[ Chief Ozu Saya - Kerelia - Mountains near LZ-2] //Chief Engineer’s Log, Kerelia, 0800// We have been on Kerelia for the last three days mapping the passes through these mountains and cataloging the local flora and fauna. It has been deemed too dangerous to attempt to map this region by runabout due to the volatile nature of the wind shears over the mountains.
Our team consists of a mix of Starfleet, civilians and the Sivaoans, who have been integral to the success of our mission thus far. They have guided most aspects of the establishment of our camp and keeping our impact on the natural habitat minimal as we continue our cataloging. I was skeptical of their methods when they first came to the station, but have found the entire trip rather restful with the limited technology we’ve brought.
Our camp is at an elevation of 5,197 feet, cool, but not overly so for comfort for most of us. The teams range higher, of course, in their exploration. We plan to spend two more days in this location before moving to the other side of the range.
Commodore Perry has accompanied us to observe and remains mostly in camp. I do appreciate that if he does not have the skills required to help with our tasks that he at least doesn’t seem inclined to interfere or countermand my orders. My own skills are also not perfectly suited to our mission here; I allow the scientists to ply their expertise as they require.
One event of interest, I woke this morning to find a small pile of fruits outside my tent. There is no indication of where they came from.//End log//
{The Camp} The base camp is nestled in a level, stone clearing against a sheer cliff face approximately 50 feet high which curves gently to partially surround the camp. Their housing is a mix of small Starfleet prefab buildings and Sivaoan teepee-like structures made from poles gathered from already-fallen trees with layers of usefuls (large, versatile, brightly-colored pieces of fabric that are both warm and waterproof) tied around them. These structures can easily be struck and moved when needed. There is a large central campfire with a cooking surface and cauldron, used to make many of their meals; but they also have a camp stove and rations if gathering food from nature is too difficult. They do have a small replicator for emergency use of provisions or equipment. Biologists, geologists, etc. have whatever equipment they require to perform their duties.
[ Chief Ozu Saya, Left Ear to-Ennien, SilverTail to-Ennien] Saya stepped out of her tent and glanced around at the bustle of the camp. Their morning meal was cooking over the central campfire, the survey teams were gathering and checking their equipment - a model of Starfleet efficiency with a dash of unruliness lent by the brightly-colored Sivaoan tents. The Sivaoan biologist, SilverTail, waved her over from outside his own tent, so Saya detoured from her goal of breakfast to see what the biologist had to say. Greetings, SilverTail. I hope you’re well today. Unlike most others of his species, SilverTail was completely lacking in hair or whiskers. The temperatures on the mountain were quite cold for him, so he wore a couple of usefuls draped about his body, toga fashion. His face bore a deceptively perpetual grumpiness belied by his friendly tone as he answered. Very well, indeed, Chief. I simply wished to inform you that that fruit you found outside your tent is perfectly safe to eat. I delivered it to the pantry structure after my analysis. My thanks, SilverTail. I can’t imagine how it got there. Will you join me for breakfast? Certainly. I just need another moment to finish packing my satchel.Saya nodded and headed back for the ring of fallen logs around the campfire. Left Ear, being quite young still, had chosen to tie usefuls up in a tree as a hammock, what her people called a swagger-lair, to sleep. Now the healer, satchel slung across slim shoulders, shimmied down her tree, claws hooking into the bark as she climbed. She leapt down the last ten feet, her long tail balancing her as she crouched almost to all fours to absorb the impact of her landing. Left Ear headed for the cauldron full of breakfast, dished herself up a helping of the stew and sat on one of the log seats.

"The tree will be fine!" Kaya Som's alto cut through the dewy morning tranquility. She'd gotten up early to get a headstart on completing set up on improvements to the meteorological station and gotten into a disagreement with one of the Sivaoans who was called Longfoot. Kaya was standing there with a plasma torch in hand and goggles on her face, fully prepared to fasten a proper anchor to a massive tree trunk and Longfoot was holding up a rope.
"That may be, but a well-secured knot will work just as well."
"Right up until, I don't know, any wind or rain or fire or nibbling Tritters or any of the one-thousand ear-burrowing insect species down here come along."
Kaya slapped her bare arm, feeling the prickle of a bug crawling along her skin.
"Your people have asked for our counsel and if you don't plan to take it ..." Longfoot began, testily.
"Ha-de-zhi, this is not a diplomatic incident. It's just a bloody sensor..." Kaya lifted the goggles to the top of her heads so she could massage a headache that was forming between her eyes. She hated this camp. Take a break, Kaya, they said. Get away from it all, Kaya, they said.

