Physical Description
Name: Kaya Som
Species: Trill
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Height: 160cm
Weight: 79kg
Face Claim: Original artwork
* Awarded most likely to run amok by her peers as part of the Frontier 1st anniversary events. *
Physical Description:
Kaya Som is a short and stocky Trill with a light brown complexion, dark brown chin-length hair, and dark brown eyes. Her Trill spots are larger scale and darker, characteristic of her ethnicity. She has a round face with strong features - she smiles widely and laughs loudly and her expressive eyebrows show a skeptical forthwrightness. Her voice is low and raspy - a capable alto.
She's very comfortable in her skin and has an active way of moving, making herself comfortable in chairs and a little fidgety in meetings. She does nothing to quiet herself physically.
Off-duty, she dresses causualy in Trill fashion. A bit edgy, a bit rock-and-roll.
Personality Description:
For Kaya, life is about exploration and making as many connections as possible. She finds the galaxy to be rich in diversity and adventure. There's nothing she enjoys more than being around a table with new people arguing about music, ranting about politics, and gushing about the latest tech coming out of Starfleet's research and development.
Without a symbiot, being of the younger generation, and living off-world, Kaya isn't as affected by the general Trill culture of romantic detachment. She's quite free with herself. She prefers the company of women and women-like genders but it's not a rule. Her only rule (which she's broken) is no Terrans - she finds them a bit wishy-washy.
Kaya did have some idea about what she was getting into joining Starfleet. Although she's irritated by the majority-human institution and rankles at times to their somewhat paternalistic attitude (super Vulcan, am I right?), she believes in the general mission and loves working on the ships. She's not particularly ambitions, quite happy to be a nobody working with advanced systems, learning loads, and seeing the galaxy.
When it comes to authority, Kaya's not always the most compliant subordinate. She's uncomfortable or awkwardly brusk around command, and doesn't always take well to criticism of her work. She's not always a considerate friend and can be pushy.
Hobbies: Kaya is a connoisseur of music and cinema from across the galaxy, sampling heavily from as much as she can get a hold of. The rarer, the better. Or, lacking that, loud. (Her fluency in Bajoran is entirely due to her interest in Bajoran freedom anthems.) She likes food, cinema, fashion, sport - anything sensory that provides another lens to interpret existence.
Short-term Goals: Enjoy life, see the galaxy, get settled with new friends on a new ship.
Long-term Goals: Kaya doesn’t know if she’ll stay in Starfleet forever. What she wants from her job is more control in what she does and more trust in fiddling with the ship.
Phobias or Fears: Getting sucked out of an airlock. She’s always nervous in cargo bays or shuttles.
Favorite Things: Betazoid punk, Klingon Folk, spicy food, late nights, cinema from other cultures, shore leave
Least Favorite Things: Getting bossed, mornings
Bad Habits or Vices: Staying up too late, probably too eager to try new recreational substances
Strengths: Fluency with starship systems, improvising, teaching
Weaknesses: Lacks ambition, bit sassy at criticism of her work
Prejudices: She’s a bit done with humans. They’re everywhere and Starfleet’s very centered on them culturally.
Early Life:
Birthdate: 2354, Earth date 15 Apr
Birthplace: Tellanastre, Bil Province, Trill
Parents': Juna Som (Trill security corps), Aso Tellex (public health) - both live on Trill
Other Important Relationships: Uncle Tell Taryl (joined) - Aso's brother; Avi Moz, romantic
Kaya grew up in a provincial city capitol Tellanastre on Trill; one of her mothers is an officer in the security corps and her other mother is a public health specialist. As a kid, Kaya quickly became fluent in all manner of computer systems as part of her thirst for finding all the best new music and cinema from across the quadrant. She may or may not have gotten into a spot of trouble here or there for hacking in where she wasn’t allowed, but her family and teachers deftly kept her energies on the straight and narrow, funneling her into public works projects and hands-on apprenticeships across the homeworld. When she was fourteen, she had the opportunity to attend a youth computing academy on Bajor where her musical eyes were truly opened and she got a taste for their hot sauce.
Like many Trill, Kaya applied to be considered as a symbiont initiate in her early twenties, but her application was declined after an unsatisfactory psychological evaluation. She was gutted. The Commission cited a, 'lack an inner presence,' and that 'a union with a symbiont could never be balanced.' Furthermore it was decided that she had an excessive predilection to romantic attachments.
Starfleet Training:
Kaya redirected her interests towards Starfleet where adventure was the promise. She applied to Starfleet Academy, but was turned down twice - tanked the astrophysics and biology sections both times. She would have tried a third time, but a Joined mentor suggested she enlist - there was no shame in that and Kaya would get to do what she wanted to do - get hands in the systems of starships and travel the galaxy.
So, Kaya attended the Starfleet Technical Services Academy specializing in starship computer systems. One of her Engineering instructors was Judith Eastman.
Department Preference: Engineering

