niles had to shake his head. "Let's just say I've learned to be a little more... circumspect about food and drink since I was accidentally poisoned on shore leave." Myker VulbrixSoft to everyone else at the table.

[Felicity Ellis - Guest Lobby]"Oh, that's nice," Felicity responded in an equally as flat, deadpan tone at Vulbrix's assurances that they, indeed she would be missed if poisoned. "Maybe you could do my eulogy, Ensign. That'd be lively, I'm sure."It was very difficult to keep a straight face, but she did manage. Another great challenge was the sight of Joshua Niles scanning his food. Food that his hosts had prepared for him. With a tricorder. Swiftly, she turned her head away. If she pretended not to see it, perhaps she wouldn't have to get involved. She could only hope that L'Sho was too wrapped up in chatting to Lieutenant Th'zhaar to notice the grave insult that was unfolding at his ridiculously low dinner table. Felicity enjoyed a bet every now and then, and to be sure her money would go on the Ambassador tossing them all out for the offense, and perhaps sentencing Niles to naked death by lake monsters. Felicity had no idea if that was a thing, though it sounded very Talorian to her. Her face was turning a shade of red and even she wasn't quite sure if that was second-hand embarrassment, barely controlled mirth, or the wine. The latter being her favourite part of the meal so far. With dainty motions, she split part of a let'ki and took a bite. She chewed, then chewed some more, taking her time to decide whether or not she liked it. By the time she swallowed she decided that the wine was still the winner.