[Charlie Fox - "Charlie's View", Mountains near LZ-2, 200 feet above Camp]
"The mythic shot."
Her voice was quiet, her eyes bright and watering from the sharp edge the cool breeze was whipping toward her. In front of her was a lightening sky as the morning reached its complete dawn. The sun was bathing the water with warmth and colour, and the clouds had parted in such a timely manner to provide her with what would no doubt be the best shot of the trip. Olsen, the spherical holorecoder and her constant companion, spun into action, capturing 180° angle imagery of this epic Kerelian sunrise, from atop this private viewing platform.
Charlie stood with her back to a gap in the side of the mountain, ignoring the still as-yet unexplored cave. Her gaze was only for the view in front of her. Having risen at a ridiculously ungodly hour in order to make the trek to the small ridge, she'd dressed warmly in lined, black leggings, hiking boots and a comfortable, over-sized sweater. Her hair was pulled back and high into a ponytail, away from her face, most of which was covered by a large pair of retro-looking sunshades. Her hands were on her hips as she surveyed everything before and below her, feeling, for a few short minutes, like she was on top of the world.
Eventually she moved closer to the edge and sat. She sucked in a deep, contented breath and let her legs dangle freely. Hundreds of feet below, Olsen had picked up some sign of movement amongst the ocean's spray and had taken off chasing some mystery behemoth beneath the waves. Her thoughts meandered and she became lost in them, happy to be away from the busy camp and all of the horrors associated with it for the morning.

[Commodore Calvin Perry - Meteorological Station]There was something relaxing about this adventure for Calvin. After the twin debacles of the joint exercises with the Nyberrite Alliance, and the award ceremony on the holodeck, there had been a lot of work for him to do opposite the brass. It was good to get away from it all and just spend some time in the outdoors. The Commodore was out on a morning walk, donning his uniform trousers and undershirt, as he came upon what seemed to be a small row at the meteorological station. He stood back, a short ways away, and watched.

[Camp - Kerelia, LZ2] If someone had told Leanna that she would be back on Kerelia rather than the delights of Caban VI with Jeffy, the Betazoid would of probably laughed at them. However this was her reality despite Jeffy's reassurances that she would love the jewelled caverns, rich oceans and having your every whim catered for and whilst it had been very tempting, she couldn't say no when the Bar was asked to supply a cook and supplies for the Fleet's return trip to the jungle planet below. It might not be everyone's preference but she didn't want a fancy vacation or become a third wheel to the great Jem Sparkles, who had seemingly bounced back from his grief over Rani to take himself of to the very exclusive resort. No doubt he would tell her all about it if and when he decided to return and with her parents taking the children to visit her cousins on Jubilee, nothing was stopping Leanna from volunteering herself rather than one of her staff. So here she was in the middle of the safer Landing Zone 2, cooking for Fleeters, other Civilians and of course the Sivaoans, creating one pot meals over the campfire or using the stove when required and she loved every minute of it. Cooking this way had been such a change of pace, along with forgoing a standard tent in order to use one built from usefuls by the Sivaoans. In fact she could be find in the Kitchen tent, chopping up fruit, along with some freshly made flatbreads to go along with the stew, that was already bubbling away on the fire. Her long hair was in braids and instead of her usual style of clothing had opted for a loose fitting off the shoulder colourful dress. It was both comfortable yet practical as she finished what she was doing and left the tent carrying a bowl of fruit and a plate of bread. " Morning Left Ear" she said as she placed the goods down and went to stir the stew.