2381.07.02 - (26) USS Mac, Senior Chief Petty Officer; Chief of Engineering
Personnel File:
Her training academy marks were quite good, no problems there.
Additional items on her personnel file include a spotty disciplinary record of minor infractions starting in 2379 and going into 2380, and that she requested her transfer off the Centaur after less than a year. Her record since starting on the Mac is very clean with good reports and a promotion three months in.
2380.03.20, her record indicates she gave testimony in Ensign Nirak's court martial. Nirak being her supervising officer aboard the Centaur.
2381.01: Documentation of the Serenity settlement incident, where she was one of several captured by a hostile party. Her mandatory med check will have come back clean and she'd have been assigned counseling and granted extra leave. Shortly after that, she'll have been reported missing from duty.

Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
On her first assignment aboard the Centaur, Kaya felt obligated to report misconduct of a superior officer. It didn’t go well and she ended up requesting a transfer. She still wonders if she did the right thing. Recently she had some closure in that Ensign Nirak's misconduct caught up with him and her testimony was requested for his court martial
Your character's best or favorite experience
Her internship on Bajor before she joined Starfleet. It was the first time she’d left Trill and finally got to experience first hand one of the cultures she’d been eating up from afar. She made friends, had wild nights, and her whole view of things was opened.
Your character's most crucial experience
Kaya had to pick herself up after failing her applications to be Joined and to Starfleet. Her view of herself as a young person who exceled was disrupted and she had to find a new way to find value in what she’s doing and that life isn't all about your job.
Who is your character's role model and why?
Part of Kaya’s lack of ambition is not having a role model, at least not a professional one. As clear-headed and dedicated as she seems, she’s got no charted course. That said, she admires her parents, her uncle, and has had many positive older influences.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
Do you have previous experience with a role-play forum? I’ve been doing forum roleplay in various fandoms for about twenty years. I have tried Star Trek simming before, but I prefer a forum format.
What brought you to the Frontier? I found you on RPGD and it seemed like the right style for me.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us? This is a character i've played before. I tend to like to pepper in extra Trill culture where canon has gaps. I don't get too crazy.

“Kaya.”
Kaya was hunched over a com typing rapidly. The screen was cleared of the pleasant geometric user interface; instead it was black screen of tiny lines of code. Someone had come up behind her. She didn’t look up.
“Mmhmm,” she said raising a finger.
"Kaya.”
“One minute.” In her mind’s eye, the Trill could see the system laid out like a web. She held all her previous approaches in her head, and all the next steps after. If she took her mind from them for a second, they’d collapse into a pile and she’d have to start all over again.
“Petty Officer Kaya!”
Kaya made a face and turned slowly in her chair to see her supervisor looking rather put out.
“Panels are frozen in Sick Bay.” He made a slightly sarcastic gesture, a sweeping wave of his hand towards the general direction of the door. “Please?”
“Aye aye, but -”
“They’re in the middle of a surgical procedure.”
“Yes, but this is for …” she started.
All it took then to get Kaya out of the chair was a long-suffering glare. Her feet began to obey orders, but her fingers lingered on the panel, securing her progress before finally hopping to.
Kaya had made her way to Sick Bay at a trot, fixing her hair which had come loose from its ties. When she entered, she saw medical personnel huddled around a patient in a bed, dressed in sterile gear.
“Which one?” she asked, and three of them pointed gloved hands towards a nearby station.
“It’s been locking up all morning. Ran the diagnostics but report log came back clean,” said a nurse as they came over to explain.
Kaya tapped the black screen to try and get it to wake up. When it wouldn’t, she started asking some questions. What were they doing when it locked up, had they tried the same thing at other stations, which diagnostics had they run.
Nothing helpful, unfortunately. Sick Bay was, understandably, preoccupied with other things such as a full blood replacement after plasma sepsis. Kaya opened a little hatch on the underside of the station and hooked in, forcing the station to jump to life and show her some logs. It took a full hour to track down the problem.
“Looks like someone tried to access the program from a panel without permissions. Got locked out, stored the error and then kept mistaking access from this panel as unauthorized blah blah blah.”
Blank stare.
“It’s fixed. Go nuts.”
And so on went Kaya’s shift. Bug fixes, access issues, lock-outs, and malfunctioning com badges. It wasn’t until she was back in her quarters that she could crank up some new music coming out of Bajor and get back to the morning’s problem.
After a few more hours, she hit the key to run the code and stood back. Through her quarters’ com she heard in the ships’ serene voice singing in clear Klingon accompanied with thundering drums.
<< Kaya of Trill, destroyer of worlds, unjoined of ages, even sweet death will not defeat you. Break bones and disembowel in honor of Kaya of Trill! >>
She slowly lifted two triumphant fists in the air.
“Alright, computer. Now patch it to Lieutenant Desai...”