[Camp - Kerelia, LZ2]
Jeliel squatted at the outskirts of the camp, an exotic piece of fruit he had forgotten the name of sat half-eaten clutched within one hand, it's juices slowing dripping down his wrist and dotting the ground below with its sticky sweetness, while the other hand tapped away at his latest entry into the PADD balancing dangerously across his knee. He had woken before dawn, as was usual for him, packed what few supplies he needed and got right to work. While the rest of the camp was still waking up and starting their day, he was busy cataloging various plant species along the edge of camp. First light saw low lying flowers bloom. Dew collected on the woody perennial shrubs, but due to the volatile wind few large trees or shrubs existed at this elevation, but what did exist had a hardy root system capable of worming its way into the various cracks and crevices along the mountain face. What currently held his interest was a bright green moss growing across the edge of the rock. One of the few green things at this height, this moss likely served as a food source for what animal life called this mountain home.
Taking another bite of the fruit before setting it down and wiping his sticky hand along the leg of his pants, he reached for the holorecorder that had been resting by his side and took a few photographs of the moss and its surroundings. At his side sat a collection kit; sample jars, a laser scalpel and an environmentally controlled case so that any samples taken could be kept alive to take back to the station for further study.

[ T’Laara - Outside Camp] As a civilian botanist T’Laara had joined the expedition to help catalog and study the flora of Kerelia. So far she had found it to be a refreshing change of scenery from the station and its seemingly endless string of troubles. This morning was no different. The young Vulcan had woken up early, and unable to go back to sleep, got up and took a walk in the area surrounding the campsite. She brought her tricorder and equipment for gathering samples, but at first she did not use it, simply enjoying the solitude and early morning sun. That was until some movement ahead caught her eye, and at the same moment she stepped on a loose stone, and tripped and fell to the ground. “Ugh.” She quickly sat up and attempted to brush off some dirt. “I am glad you are the only one who saw that.” she said haughtily, to a beetle perched on a nearby boulder. This vantage point allowed her to see something she had not while standing; an unusual blue growth near the underside of the boulder. “Fascinating.” she muttered, scrambling over to it and pulling out her equipment. With a sample of it stored away, T’Laara got to her feet and started to walk back towards the camp. Breakfast would be being prepared, but she took her time, keeping an eye out for anything else of interest. Tags open/anyone

tag Ozu Saya [ Chief Ozu Saya, Left Ear to-Ennien, SilverTail to-Ennien - Camp - Kerelia, LZ-2] Good morning, Leanna! Left Ear greeted cheerily. Pretty day, isn't it? She hopped back up from her seat to grab a piece of the flatbread the bar owner had brought, pausing for a quick full-body stretch that rolled from her ears to the tip of her tail. She wrapped said tail around her bowl to hold it as she ripped some bread off and scooped up some stew. Saya smiled at the usefulness of the extra-long, prehensile tail, wondering very briefly how much she would appreciate the extra appendage in engineering. She chose a variety of chunks of fruit and a piece of the bread and sat. Good morning, Leanna, Left Ear. Leanna, I must commend your creativity and skill with our meals. I am most impressed.SilverTail joined them a moment later, setting his heavy satchel next to the log near Saya before going to the fire to serve himself some stew. The Sivaoan biologist glanced around, noting that a few members of the team already seemed to be working. Your crew is quite eager to do their jobs, he commented. Indeed, I'm quite pleased with the progress we've made in this area. I'd like to focus on that forest there, Saya said, pointing west and down the slope where a significant area of large trees stood in defiance of the elevation and the wind. It could be seen even from their camp that many of the trees appeared to be growing in rather random directions other than straight up.

Lt. Isaiah Quinn - LZ-2, Kerelia] Even though he could see all of the potential for scientific research on this planet, Isaiah would fuss too much once this assignment was over. He had been up since before dawn looking at the reports that had been filed by the team of scientists. The botanists on the team, Ensign Jaliel and the civilian botanist, T'Laara, seemed to be making the most of their opportunity on the planet. Isaiah had been forced to make do with contributing towards the biological research, in particular a culture of insects that closely resembled Terran ants. Their reproduction seemed quite exceptional, but it was easily kept in check with what appeared to be an abbreviated life span. He was truly excited to see that some of the Engineering team, Petty Officer Som, in particular and one of the Sivaoans had started to work on the meteorological station. It appeared to be near completion, and while it wasn't Quinn's forte, it was at least a step in the right direction. The weather patterns had been closely monitored by satellites they had placed in orbit. He was looking forward to having another perspective of those systems planet-side to compare and contrast from. Having finished the last of the briefs he'd begun, he moved outside of the so-called 'lab' leaving a pair of biologist to make their recordings on what appeared to be Symbisim feces. He was sure it would be a riveting read when he got a look at the report. Stepping outside, he began to survey the area, seeing some people already getting underway with their assignments. He took a deep breath, just trying to take an informal inventory of his people. He could see Ensign Jaliel a ways away, but no immediate sign of T'Laara. They had all been cautioned about venturing off too far. And while this particular region didn't have all the dangers of LZ-1, Isaiah still issued warnings. There was also Ms. Fox from FNN. She was noticeably absent as well. She had proven to be more than resourceful the last time he had worked with her. He also learned that she didn't take well to over-bearing babysitters, or at least that was how she had perceived her last security escort. Hopefully, she was finding something engaging and not too exciting here on Kerelia. And then, there was Commodore Perry. He seemed rather reserved, opting to allow the so-called experts do their job. In Isaiah's opinion, he was fairly hands-off until the situation called for otherwise. Isaiah began to make his way towards what appeared to be a common area as Chief Ozu, Ms. Mazal and the Sivaoan, Left Ear, had congregated. "Morning all."The Science Chief couldn't help but allow his mind to briefly wonder after Thea. She was off, light years away, trying to chase down pirates... essentially as bait. He had every confidence in her ability as a Starfleet officer and trusted their colleagues to make certain everyone came home safely. He took another sip of his coffee as he casually attempted to see what edible miracle seemed to be in the works.

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - 200ft above Base Camp, LZ-2, Kerelia] She had managed to keep her distance up until this point. She had settled upon being a distant shadow, having heard through the grapevine that Ms. Fox valued her independence and her privacy. Far be it for S'Riia to want to infringe upon that. Still, she had an assignment to do. Though, the call of the view had been rather overbearing. It brought S'Riia back to her childhood, and how her would take her on weekend excursions into the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. Hiking through those forests, even climbing a few of those cliffs... she'd never felt more alive or happy than on those father-daughter trips. And there had been something so familiar about it all as she followed Charlie up (at a healthy distance.) Besides, S'Riia was a bit grateful to head away from the camp. It was among the first time she had been assigned to a mission with the Sivaoans. There were some people that were willing to lump the Sivaoans and Caitians all in the same boat. And let's not even get started on the Kzinti. Still, S'Riia was only half-Caitian, and it was a fact that was swiftly swept under the rug by rather obvious appearance. It just seemed like a nice break to put just a little difference between them and herself, if only for a little while. Personally, she had never set foot on Cait. Earth had always been home. "I apologize, Ms. Fox," S'Riia said announcing herself, though she suspected the reporter had already known. "I just... wanted a peek. I promise not to be long." She had every intention of giving the woman her space one more. Yet, gazing out at the view, the crisp, fresh air blanketing them all. It was just enough to curb any hint of homesickness... and perhaps embed a reminder to give her parents a call once back aboard the station.

[ Leanna - Camp, Kerelia LZ2] Leanna smiled as Left Ear spoke to her and commented about their surroundings before helping herself to one of the freshly cooked flat breads. " It sure is" she replied with an equal amount of cheer as she watched the Sivaoan stretch. The Sivaoans were definitely fascinating and Lea was enjoying getting to know more about their customs and way of living. That and being here in what could only be described as paradise with an almost back to basics approach to meals etc, had definitely been a positive and much needed change for the Bar Owner. A final stir and Lea looked up once more as Saya wished her and Left Ear a good morning and complimented her on the food that she had produced for the camp so far. " Morning Saya and thank you, although I can't take all of the credit, the addition of Tail Kinkers and what we've found here, have definitely added something".The Betazoid then finished what she was doing, wiped her hands on the cloth beside the pot and prepared to check on the next batch of coffee as SilverTail joined them and engaged with Saya after helping himself to stew. Lea greeted him with a smile, before Isaiah joined them not long after. " Morning Isaiah, if you're hungry we have stew, fresh flatbreads and an assortment of fresh fruit and I'm about to check on the next batch of coffee".

She had climbed a rather large tree on the edge of the camp to get a good vantage point to survey the area and see if there was anything of note. Fortunately there seemed to be very little activity, most of the wildlife were probably to afraid come near them after they set up camp. She raised her gaze back up to the rising star and smiled lightly, before tuning and looking back down the slope they had climbed previously. The view stretched out for miles, the shadows and lights dancing across the landscape and was only enhanced by the waving trees in the winds. [ Ens. Ari Kiax - Camp - LZ-2, Kerelia] Things had turned out quite well after all. Ari had been worried he wouldn’t be able to take part in the scientific excursion to the planet, his proper return date hadn’t been for another few days, but thanks to Dr. Baker he’d managed to get cleared for active service a little earlier than expected. Ari being a scientist himself was convinced this was the perfect way to return to service, an interesting assignment instead of something boring on the station, however there was the slightly relevant point that he was an Astrophysicist and Mathematician, not a botanist or geologist. Still he was more than capable of helping with sample collection if necessary. However he planned to do more than just a little help, he had studied a fair few geophysics classes at the Academy and was hoping to do a survey of the mountain passes. Kneeling in his tent he went through his gear to make sure he had everything; his tricorder, datapad, a mobile gravimeter and any other tools he needed to start an Isostatic gravity map of the mountainous region. As he strapped on his belt, holding his phaser, he felt something on the other side of the belt jab him in the side. Glancing down he saw the d'k tahg sheathed there. That had been D’yer’s influence, he hadn’t even noticed that he’d packed the thing until he reached the planet surface. Despite the memories of those long hours training Ari had some rather major doubts that he would be able to use the weapon in any real close range combat but at least it might be useful as a tool. Plus he knew if he left it behind he’d feel D’yer’s anxiety of not having a bladed weapon present on an away mission. He also had a few standard survival pieces of equipment just in case, he doubted he’d need them but Ebin’s paranoia was already present and being prepared for the worst was just about the only way to suppress those worries. Exiting the tent with his backpack he blinked slightly at the morning sun, he’d been up a few hours early for a bit of cardio to wake himself up, but he’d swiftly returned to his tent to get the day’s gear ready. Putting the heavy pack to one side he approached the gathered others, noticing a woman he’d seen at Delerium and nearby was a woman he knew only from personnel files, the Head of Engineering Chief Ozu as well as some others. Perhaps more significantly considering his own position he saw Lieutenant Quinn with them, the Chief Science Officer. With the sheer amount of people milling around the camp seemed very busy. Ari couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps being stuck on a station made the appeal of visiting the planet all the greater. Approaching the common ground he smiled, a little timidly, and nodded. “Good Morning.” he said to the group before nodding to Isaiah. “Sir.” It was likely unnecessary but he didn’t know the Human and wasn’t about to piss off the man who would likely be signing off on any choice for future scientific assignments. Ari opened a small flask, the larger one was in his backpack, and poured himself a cup of raktajino and sipped with a smile. These days it wasn’t a proper start until he’d had his cup. [Charlie Fox - "Charlie's View", Mountains near LZ-2, 200 feet above Camp]Charlie had actually closed her eyes, her face turned upward toward the heat from the morning sun. The sensation of real light heating her skin was one she had no idea she'd even miss; it seemed so fundamental, intrinsic. She heard S'Riia's approach but she found herself without the energy or drive to react as she normally might. Requiring an escort every time she accompanied the Fleeters on any outing was a necessary evil, she knew, but that didn't mean she had to be delighted about the permanent shadow. She'd thought that with her clever early rising and quiet sneaking about earlier that she might have successfully given the petty officer the slip this time. Alas, wishful thinking. "It's okay, S'Riia," Charlie said, tone even. She reached out and patted the ground beside her. "Come take a proper look, it's definitely worth the hike." At least this one seemed to understand her desire for autonomy. She hadn't asked her on a date, either, or expressed interest in her underwear. Small mercies. She was happy to enjoy the stunning sight before them in companionable silence, though when the other sometime Security shadow's voice broke through her borrowed commbadge, she grinned. =/\= "Ms Fox, I think I've found you a great image oppotunity up here. As long as you don't mind heights that is." =/\= =/\= "I'm willing to risk it, Ensign. Be right over." =/\= She turned to S'Riia then, her grin turned rueful. "I guess it's time to head back." She had a suspicion that her companion had refrained from reminding her of their schedule so as not to push, and Charlie found herself appreciating the gesture. She pulled a small PADD from her pocket and with a few taps, summoned the holorecorder back to them before moving away from her new favourite spot and back toward the trail. "Olsen caught sight of something in the water earlier, took off like a bat out of hell," she began conversationally as she shoved the handheld back into her pocket. "Dying to see what it was."
